Each sigil is based on a character class, originating from classic fantasy games and stories - but I hope to elevate them to archetypes that we all embody in one way or another. I'm drawing from the traditions of runic symbols and talismans that carry the weight of meaning in a beautiful form of line and shape. Each delicate talisman embodies the essence of an archetype to be worn as a personal invocation of the spirit within.
From the Warlock's sigil as the Vessel to be filled with power, to the Rogue's sigil as the Infiltrator to pierce past the boundaries - each runic design is meant to invoke their spirit - or yours.
Which sigil calls to you? Which archetype will you summon?
To start with, I wanted to share my first design - the Warlock - or as its archetype - the Vessel.
To invoke the Warlock, invoke the Vessel - is to open ones self up to a power beyond your own and accept the bonds that come with it.
The Vessel's power is not inherited by birthright or bestowed by faith, it begins with an exchange -- a pact with some entity greater, stranger, or more dangerous than one's self. To become the vessel is to make space for that other power within yourself; to carry it, draw from it, and inevitably be altered by it. There is agency to the choice, a binding that goes both ways, but never complete possession.
Something is given. Something is owed.
I designed this sigil to reflect that tension between receptivity and constraint. It's arching forms embrace a central opening, a negative space - enclosing without fully closing. Within that space, a spine carries the eye upward toward something else, just beyond reach. It is both a container and a conduit.
This talisman is a symbol for those willing to reach beyond the limits of their own power, to call into the shadows, to seek into the void above filled with stars - and accept whatever answers, no matter the cost.
In addition, I thought I would share some sketches and ideas I have for the other pins - to help show what the collection will feel like. These are a few more that I have been playing with and getting a feel for what I want each sigil to feel like.
These are still in the work in progress stage, but I feel like they capture the feeling I want for their archetype. For the Monk, I knew I wanted something spiraling, a circle to be completed through motion but also embodying a wholeness and centeredness within one's self. For the Rogue, I wanted a form that felt piercing and delicate, like a key or lockpick, yet stretching out into many directions. For the Druid, I wanted something more solid and tangled with varied forms and shapes weaving together, as forces of nature, of scattered pieces of living things forming one whole.
I'll be collaborating with my friend and fellow artist Allen Morris, who will be joining Pintopia for the first time! We are creating a pair of companion campaigns, both titled, Invocations.
Both of our campaigns are creating sigils from beautiful sculpted metal to be worn as jewelry and invoke the spirit of different character class archetypes. Take a look at Allen's side of 'Invocations' here:
