Project Update: Forging the Crown: Our Origin Story
Hello everyone,
Today, we wanted to share a more personal story with you—the story of how CROWN came to be. It’s a story about friendship, passion, and the courage to build a dream from the ground up.
The tale of CROWN begins not in a boardroom, but in a university dorm room. Its creators, Vic Wu and Philo Zhang, were roommates and classmates, both graduating from the Game Design & Production program in 2014. Long before they entered the professional world, their bond was forged over a shared, deep-seated love for board games. They didn't just play them; they lived them, even founding a board game club on campus to share that passion with others.
After graduation, their paths diverged. They moved to different cities and joined two of the biggest names in the gaming industry: Vic at Tencent and Philo at NetEase. There, they honed their skills, contributing to major projects including titles within the League of Legends universe. Vic gained deep experience across game production, design, and operations, while Philo focused on the visual arts, later taking on the role of Lead Artist for several excellent games.
But even as they built successful careers miles apart, they felt a growing desire for something more. They were contributing to amazing games, but it often felt like they were only crafting a single piece of a much larger machine. The dream that began in their university club—to create a complete world, a tangible experience from start to finish, a true game of their own—never faded.
In 2022, they reunited to take a leap of faith. Leaving their stable careers behind, Vic and Philo came together to co-found BinaryStar Studio, committing themselves full-time to their shared ambition. Their very first project, born from years of dedication and countless hours of design, is the game that has brought us all here today: CROWN: The Succession War.
This is our first project, and it carries the weight of our entire story. We hope that when you open the box, you'll feel the passion and dedication we've poured into it.
