"I'll be honest with you; The One Ring is hands down one of my favorite roleplaying games, and it takes pride of place in our list of the best tabletop RPGs because it's so well done. Its mechanics are elegant and easy to learn, yet impactful. The game is also jam-packed with lore, gorgeous artwork that hews close to J.R.R Tolkien's vision for Middle-earth, and an aesthetic which feels as though it's been taken straight from the novels. It truly feels like The Lord of the Rings in a way, so this revamp has me doing a Gollum-style 'my precious' impression right off the bat. If you're a fan of the series, you need to check it out." “Not all his servants and chattels are wraiths! There are orcs and trolls, there are wargs and werewolves; and there have been and still are many Men, warriors and kings, that walk alive under the Sun, and yet are under his sway. And their number is growing daily.” – Gandalf, The Fellowship of the Ring
Dedicated to the servants of the Enemy and all those who oppose the Free Peoples, gathers a host of adversaries drawn from the shadows of the Third Age, from cunning Black Númenórean spies and cruel Haradrim champions to ancient evils out of forgotten ages.
Evil Men, Orcs of many breeds, fell Trolls, and dreadful undead are described in detail, alongside the Nine Ringwraiths and their winged steeds.
Strange beings of the Wild and the dark places of the world also appear, including Ents, Woses, gigantic Oliphaunts, and other creatures encountered only beyond the borders of marked maps.
Rules and guidance allow Loremasters to bring these foes to life at the gaming table, with updated characteristics and mechanics for their Fell Abilities.
A chapter devoted to the Evils of the Ancient World explores dreadful creatures such as Balrogs, Dragons, and Nameless Things that lurk in the deepest shadows beneath Middle-earth.
Creatures Strange and Foul is written by Francesco Nepitello (lead designer of The One Ring), with additional writing by Michele Garbuggio and gloriously illustrated by Daniel Zrom. The 5E adaptation of this volume will be released under the title Of Orcs and Evil Things.
“Southward he looked, and below his very feet the Great River curled like a toppling wave and plunged over the falls of Rauros into a foaming pit; a glimmering rainbow played upon the fume. And Ethir Anduin he saw, the mighty delta of the River, and myriads of sea-birds whirling like a white dust in the sun, and beneath them a green and silver sea, rippling in endless lines.” –The Fellowship of the Ring
Dedicated to the lands of Gondor and Rohan, The White Tower and the Hall of Goldis a massive campaign expansion exploring the last great realms of Men in the west of Middle-earth, where ancient traditions still endure in the shadow of the Enemy.
The lands of Gondor are described in detail, from the Guarded City of Minas Tirith and the fiefs of the South-kingdom to ancient fortresses, forgotten ruins, and dangerous borderlands.
The Kingdom of Rohan is explored in depth, including its history, great halls, wide plains, and the strongholds of the Riddermark.
Landmarks, campaign frameworks, and adventure hooks provide Loremasters with material for long journeys and heroic tales across both realms.
