The Nibelungen Tarot is a complete 78-card deck that unites the timeless myth of Siegfried, Kriemhild, and the cursed Rhinegold with the eternal symbols of the tarot.
Each card glows in Gustav Klimt’s Art Nouveau brilliance, a dance of gold, ornament, and fate.
✨ About the Deck
I grew up in Germany, where the Nibelungenlied and Wagner’s Ring der Nibelungen became a profound part of my cultural identity. These stories of fate, love, betrayal, and tragedy have deeply shaped my sense of heritage.
As both a lifelong admirer of Art Nouveau and Gustav Klimt, I felt compelled to unite history and art in the form of the Nibelungen Tarot. I began by sketching the first visual concepts and carefully weaving the characters and themes of the saga into the traditional meanings of the tarot.
Drawing from a vast treasury of old German symbols and motifs, and using my digital expertise in visualization, I created designs that balance intricate detail with striking overall composition. Over time, a cohesive artistic style emerged that brings all 78 cards together in shimmering harmony.
The result is a tarot deck that not only maintains a consistently high artistic level, but also playfully tells the story of the Nibelungen while expanding the tarot’s original meaning.
🗡️ A Short Tale of the Nibelungen
Once, deep in the Rhine, the maidens guarded a treasure of radiant gold. A treasure of power and doom, destined to shape the fate of kings and heroes.
From distant lands came Siegfried, hero of light and fearless heart. He bathed in the dragon’s blood after slaying the monstrous Fafnir, gaining near invincibility – save for a single hidden place upon his back. With strength and courage he won the hand of fair Kriemhild, and his star shone brightly in the halls of Burgundy.
Yet shadows grew. Through guile and treachery, alliances turned bitter. Brünnhilde’s fire, Hagen’s spear, and Kriemhild’s wrath intertwined in a spiral of vengeance that consumed kingdoms. Love and betrayal, loyalty and revenge – all bound by the inexorable thread of fate.
The Nibelungenlied, a legend forged in fire and sorrow, echoes through the ages. Now, in this tarot deck, it is reborn in golden visions, inviting you to walk the path between myth and divination.
