I grew up with AD&D 2nd edition, 1st edition, and the boxed sets of D&D before 1st edition. I've played a game or two of D&D 5.5th edition, and I like it. I'm in love with Decuma. (It's the R&D for your TTRPG!)
I prefer less crunchy more narrative games, such as those Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) such as Masks, Monster of the Week, Impulse Drive, Dungeon World, and Starscape. I think the Cypher system is cool too. I'm currently designing Explorers & Envoys, a fast-paced, easy-to-learn, low combat, science-fiction TTRPG that emphasizes collaborative problem solving, exploration, negotiation, working around enemies, thinking outside the box as well as science & technology.
