Marshmallow Fields is an art installation of thirty marshmallow bales in a farming field
The 'Marshmallow Fields' is a project where, on the one hand, aims to offer the chance to spectators to experience and interact in real life with one of the fantasies some of us have had while traveling to or through the countryside. Through a beautiful, almost surreal, edible landscape we want to give the audience the chance to run, jump, embrace and, why not, eat those giant ‘hay’ bales made of marshmallow instead. On the other hand, we would like to open a discussion in the critical minds of our visitors around our position as everyday citizens in our food system.
Marshmallow might be the quintessential candy that represents not only the hyper-industrialisation of our agricultural and food practices but also our everyday comforts.
Sugar (in the form of candy) carries a negative stigma. It is usually called on as “hazardous”, “bomb of calories”, etc. –but we also believe it can also serve as a vehicle for socialisation and education in taste. Challenging the values of gastronomy and food heritage, our work constantly imagines alternative possibilities re-signifying the consumption of food, and in this case sugar and candies in the form of marshmallow.
We are working on this project through a 'comfort' candy that brings together three of the most industrialised food ingredients: sugar, gelatine and corn starch. By enlarging and exaggerating the dimensions of marshmallows, we want to take this type of candy as a tool to question or show certain aspects of human behaviour.

We do not necessarily want to tell a specific story, or explain something in particular. We just want to offer a different perception of reality and let the audiences build their own imaginaries, contest our situations as citizens in the food system, and why not, let them critically question our artistic decisions.
