Launching

January 2027

It's unfathomable how many modern medicines come from nature. We're not just talking preparations of flowers and herbs used to treat common ailments since ancient times, but also life-changing treatments isolated and made safe from deadly sources - the venom of snakes, vampire bat saliva, and poisonous plants.

This pin collection explores how plants and animals have cured blood disorders, keeping the blood flowing, fixing wounds and helping the heart to keep a regular rhythm.

As well as pins, this collection features stickers and a much-anticipated zine: the science behind Blood & Medicine in a richly-illustrated, engaging and easy-to-understand format.

I started by exploring some drawings of the heart for this campaign, and more protein structures. This is a sketch of haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in the blood. I think it's already quite beautiful, although I wish I hadn't started it on lined paper!

Joining Pintopia?
Thanks so much to everyone who responded to my poll. Unfortunately life got on top of me over the Summer and I had to duck out of the Super League of Science. I hope you enjoyed it though!

Having had a break, the creative juices are bubbling and I'm back to thinking about what's next. I'm still keen to publish a zine (although I don't know that anyone in the whole history of zines has taken this long to actually just get on and do it!). Current thought is a zine about bacteria chomping up oil spills and other trash. I want to do a couple of in-person zine-related events in the north of England next Spring. In that case, I'd be looking to launch some kind of zine + stickers collection with Backerkit in February.

However, BEFORE that we have Pintopia. I'm super tempted to pick up this Heart project for this. What do you think? It will be a pins + stickers collection, as I had been thinking before - hearts and chemical structures. I might need to rebrand a bit to fit into Pintopia, since it's so huge it's easy to get lost in there.

One question though, what type of pins? Wooden, eco-metal or enamel?
