CRYPT OF CREATURES

CRYPT OF CREATURES

A Multi-System Bestiary for D&D 5E (2024), Shadowdark & More

Your players have fought dragons. They’ve faced undead hordes, giant spiders, and the usual roster of creatures they’ve memorized across a hundred sessions. They know the tactics, the resistances, the patterns. That moment of genuine surprise β€” of not knowing what the monster is going to do next β€” is rare. Crypt of Creatures exists to give that moment back to every table.

What Is Crypt of Creatures?

Crypt of Creatures is a fully original, publication-quality monster bestiary built from the ground up for multiple tabletop RPG systems. Every creature was designed with a purpose,

These are not reskinned classics. There are no dragons with a palette swap, no goblins with a single new ability tacked on. Every entry in this book β€” from the smallest Standard threat to the campaign-ending Mythic Boss β€” is an original creation built to surprise, challenge, and reward the parties who face it.

Crypt of Creatures launches with two native systems and grows from there:

β€’         D&D 5th Edition (2024 rules) β€” fully updated stat blocks using the current action economy, 2024 attack formatting, and proficiency-verified math throughout

β€’         Shadowdark β€” native builds honoring that system’s stripped-down lethality, old-school design philosophy, and brutal table feel

Every shared creature is not a conversion β€” it is a native build. The D&D 5E version and the Shadowdark version of each creature are designed from the ground up for their respective system’s math, tone, and encounter design.

What You Get

At Launch: 130 Monsters Per System Book

β€’         120 shared monsters β€” fully statted for both D&D 5E (2024) and Shadowdark, covering every tier of play from introductory threats to campaign-defining encounters

β€’         10 system-exclusive monsters per book β€” creatures designed specifically for the mechanical identity of each system, available only in their respective version

Every stat block includes:

β€’         Full system-native formatting with proficiency-verified math

β€’         Rich flavor text and in-world description

β€’         Habitat, Role, and Treasure entries

β€’         A dedicated Tactics section β€” how each creature fights, thinks, and retreats

β€’         Aftermath text β€” what the world looks like after this thing is dead

Four Tiers of Threat

Crypt of Creatures organizes its monsters into four distinct tiers, each representing a different level of mechanical complexity, action economy, and table impact. Every tier is designed to feel different to run, not just different in power.

Tier 1: Standard
(CR 0–3)

Clean, focused stat blocks built for immediate usability. Standard creatures are the building blocks of encounter design β€” individually manageable, dangerous in groups, and mechanically transparent enough that new GMs can run them confidently without referencing a wall of text mid-session. Every Standard creature has a clear identity, a reason to exist, and at least one mechanical hook that makes it more interesting than its CR alone suggests.

Tier 2: Elite
(CR 4–8)

Elite creatures are built for serious encounters. Each one includes Elite Actions β€” a pool of 2 special actions per round taken at the end of other creatures’ turns β€” giving them the action economy to pressure a full party without requiring the full legendary action framework. Elite creatures reward tactical play, punish passivity, and are designed to be the memorable fight at the end of the session rather than the warm-up.

Tier 3: Living Bestiary
(CR 9–15)

The flagship tier. Living Bestiary creatures are fully realized apex threats built for campaign-defining encounters. Each one includes: Living Actions (taken at initiative count 20, rotating so no two rounds play identically), Legendary Actions (sustained between-turn pressure), Legendary Resistance, Defeat Conditions (explicit designed paths to end the encounter permanently, because some creatures should not simply be reduced to zero and forgotten), and Aftermath (what changes in the world after this creature falls). Living Bestiary creatures are not just strong monsters. They are events.

Tier 4: Mythic Boss
(CR 16+)

The rarest and most elaborate tier. Mythic Boss creatures are campaign-ending, reality-warping threats that fundamentally change how an encounter is run. Each one features a Mythic Phase trigger β€” a mid-combat escalation that transforms the creature and the battlefield when a specific condition is met. They have phased combat mechanics, multi-condition Defeat requirements, and Aftermath sections that describe consequences that ripple across entire campaigns. Mythic Bosses are not encountered. They are survived.

The Stretch Goal Roadmap

Crypt of Creatures grows with your support. Every stretch goal adds either more monsters to every active system book or unlocks an entirely new native system with its own set of exclusive creatures. Goals alternate between the two β€” so whether you care about volume or system breadth, every goal delivers something new.

The exclusive monster count grows together across all active systems simultaneously. When a new system unlocks mid-campaign, it joins at the current exclusive count and grows alongside all other systems from that point forward. Every system that unlocks receives the same exclusive pool as the systems that came before it.

Base Campaign β€” 130 Monsters Per Book

D&D 5E (2024) and Shadowdark launch with 120 shared monsters + 10 system-exclusive each.

The Stretch Goal Ladder

20 exclusives per active system β€” 140 monsters per book

Goal 2: 10 More Exclusives β€”

Goal 3: OSE Unlocks β€”
Old-School Essentials joins at 30 exclusives β€” 150 monsters in the OSE book

Goal 4: 10 More Exclusives β€”

Goal 8: 10 More Exclusives β€”

Goal 9: Pathfinder 2E Unlocks β€”

Goal 13: DCC unlocks- Dungeon Craw Classic joins at 80 exclusives per active system β€” 200 monsters per book across up to 8 systems

At full stretch, every system book reaches 200 monsters. Every system that unlocks throughout the campaign ends the project with the same exclusive content as the systems that launched with it. No system is a lesser version of another.

Why Back This?

Because your players deserve monsters that surprise them.

Because you deserve stat blocks that are correct, complete, and ready to run without a calculator, a second reference document, or a mental audit of whether the math holds up.

Because a bestiary should be something you read, not just something you use β€” and every creature in Crypt of Creatures was written to be worth reading on its own terms. The flavor text tells you what the creature is. The Tactics section tells you how to run it. The Aftermath tells you what it leaves behind. Nothing is wasted.

Because the four-tier system means this book works at every level of play. You can open it on session one for a Standard encounter and return to it for a Mythic Boss at the end of a two-year campaign, and it will deliver at both ends.

Because multi-system support is real support β€” not a conversion afterthought but native builds designed for the table you actually play at, in the system that actually fits your group.
