Wardens of the Blue Rose
Return to the world of Aldea and the Commonwealth of the Blue Rose in a light roleplaying game of mapcrawling YA heroes.
Over 20 years ago, Green Ronin Publishing first brought gamers to the world of Aldea with Blue Rose: The Roleplaying Game of Romantic Fantasy. Now it’s time to step into the world of Blue Rose once again, and explore the Commonwealth of Aldis as young heroes.
In Wardens of the Blue Rose you play a warden of Aldis: a young adult charged with traveling the land and helping the people you meet. Sometimes this is as simple as raising a barn, finding a lost herd, or healing a divided community. Sometimes it means investigating dark ruins left from the fallen Empire of Thorns, or helping people fend off monsters. As Wardens, it’s your job to help–and as young people making your way through the Commonwealth of Aldis, it’s time to explore who you really are, and forge bonds of love and friendship to last a thousand adventures.
Why the Wardens?
Wardens are young adults, but they’re also trained adventurers, educated by their elders at the Wardens’ school, Thornreap, to help the people of the Commonwealth of Aldis. Founded after a terrible sorcerous war, Aldis upholds justice, celebrates difference, and values compassion . . . but it’s not perfect. People need your help! But why should you become a warden?
- Play solo or in a group using the streamlined SAGE System, learnable in minutes. The rules generate scenarios for you, but you can also devise your own as you mapcrawl the Commonwealth of Aldis. As you influence the world, you change locations on the map, creating friends and foes.
- Enjoy or defend a land where gay, lesbian, transgender, and other diverse identities are honored.
- You might be a rhydan: an intelligent, telepathic animal with the same rights as other beings in Aldis, or you might belong to one or more of a number of other ancestries, from the mystical vata to the hardy night people.
- Channel psychic magic, and explore the mighty artifacts left by lost civilizations.
- Solve problems and enjoy slice-of-life play. Build a house. Fall in love.
- Use the Fortune game mechanic to enjoy the fate of a hero. Use Bonds to give your beliefs, loves and hates power. Together, Fortune and Bonds help you use Stunts, where your character performs special moves and exceptional deeds.
Aldea Reborn
The Commonwealth of Aldis exists as part of the world of Aldea, made by Primordials and other gods and threatened by the Shadow. For over two decades, previous Blue Rose games developed Aldea through the lens of traditional roleplaying. With Wardens of the Blue Rose, we’ve changed Aldea into a world suited to many types of stories, of which the Wardens’ missions are but a few.
In the process, we’ve taken steps to update the setting. Blue Rose games have always been unique in that instead of treating good like an abstract metaphysical force, good is actually good. It stands against racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. It values dialogue and free expression. It glorifies love and seeks peace. That means it’s time to reconcile the setting with our evolving values–and to change a few things Blue Rose developers have always wanted to change.
If you’ve played Blue Rose roleplaying games before, Wardens of the Blue Rose provides the latest word in the setting. This also includes expanded inspirations. Decades ago, Blue Rose was inspired by the romantic fantasy genre of the 80s and 90s. Wardens incorporates notes from Ghibli movies and slice of life anime and manga, modern “romantasy” fiction, and YA fiction. If this is your first journey to the world of Blue Rose, you’ll find a setting ready for fun, romance and adventure–you don’t need to care about “canon.”
