The 22nd Lord & Die | Help me decide the 22nd die!

Hello everyone!

Before I go too far with the 22nd Lord and all that, let's take a look at one of the final Lords coming in from czarfunkle!

There are just a few Lords you haven't seen-- The Alleyman, The Showman, and.... They Who Hunger.

They Who Hunger preside over the Longings Die, and they know longing intimately. Desire for touch, to be seen, for change, for movement, for anything out of reach. When you wish to know what is missing, what people desire in a reading, you include their die. And when their card comes up? Someone is starved-- but for what? That is the key question, isn't it?

I pushed czarfunkle to the edge with all the hands, but so it goes! I love hands in art, and artists hate to illustrate so many hands!

The 22nd Lord & Die

So now, what I'm here to ask! Over this week we've seen money come in on the project, but about 2/3rds of backers on here have done their surveys and about 1/3rd of those people included extra add-ons. Considering this in total with how much we have to go in order to hit $300,000, I think we're likely to get about 260,000 before it peters out and we end at most. That's not going to be our 300,000, huh?

But that's okay! I'm including the 22nd die anyways, and we're picking some of the key parts of it together right here, right now.

The 22nd die is the Chaos Die.

In the comments below, I'd like to see your suggestions for two elements of the die! Then I will read these tonight and tomorrow, and on Saturday I will post a poll (or two polls if I can?) for us to vote to the final answers!

Question 1: Who is the Lord of the Chaos Die?
I've had people suggest the darned Happy Squirrel, and I think it could be fun to have a wild chaotic entity made up of parts of various things, or some eldritch horror. But I'm open to anyone's thoughts on who should be the lord of Chaos! In your answers, please feel free to name them with a title (like the other Lords-- instead of Loki for example, The Trickster would work), and explain who they are/how they look! I will take an assortment of these answers from you all to the poll Saturday.

Question 2: What are the die faces of the Chaos Die?
The Fate die of the original set is what I'm thinking about. With faces that make you remove the nearest die, and consider the implications of it missing-- faces that make you re-roll some dice-- faces that make you move the nearest die to the core of the reading-- etc. All in all, it makes changes to the reading, moves dice, and changes meanings. I'd consider a die face that makes you consider the nearest die in its opposite meaning-- or maybe if it's in the core it does that to everything! So many chaotic options. I'd love to see all your ideas. In your answers, I am looking for any number (1-infinity) of die face options. On Saturday, I will do a Google Form poll with the top 15 or so options, so that you can pick multiple when you vote in the end!

Thanks all!

Q1: The Maelstrom.

Ratatosk, the Norse Squirrel of Mischief :) It covers Trickster, the Happy Squirrel, etc. :D

Question 2: The eight-pointed star springs to mind as the most obvious symbol for chaos (be careful - apparently Dugin is using a modified version of it with the NW SW SE NE arms being longer than the others for his Russian Empire controlling Europe idea) (Delta p)(Delta q) ~ h [(Delta) should be a triangle - it's the original way Heisenberg published the Uncertainty Principle)] ψ = Σnanψn - If I understand it correctly, this is the equation describing wave function collapse that results from measurement. Until that measurement occurs, multiple options are possible due to the superposition principle.

I think a good concept for the 22nd lord would be an empty throne. Sort of a lordless die.

This is my personal favourite. If the other Lords represent their own type of order, Chaos would be an unmanned throne.

I like this idea too.

Iay well be one of the few who is against the idea of the Squirrel. I'd love The Trickster in many.of their forms: Coyote, Raven, mysterious person, etc, perhaps as a sort of grouping given the number of trickster types out there in the world? Just....something beyond "lol Squirrel" please.

I'm . . . really not a fan of the squirrel idea for this particular thing either.

The Trickster is logical for a Chaos die, as are Squirrels. Off the top of my head, I can think of three squirrel characters from various angles of pop culture that are associated with a fair bit of chaos: Foamy, Slappy, and of course, our dear friend Happy. And the squirrel from Emperor's New Groove may itself be less chaotic, but it's from a suitable setting. Of course, as far as I'm concerned, they're all variations on Ratatosk, from Norse lore, stirring the shit just because he *can*. (Whereas Loki serves rather more of a purpose.) The Trickster is nice and archetypal, but Ratatosk and the other Squirrels are arguably more... The Troll (in the Internet sense). What does that look like? Hmm. Several squirrels in a trench coat, looking quite varied in style and color.

Snert, I didn't notice I could edit my name. This is Ember, from the server ;)

Foamy is a beloved throwback in these parts. Squirrelly wrath forever.

Yes, I love that idea: Several squirrels in a trench coat, looking quite varied in style and color!

I have loved the happy squirrel as the chaos die ever since I heard it! In my opinion this would be the perfect addition! I also love all the chaos & entropy flavor being thrown about in the other comments. I don't pretend to have creative ideas for the dice faces though . . . but from what I've experienced of your past works and the ideas I have read here, I am fairly certain we are in very good hands. Thank you!

I also love the idea of just a goose with a knife as well. Untitled goose game was such a good encapsulation of being a chaotic menace. But other references like that would be fun to see worked into the design

I think that the Lord of Chaos should be Dr. Ian Malcolm. 😃 I'm not sure about the faces; I was thinking in terms of things that cause chaos (tornadoes, that one relative everyone seems to have, T- Rexes, etc.). I am intrigued with your suggestion that the die would cause chaos itself...

I mean, there's order in entropy - life finds a way, right?

I must admit I would love the Happy Squirrel! 😂 But a “Child of the Cosmos” die with a freaky combo of beings could be interesting too! As for being based on the Fate die, I’d like to see a move away from what Seven said made it gimmicky, and to offer a real shift in perspective for the querent. Here are some face ideas: Community - The closest die or area of the mat the chaos die lands on is a call for ways you can look to support others. Inspired by the community fund. Dumpster fire - The closest die or area of the mat the chaos die lands on is going to be an absolute clusterfuck. Destroy it, avoid it, anything. Many eyes - look at the reading in a new way. Bring in cards, bibliomancy, a pendulum, or phone a friend to ask what they think Duality - flip a coin. Yes the reading stays the same. No you must reroll the whole reading, or read all the dice with reversals Broken clock - the timing of the nearest die or area on the mat where the chaos die lands on will be distorted somehow. Either it’ll happen when you least expect it, or it will recur until you find a way to break free from it. Abandoned House - I would see this as a thing among reflections type of meaning. The nearest die or area of the mat the Chaos die lands on is now haunted. Someone/something else’s energy is affecting that area of your life, and you need to look within yourself to discover what it is.

I love the Groundhog Day idea. Most things recur until you learn enough to move beyond them.

Alternatively, if the chaos die stays on par with simply manipulating the dice closest to it by adding/ removing/ rotation etc, there are a few ways that could be updated. Some of my favourite cards in the Alleyman’s tarot are: The Joker - The cards around the chaos joker are now affected by this wild card. Easy to see a mechanism like this in play for the dice. Giuseppe - draw three cards that make you happy. Perhaps we could roll 3 new dice or draw three cards from a deck? The Night Owl - draw one to two cards as messages from the night owl. Again could work well for oracle dice or do it with the cards. The Final Card - while this works fantastically in a huge deck like the Alleyman’s, I would worry that if the entire reading was cancelled by one side of the Chaos die it would end up happening way too often. Perhaps remove the die closest?

I’d like a face that make you flip every die exactly over, so that the bottom facing face is actually the face you have to face up to consider
