You\u2019ve got your prototype and you\u2019re about to set up your crowdfunding campaign page. But have you taken time to build your email list? Whether you&#8217;re launching on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backerkit.com\/?utm_source=backerkit_wordpress&amp;utm_medium=backerkit_blog&amp;utm_campaign=backerkit_blog_0823\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BackerKit<\/a> , Indiegogo, or Kickstarter, an email list isn\u2019t just something that\u2019s \u201cnice to have\u201d \u2014 it\u2019s the foundation of your campaign. If you don\u2019t have a strong email list, you\u2019re going to have a hard time reaching your goal. To give your project the best chance of success, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backerkit.com\/blog\/build-email-list?utm_source=Marketing&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=kickstarter_email_080620\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">building an email list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people who have shown interest in your project or projects like yours is essential. Here\u2019s why:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>1. Email list size can be an indicator of crowdfunding success<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Email conversion rates \u2014 that is, the number of people on an email list who end up pledging to a campaign \u2014 vary. However, in most cases only a small percentage \u2014 generally, we find around 1%to 5% \u2014 of the people on a high-quality email list will end up backing your project.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0A high-quality list is one in which subscribers knew what they were signing up for when they submitted their addresses and where addresses were collected through legitimate means. Legitimate list-building tactics include collecting email addresses through in-person events, online forum communities, and social media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you plan for your campaign knowing that a relatively low percentage of people on a legitimate email list will convert, you can get a good estimate of a couple of things:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What would be a reasonable funding goal for your project<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many email contacts you should be shooting for\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What the average price of your rewards should be<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>A note on email conversion rates<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re eyeing a $10,000 funding goal, and you have an average pledge of $100, you\u2019ll need to get 100 backers to hit that goal. With a 5% conversion rate, you should have at least 2,000 people on your email list. So what if you were getting ready to launch, and you didn\u2019t have that many people on your list? Does that mean you\u2019re going to fail?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, not necessarily. First of all, it\u2019s important to note that the number of people on your list is just one of the factors that contribute to your campaign\u2019s success. Campaigns fail and succeed for a number of reasons, including not clearly communicating what the product is, not properly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backerkit.com\/blog\/guides\/the-practical-guide-to-planning-a-crowdfunding-campaign\/how-to-set-reward-tiers\/?utm_source=Marketing&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=kickstarter_email_080620\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">structuring reward tiers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and not effectively marketing the campaign once it\u2019s live.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Additionally, there are some cases where a smaller list may suffice. For instance, you may have a personal list of people who have pre-committed to backing or that you know are invested in the success of the project.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That 1% to 5% conversion rate isn&#8217;t prescriptive, but it is something to keep in mind. Taking it into account can help you focus your list-building activities and put you in a more comfortable position on launch day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, when you collect a specific number of email addresses that lines up with your funding goal, it puts you on the right track. So if you don\u2019t have the list that you need, it would probably be best to postpone your campaign until you do.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Adjusting your funding goal<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The creators of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/953449460\/shapes-cable-holder\/description\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shapes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 a metal cable holder that keeps your workspace organized \u2014 first launched their project in 2016. They set a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/953449460\/shapes-metal-cable-holder-elegant-desk-accessories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$3,000 funding goal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Interestingly, their new campaign actually ended up surpassing their goal, raising more than $5,000.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Shapes, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/igrasilstudio\/war-of-ashird-a-strategic-turn-based-jrpg\/description\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">War of Ashird<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an RPG video game, had struggled when they initially launched the project. But if you\u2019re already in the middle of your campaign, and realize that you don\u2019t have the support that you need to get funded this time around, there\u2019s no shame in relaunching. Look at it as an opportunity to build a stronger community. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>2. You can\u2019t count on people discovering your project organically<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One misconception that a lot of first-time creators have is that they can just launch a project and potential backers will magically land on their campaign page. In the days leading up to launch day, you should be sending emails to your subscribers to get them excited about your project and ready to pledge right away. You should also make sure to explain how crowdfunding works for those members of your audience who\u2019ve never pledged before. Alternatively, if people like the idea, and are excited about it, they\u2019ll be happy to sign up for your email list. In this way, you can gauge interest in your project and start validating your idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, email sign-ups aren\u2019t the only indicator of whether or not you have an idea worth pursuing. You should also be researching what competitors are doing, if any similar ideas already exist, and your target audience\u2019s needs. Send out surveys or updates on how the development process is going, and find out what your audience thinks.
