As the world was emerging from Covid, Adam had a moment of convergence. He'd been reading news stories about museums and historical sites struggling to draw visitors back, he'd just watched National Treasure, and he was devouring GameLit/LitRPG novels. He thought about how much fun it would be to play a real-life National Treasure adventure—at, say, the Smithsonian.
The first challenge was obvious: at a place like that, nothing can be touched and nothing can be installed, not even a QR code. To a technologist, the answer was immediately apparent—Augmented Reality. Let the clues, puzzles, and everything else live in AR space, visible only through a phone.
Excited, he called his close friend Zach and described the concept. He had a different take: what if they combined all of it with a tabletop roleplaying game? Players could experience adventures in real-world locations and Game Masters could build side quests and session enhancements for their own campaigns.
Thus began a five-year mission journey—with many starts, stops, failures, pivots, technology improvements, and slow steps forward to where we are today: a functional AR TTRPG app, built on Chaosium's BRP game mechanics, that you can play right now.
We have a long roadmap ahead, and we invite you to join us, back us, and explore this concept together.
(Adam's note: Honestly? I've been dreaming of a real-life RPG experience since I read Dream Park by Larry Niven and Steven Barnes decades ago.)
