When she started sharing photos on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dispeldice?lang=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the designer, handcrafted dice she\u2019d created, people wanted to buy them. Wang felt that producing her dice on a larger scale would be a great way to contribute to a community that has meant so much to her. To do this, she turned to crowdfunding, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/dispeldice\/dispel-dice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launching her first Kickstarter campaign in 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gorgeous, multicolored, sharp-edge dice were bound to attract a large audience. But Wang never thought the Dispel Dice Kickstarter campaign would be as successful as it was. She set a $20,000 funding goal. By the end of the campaign, she\u2019d raised more than $2 million. Raising 100 times your original goal is impressive for any creator, but it\u2019s especially remarkable for a first-timer. Although Dispel Dice\u2019s performance was unexpected, Wang wisely set up the infrastructure to handle this type of success. She worked with friends, mentors, and BackerKit to get prepared.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Pre-launch considerations<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like many first-time creators, Wang was nervous going into her campaign. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cI was constantly thinking \u2018What if no one buys my dice? What am I going to do?\u2019 I\u2019m using all of my money to get here. So it was very frightening,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen I think back to that time, I was basically a nervous wreck every day leading up to the campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Wang\u2019s friends, several of whom were experienced crowdfunding creators, told her that she\u2019d actually need to prepare for the project to do a lot better than she hoped it would. Obviously, they believed in her and her work, but Wang\u2019s friends were also speaking to a larger crowdfunding truth. Pre-launch preparations should not only pave the way for you to hit your funding goal, but also make it possible for you to manage a campaign that exceeds your expectations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What would she do if she had thousands or tens of thousands of backers? How would she handle fulfillment? Would she have the bandwidth or expertise to manage all of that backer data? Despite her nerves, Wang was mulling over these types of questions as she developed her campaign plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Anticipating fulfillment and shipping challenges<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with guidance from experienced creators, Wang knew that there would be things that she\u2019d only have insight into once she started her campaign. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMy background isn\u2019t in operations or logistics or shipping or fulfillment, and so I really didn\u2019t know what I was going to need,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I didn\u2019t know what some of the problems were going to be with Kickstarter\u2019s software or organizing the backer information.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wang was also concerned about how she\u2019d calculate shipping costs. She didn\u2019t want to end up overcharging and also didn\u2019t want to have to foot the bill because of a miscalculation. She wondered how she would calculate sales <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backerkit.com\/blog\/crowdfunding-taxes?utm_source=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.backerkit.com%2Ffeatures%2Fpreorders&amp;utm_medium=dispel_dice_blog_1201020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per state and which states she was going to need to pay sales tax in. She\u2019d known people who had run businesses and faced these issues, and understood that these were areas where a lot of small companies stumble.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other experienced Kickstarter creators suggested that she use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backerkit.com\/for-creators?utm_source=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.backerkit.com%2Ffeatures%2Fpreorders&amp;utm_medium=dispel_dice_blog_1201020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BackerKit <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to tackle these challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI had known someone who had run Kickstarters pretty much every year, multiple times. Who wouldn\u2019t want them?\u201d People were excited about this campaign, even before it launched. At the time, designer DnD dice collections \u2014 particularly the high-quality, luxury dice that Wang was creating \u2014\u00a0were rare. Before launching, Wang and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Dispeldice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dispel Dice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> team worked hard to bring attention to the project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe sent out some sets to people to preview. We sent them out to influencers and friends as well. We had a small sample sale prior to the Kickstarter, so that people could at least see them and hold them,\u201d Wang says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also worked with a few media outlets, including Polygon and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/handmade-gaming-dice-kickstarter-raises-1-5-million-in-1839695649\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kotaku<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to get coverage on the project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their outreach efforts in combination with the quality of the dice were two major factors contributing to the project\u2019s performance. By the end of the 32-day campaign, Wang and her team had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/goldiechan\/2019\/11\/25\/when-shiny-handmade-dice-tell-a-brilliant-2-million-dollar-story\/?sh=f2a7c23398fc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raised $2,392,156<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the support of 20,135 backers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Keeping 20K backers happy<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wang wanted to provide her backers with the best experience possible. They were all so excited about the project, and disappointing them by flubbing fulfillment would be unimaginable to her. That being said, 20,135 backers is an overwhelming amount of people to contend with. With that data, they can create targeted email marketing messages to encourage that segment of the list to pledge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dispel Dice team used Launch to let their community know how much time was left for them to pledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 2px 2px 2px 2px; color: #555555; background-color: ##ffffff; border: #ffd508 2px solid;\"><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-19606\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backerkit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/dispel-dice-launch-1024x888.png\" alt=\"backerkit launch email\" width=\"495\" height=\"458\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the $2,392,156 Dispel Dice raised, $51,128 can be attributed to Launch and the emails sent in the campaign\u2019s final hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Entering the homestretch<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wang and the Dispel Dice team are currently focused on fulfillment. Because of the scale of the project, there will be two different shipping waves \u2014 one in 2020 and one in 2021. BackerKit is making this process easier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBeing able to send out a lock down address form, so that we can say \u2018don\u2019t fiddle with this\u2019 to a specific segment of our backers was incredibly helpful,\u201d she says. \u201cBecause we have the 2020 and the 2021 waves, we didn\u2019t want to ask people in the 2021 wave to lock down their addresses until we were ready to send out their orders.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The success of the campaign has allowed Wang to start building out her team.
