About the Game

A hand holds a book up, while another copy hangs over the edge of a table to show the back cover. The cover of the book reads: “Midnight in Jubilation by Dorian Blackwood.” The central image is of a silhouetted figure falling away from a large moon with distortions all around them. The text in the bottom left cover reads: "A5. 100 pages. Softcover or Hardcover.”

Midnight in Jubilation is an urban horror roleplaying game (RPG) designed for solo journalling. You play as the newest overnight radio presenter in a small, strange town called Jubilation. A place that can't seem to decide exactly when or where it should be. A place you had to be guided to over the phone.

You were pretty desperate when the call came from Jubilation Radio Station, offering you the position. The result of a lifetime of poor decision-making that you refuse to take responsibility for. But a few weeks in, you’re starting to wonder if you shouldn’t have at least questioned why the position was vacant. If you’re lucky, you might even live long enough to find out.

"Midnight in Jubilation was a delightful jaunt through a horror scape of my own creativity. Creepy small town, townsfolk gaslighting me, horrid monsters in the night, and a deeply flawed character who heralded their own destruction. 10/10 experience." Dylan Rock, Indiverse.
Three dot points with a grungy outline which read: "Take unsettling calls on the radio, decide the show's nightly program, and attempt to survive..."
Midnight in Jubilation is presented in A5 format. This 100-page book features extensive Narrative Guides to support solo play, with prompts for nightly broadcasts, exploring the town, and encountering Threats. This includes over 12 distinct locations, more than 18 unique non-player characters (NPCs) to interact with, and dozens of prompts for the radio. As well as handouts to unravel the cruel fate of your predecessor. Although the deeper you dig, the more danger you will encounter.

The Town of Jubilation

A town map from an overhead perspective, at enough distance that no houses are visible. Only main streets and outlines of occupied land. Sixteen locations are highlighted with numbers in dark squares. To the side is text that reads: "Welcome to Jubilation, everywhere/nowhere, population 2,500." Below which are three check boxes with the text: "12+ Locations, 18+ Unique NPCs, Horrific Threats and Bizarre Encounters". In the bottom right corner is an image of a snarling person's face looming over a microphone as a wolf's head splits from the top of their skull. A rough speech bubble from their humanoid mouth reads: "Plus scraps alluding to the fate of your predecessor."

Jubilation: a small town where the tourists rarely stop and the locals rarely leave. A town full of secrets and monsters. If some of those monsters do wear human skin, you certainly don’t want to know where they got it from.

On paper, Jubilation’s population is a meagre 2,500 people. A figure which almost triples once the sun has stolen away across the encroaching tree line. But if the locals find this strange, they certainly don’t say so out loud. It’s enough that the town’s economy is robust, and the demand keeps businesses open all hours of the day and night.

During the game, Presenters will be spending their nights either at Jubilation Radio Station or in the town itself. However, you will quickly discover that nowhere is safe. Not even for those who’ve lived in this version of Jubilation all their lives.

That’s why Presenters like you are so desperate to leave a record of what’s happened to you through journalling. Whether that’s with pen and paper, a phone, a camera, or a computer.
A camera, an esoteric sigil, a blank notebook and pen, and an open laptop with a strange image displayed on the screen. Over the top is text that reads: "If you don't leave anything behind when you die, how can you be sure you were even truly alive?"

The Creator and Their Inspiration

An illustration of a Caucasian person with glasses, hearing aids, and brown hair that goes past their shoulders. They are looking to their right, pushing back their hair with one hand to expose their hearing aid. A D20 hangs from their earring, a sunflower is visible on their wrist on a simple bracelet, and they are holding a pen between the fingers of the hand pushing back their hair. To their left is an image of the moon, and text that reads: "Dorian Blackwood (they/them)."
Dorian Blackwood (they/them) is a disabled creator with a deep love for narrative-focused RPGs. Over the decades they have enjoyed playing a variety of games, but found their real passion is for horror and darker tales in particular. Although they do also enjoy making games for younger dicelings.

Midnight in Jubilation comes from an idea I had for a monstrous town after I was thoroughly terrified by the movie Pontypool, based on the Tony Burgess novel Pontypool Changes Everything. Over time it evolved, absorbing elements of weird tales and horror from stories by Shirley Jackson, Algernon Blackwood, and H.P. Lovecraft; to name a few. I feel that fans of Welcome to Nightvale and Void 1680 AM would also love this game. You may also like to read the short story a friend recommended after I first described my game to them; The Nightwire by H.F. Arnold.

You can find the gameplay preview on my Itch page, linked below. Noting that there have been some changes made as I finalised the layout for the book.

A banner that reads: "Download the free preview on Itch.io", followed by an image of a hand tapping on the banner with one finger. Beneath that heading are screenshots of a two-page spread and completed character sheet, with an icon indicating a file download.

Shipping, Sustainability, and Project Timeline

Shipping

All shipping costs for the physical book are estimates only. After the campaign ends, shipping will be calculated and charged more accurately via the pledge manager. Your country may also charge value-added tax (VAT) or other import taxes as part of shipping costs, which you will be responsible for paying if your country enforces them.

Please note I’m unable to ship to some countries like Sudan, Russia, Ukraine, Iran, and Brazil.

Shipping Cost Estimates

  • Asia: AUD$28
  • Australia: AUD$15
  • Canada: AUD$25
  • Europe: AUD$30
  • New Zealand: AUD$18
  • United Kingdom: AUD$30
  • United States: AUD$35

I’ve been advised that Australia Post may be making changes to parcel postage in May 2026, requiring additional recipient contact details (e.g. email and phone number) in order to generate shipping labels. I will only be requesting the information that is necessary to generate the proper shipping labels and meet customs requirements.

Sustainability

If you would prefer to avoid emissions associated with printing and shipping a physical book, Midnight in Jubilation does have a digital-only pledge.

Project Timeline

The digital documents for Midnight in Jubilation are complete and have been reviewed by an accessibility consultant to confirm they are screen reader compatible. I have also received a test print of the softcover book to confirm printing quality. However, any additional content will need to be reviewed for accessibility, and the hardcover version also tested for print quality. Some aspects of timing are also outside of my control when it comes to the physical books. Such as the time it takes the printing company to fulfil the order, and how long it takes for packages to reach you.

Proudly Human Made

An artistic rendering of a hand in black. Between the thumb and index finger there is a swirl that extends to the middle of the palm which has not been filled in. There is also a similar curving line near the base of the hand, on the pinkie-finger side, that stops in the middle of the palm below the swirl.
Midnight in Jubilation is proudly human-made. No artificial intelligence (AI) was used in the writing, testing, or design process.
