It leans on the lore of the devilrifts from Nordlond, which are basically rips either between the Nine Realms (some go from Midgard to Muspelheim, explaining why there are so many darn demons tromping around causing trouble without a human creating a conduit through Bad Life Choices) or clear out of Yggdrasil and into the Great Void beyond, from whence Elder Things come.

But that lore is optional, and who doesn't love a massive sinister sort of intelligent crab-beast with armor stronger than a breastplate and claws that can snip a person in half in a few turns?
