What is it? "Heliruna" (hɛlə.ɹuˈ.nə) is a horror novel, a tragedy set in dusty small-town Kansas of yesteryear. It features a queer disabled protagonist, a lesbian love interest, a plentiful helping of slasher goodness, and what one of my beta readers called "the scariest goddamn monster I've ever read." While my first novel is a story of revenge and man-versus-nature, this is a story of everything in the world going wrong while one girl who has every excuse to just lay down and die absolutely refuses to let it break her. For fans of Stephen Graham Jones, Michael Crichton, and Shirley Jackson.
What do you get? A pledge here counts as a preorder of the novel. A $5 pledge will get you an ebook copy, available in all the major ebook formats. A $15 pledge will get you an autographed paperback copy. I've also included the option to go all-in with a $50 pledge, which I don't have anything extra to give you at this time except my gratitude, but you'll also get an autographed paperback copy. Those who preordered my first novel got some extra goodies with it, so I'll try to make some of those too (stickers, bookmarks, and whatever else I cook up - it's like Christmas!)
When do you get it? If all goes according to plan, "Heliruna" should release on September 18, 2026! Preordered copies should be mailed out a few days prior, to try and make them arrive on release day.
Who am I? My name is Hazel E. Baumgartner. I'm an author, visual artist, and musician from Colorado, USA. I released my first novel, "The Woods", on November 2, 2024, and am now proud to present my second! I've also written several short scary stories which I've shared on Reddit, and I'm overall a massive horror nerd (though I also really enjoy fantasy and science fiction).
