There are different forms and stages of playtesting that you\u2019ll be working your way through. These will likely be people you\u2019ve connected with through board game or tabletop meetups, playtesting events, or conventions. During this phase, you\u2019ll be guiding players through the game. If something isn\u2019t working, you\u2019ll be there to clear up any confusion or make a change on the fly to keep the game moving. You\u2019ll simply be presenting your game to your playtesters with the rulebook and letting them figure everything out. Your job here is to observe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The feedback you get during your blind playtests will help improve your rulebook. Currently, with social distancing guidelines in place, it\u2019s not possible to approach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamecrafter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this phase<\/a> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">board game design<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a traditional way. However, even in normal circumstances, if you live in a rural area or you\u2019re not able to travel to events, digital playtesting is an option.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the moment, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tabletopia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tabletopia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tabletopsimulator.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tabletop Simulator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the popular choices. To use them, you\u2019ll have to create a digital version of your game, which you\u2019ll be able to customize on the platform. Don\u2019t worry \u2014 both platforms have how-to guides to help you out. (Here\u2019s a guide from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.tabletopia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tabletopia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and here\u2019s one from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kb.tabletopsimulator.com\/getting-started\/video-tutorials\/#tools-menu-part-b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tabletop Simulator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the benefits of going this route are that you can quickly make changes to your game and won\u2019t have to spend money on printing or shipping a prototype. But of course, playtesters won\u2019t be able to experience any of the tactile elements of your game (if that\u2019s important to you) and they may have to pay to use the platform. All of this being said, right now, it\u2019s a great alternative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 20px 20px 20px 20px; color: #555555; background-color: ##ffffff; border: #ffd508 4px solid;\"><b>Quick tip: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can find people to play your game by joining playtesting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/discord.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discord<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/digitaltabletopplaytests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook groups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, putting out a call on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BoardGameGeek forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, visiting game stores, or volunteering to playtest for other game designers and asking if they\u2019ll reciprocate. Consider <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/protospiel.online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protospiel Online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other virtual playtesting conventions. These are also great places to get general advice about how to design a board game.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to collect feedback<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you design your own <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90451822\/board-game-design-is-thriving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">board game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and immerse yourself in the process, it can be emotionally difficult to share what you\u2019ve been working on with other people. What if they don\u2019t like the game? What if they find some major flaw that will require you to totally rework everything? These thoughts are scary, but you shouldn\u2019t be immobilized by them. Go into the playtests with confidence. Set the stage for everyone, letting them know how long the game should take to play and if they\u2019ll be playing the full game or testing a specific aspect of it. From there, you just need to be a sponge \u2014 observing, listening, and taking notes. You may get frustrated at some points. It may be hard to hear some of the criticism, but everything you learn is going to improve your game in some way, and that has to be at the forefront of your mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Asking the right questions on your playtest feedback form<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your game should be fun and entertaining. However, simply asking people if they enjoyed playing, isn\u2019t incredibly useful information. You can\u2019t refine any elements of the board game design or generate new ideas with a comment like \u201cthe game wasn\u2019t fun.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/blogs\/WesleyRockholz\/20140418\/215819\/10_Insightful_Playtest_Questions.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have to go deeper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What wasn\u2019t fun about it? Was something hard to understand? Was there an element that took you out of the game?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should be taking notes throughout the playtest, jotting down any verbal responses, but the best way to collect specific feedback is by providing your playtesters with a playtest feedback form.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are just a few questions that you might include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What did you like most about the game?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What didn\u2019t you like about this game?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What was the most enjoyable moment of the game?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What was the most frustrating moment of the game?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you enjoy the game\u2019s theme? Why or why not?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Were there any rules that were confusing?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Was the overall game duration too short, too long, or just right?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your playtest feedback form is short and concise \u2014 you don\u2019t want to overwhelm anyone. Only ask 3-5 questions and keep your questions consistent across playtest sessions to help identify patterns. While you may need practice, try not to ask questions that prompt or encourage your desired answer. Playtesters may turn into backers and even provide reviews for your campaign page.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Improving your design: Incorporating what you&#8217;re learned from your playtest feedback form<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So you\u2019re looking at stacks of feedback forms and notes you\u2019ve taken, and thinking, \u201chow am I going to incorporate all of this into my game?\u201d Well, the good news is that you don\u2019t have to incorporate everything. No, this wasn\u2019t all a huge waste of time, it\u2019s just that all of the feedback isn\u2019t going to be applicable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to know your audience. When you\u2019re looking at the comments, consider whether or not they\u2019re coming from people who would actually buy your game. That context is important.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If someone who doesn\u2019t fit your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.backerkit.com\/blog\/kickstarter-backers\/?utm_source=marketing&amp;utm_medium=playtesting_blog_032521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ideal backer profile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says they didn\u2019t enjoy your game, you don\u2019t necessarily have to rework elements of the board game design to please them. Instead, you should be looking for patterns in feedback. Is there something in your rulebook that consistently confuses people? If so, that\u2019s something worth investigating further.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Finishing your board game: When to stop tweaking your design<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve only playtested your game a couple of times, keep going. There\u2019s no specific number you\u2019ll need to hit \u2014 some people say run 30 tests, others say 100. Honestly, you could keep on testing and refining forever. However, you should have an almost instinctive feel for when you\u2019re done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is the game regularly running smoothly during your playtests? Are there fewer questions being asked? Are people consistently telling you that they enjoy your game during the blind playtesting stage?
