As the world was emerging from Covid, Adam had a moment of convergence. He'd been reading news stories about museums and historical sites struggling to draw visitors back, he'd just watched National Treasure, and he was devouring GameLit/LitRPG novels. He thought about how much fun it would be to play a real-life National Treasure adventure—at, say, the Smithsonian.

The first challenge was obvious: at a place like that, nothing can be touched and nothing can be installed, not even a QR code. To a technologist, the answer was immediately apparent—Augmented Reality. Let the clues, puzzles, and everything else live in AR space, visible only through a phone.

Excited, he called his close friend Zach and described the concept. He had a different take: what if they combined all of it with a tabletop roleplaying game? Players could experience adventures in real-world locations and Game Masters could build side quests and session enhancements for their own campaigns.

Thus began a five-year mission journey—with many starts, stops, failures, pivots, technology improvements, and slow steps forward to where we are today: a functional AR TTRPG app, built on Chaosium's BRP game mechanics, that you can play right now.

We have a long roadmap ahead, and we invite you to join us, back us, and explore this concept together.

(Adam's note: Honestly? I've been dreaming of a real-life RPG experience since I read Dream Park by Larry Niven and Steven Barnes decades ago.)

📖 Chapter One is Live!
We're excited to announce that the first chapter of our companion LitRPG serial, The Framework - Dodge & Kylan: Initiation, is now live on Royal Road!

This story runs takes place inside of one of QuestXR's game worlds, giving you a taste of the lore, characters, and AR-adventure spirit that inspired the app — think of your favorite LitRPG/GameLit adventure series, but with BRP game mechanics.

Read it, follow it, and let us know what you think in the comments. New chapters drop regularly, so bookmark it and come along for the ride.

Synopsis:

Dodge has spent his whole life reading about people with extraordinary abilities. He never expected to become one — until an ordinary afternoon at the Getty Museum turns into anything but.

Kylan is everything Dodge isn't: confident, athletic, the kind of person who commands a room without trying. When she asks the school's resident Dickens obsessive for help with an English paper, neither of them expects much to come of it. But somewhere between illicit museum photos and stories about the people they carry with them, something shifts. Two people who should have nothing in common start to realize they might have everything in common.

Then the Framework finds them.

In an instant, Dodge and Kylan are ripped from their ordinary lives and dropped into a training dungeon — a living, breathing simulation of Victorian London, stalked by undead and worse. Stat sheets. Skills. A Synergy Perk that binds them together whether they like it or not. The rules are simple: grow strong enough to survive, or don't survive at all.

The nerd and the jock never had a reason to know each other. Now they're each other's only chance of making it out alive.

A LitRPG adventure built on Chaosium's Basic Roleplaying system, where survival depends less on stats — and more on who's got your back.

🎉 We're Live! 🎉
🤝 WE KEEP OUR PROMISES! 🤝
🎮 QuestXR is open for live playtesting!
That's right — no more waiting, no more "soon™," just you, our app, and the sweet, sweet chaos of pre-release bugs. We can't promise it's perfect, but we CAN promise it's ready for YOU to break it and tell us what’s wrong (and tell what is great!):
So go ahead — poke around, make a character, beat up some zombies, and yell at us in #bug-reporting. We built this for you, so come mess it up with us. 😈
Let's goooo!
