Using music in your tabletop games shouldn't be so complicated.

Music is one of the most powerful and compelling forces on Earth — and it helps us create an immersive environment that goes far beyond tabletops, maps, and minis. When we use it to add atmosphere and ambiance to our role-playing scenarios, it allows us to embrace a willing suspension of disbelief and puts our brains into the story we’re creating collectively. It helps us believe in the world and feel the emotions of our characters.

But because music is so good at affecting our brains, it’s a double-edged sword that has the power to break your immersive environment just as easily as creating it. And as a Gamemaster, you have enough to manage. Between tools, players, world prep, and story details, the more you have to DO, the more it takes away from the collaborative storytelling of your group. When it came to music in our games, we found ourselves limited to either using existing soundtracks and playlists, or committing to managing layered, expansive soundboards. So, we often avoided using it in our sessions, because if it doesn’t feel just right, it breaks us out of the world we're trying to create.

We built Tabula Vox to provide a simple and effective way to incorporate the power of music into your games. Our roleplaying game sessions are not scripted, so scripted music won't always fit. Vox uses professionally composed dynamic tracks that can shift with your storytelling, enhancing the immersion of your experience.

Edit

Music can become disruptive if not managed properly. Jarring transitions, accidental sound effects, and poor timing can all break your immersive environment and create awkward moments at your table. As a Gamemaster, the last thing you need is another set of inputs to handle. After all the prep you've put into your sessions, juggling between controlling the game flow and managing music can get exhausting and lead to extended pauses, interruptions, and distractions that detract from the overall experience. Instead of enhancing immersion, the mismanagement of music can create a disjointed atmosphere.

When your party stumbles into an evil wraith's bloody summoning ritual but the jaunty tavern music is still playing, we have two choices: "Hang on, let me change the music", or "Hey Wraith, have a pint with us!"

While music has the power to evoke emotions and create atmosphere, it can also inadvertently confuse and unsettle players. The human brain is wired to associate certain emotions and meanings with specific musical cues. When these cues conflict with the unfolding story or the actions of the characters, it can lead to subconscious confusion, unease, and ultimately disrupt your collaborative storytelling.

Why use real-time generated soundtracks in live, unscripted events?

  • Immersion: Real-time soundtracks can create a more immersive experience by providing music that perfectly matches the mood and tone of the event. Whether it’s a suspenseful moment in a TTRPG session or a hilarious scene in an improv comedy show, the music will enhance the emotions and draw the audience deeper into the event.

  • Flexibility: With real-time generated soundtracks, event organizers have the flexibility to adapt the music to the changing dynamics of the event. The music can seamlessly adjust to the pace, intensity, and emotions of the moment, ensuring a smooth and cohesive experience for both the performers and the audience.

  • Enhanced Emotional Impact: Our dynamic tracks have the power to evoke specific emotions in real-time. Whether it’s excitement, fear, or joy, the music can amplify the emotional impact of the event, making it a truly unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

Using Vox is as simple as selecting the Theme, setting the Mood, and hitting Play! Vox will continue to mix and layer the professionally composed tracks until you’re ready for a change.

THEMES AND MOODS
Vox music is created as sets of dynamic tracks that make up a Theme. Themes have a general vibe and ambience, so you can set the base music to fit your location or genre. Each Theme includes a set of Moods, so you can shift the mood of the music as your party adventures. It's that simple!

PROFESSIONALLY COMPOSED
Vox Themes are composed by music professionals, specifically for use in Vox. The composers create dynamic tracks with a set of moods that Vox mixes and layers in real-time, so your music runs continuously without sound fatigue — even when you change the mood.

SYNCED ONLINE STREAMING
Players can use a link to listen from anywhere on any device, making Vox the perfect music tool for online or hybrid games. No downloads, installs, "Let's all hit Play at the same time," or "Is this playing through my mic?". Our technology ensures that all players are perfectly synced, so the Gamemaster can be assured that all listeners are hearing the same thing, at the same time. No timing hiccups, overlapping, jarring transitions, or lag — we promise!

VOX HANDLES THE TECHNICAL AND MUSICAL ASPECTS
Vox tracks use varied loops and seamless transitions, so the music isn't just a set of repeating songs — it's dynamically weaving the music and motifs together for constant variety. We handle the technical aspects so you don't have to worry about:
  • Time signature/Meter/Tempo
  • Timbre/Tone/Color
  • Tails/Resonance/Transitions/Entrances
  • Keys/Key signatures/Dissonance
  • Awkward Intensity and Effect shifts

We've already been testing the Alpha version of Vox, and the response has been huge! With the automatic nature of Vox, our testers have found that not only is Vox easy to use during game sessions, but also makes great background music for working, study, and just hanging out (one tester has confessed to using Vox while folding laundry!) With proof of concept established, the goal of our funding campaign will be to pay our composers for more music.

Our music

The music available in Tabula Vox is artfully composed by music professionals to a specific set of standards. The composers create dynamic tracks with a set of moods that Vox mixes and layers in real-time, so your music runs continuously without sound fatigue. Vox composers are real, squishy humans - we like robots, but we're not using AI to generate our sound.
