Project Update: Public Health And Safety Reminder

We're thrilled that Big Bad Con is right around the corner! Before you head out to the con, please review our COVID-19 and public health safety requirements:

1. Pack your COVID-19 Vaccination Records

We're happy to accept vaccination records in any form (physical card, picture of your card, apps, etc), however we require proof of vaccination before entering the con. So please make sure to pack that card, take a pick, or check your app before you head out the door.

2. Test before you head out

Please take a COVID test before you get to the con (preferably 24-72 hours before) and confirm that you have a negative result. We'll have rapid tests available (for free) to anyone who needs them, but supplies are limited so please pack them if you have them!

3. Vaccination Check - First thing to do when you Arrive!

Before doing anything else at the con, check into the Vaccination Screening station. It is located just inside the double doors near the main entrance. Here's a map for directions.

At the screening station, they will ask for your proof of vaccination and to confirm that you've taken a recent COVID text and confirmed you were negative.

4. Mask that provide KN95 or better protection required

We require masks in all convention spaces that require KN95 or better protection. Those include KN95, KF94, N95, and many of the more advanced masks (like Flo masks). The following mask do not provide enough protection against recent variants and so they are not sufficient:Cloth masksSurgical masksFace coverings with exhalation valvesMesh materialsCostume masksFor more on our mask requirements, see our public health policy.

Now is the perfect time to go buy or order masks so they are available in time for the convention. Big Bad Con will have some convention branded masks and COVID tests available, but supplies are limited.

Very excited to see you all at the con. Thanks for everything that you do to help keep yourself and everyone else safe!

Best,

Sean and the Big Bad Con Programming Team

Project Update: Surveys going out soon - Activate your Big Bad Con badge!

Hi all,

Thank you once again for your support! Later today we'll send out surveys to 5% of our backers to test our pledge management configuration. After 48 hours, assuming there were no hiccups that cause a delay, we'll send surveys out to everyone.

This year, we've automated badge activation. If you pledged at a level that includes one or more badges (or added badges to your order), once your survey is complete you'll receive a unique code for each badge in your BackerKit Digital Downloads. Here's how it works:

  1. Go to your Digital Downloads.
  2. Go to the Big Bad Con Claim Your Badge page and login.
  3. Enter you Badge Claim Code to activate your badge!

If you have any issues you can either use the BackerKit support or email us ([email protected]). If you are activating multiple badges, make sure to log out and log back in with each account you want to activate. Each code can only be used once.

Will people be able to purchase badges after the current campaign is over, or are they exclusive to this campaign ? I ask as I have friends who are interested but can't afford to back at the moment.

Hello, I have few questions about the event sing up sheet. 1.) After I specify board/card game, it asks what system ad requires an answer. I do not know how to answer this for sure, since I plan to run board games, do I answer board games? 2.) it later asks if I want to run the game multiple times. I am willing to do this for many games, but when it asks for how long the event is, do I answer projected game length times the number of games, or just how long I expect teaching and running the game to take? Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, I just want to make sure I'm not submitting things the wrong way and making more work for you guys on the other end.

Project Update: BBC Larps

Jenn here! I’m the Larp Coordinator for BBC and I wanted to share some of the events happening at the convention this year that I’m excited about!

If you’re seeking situation comedy laughs, I personally recommend the following two games. Strange Gravity let me personally play out my wish to be on the bridge of a starship and though I haven’t played We Are Not Vampires, I can tell you that Jason’s games are always a good time.

  • In Strange Gravity, run by Antonio Morton, a crew of daring spacefarers will hurtle through the infinite void of space at speeds that defy understanding in the search for something more. Think Star Trek meets Firefly, with narrative authority related to your character’s role on the ship.
  • In We Are Not Vampires, run by Jason Morningstar, players are regular folks doing regular stuff in normal ways on a reality show competing for a quarter of a million dollars! Competitors will be put to the test, going head-to-head in contests designed to test their humanity in ways both simple and complex. They will compete to see who can adopt a pet, eat a meal convincingly, make small talk, and they are definitely not vampires!

It’s not all comedy in the world of live action roleplaying, though. Larp can be a powerful way to examine  historical struggles, marginalization, and human nature itself.

  • All Options, run by Nico MacDougall is about the staff of a Midwest USA abortion clinic in the 1990s. Under mounting pressure from the anti-choice movement, can the staff continue to provide compassionate care for people seeking abortion? Through the course of their work in the abortion clinic the staff will have a chance to challenge and transform their own issues with their own sexuality or gender.
  • Bell & Key, run by Aaron Sunshine & Kate Hill, is about the struggles faced by grand hotel concierges amidst the rise of fascism in a fictionalized Europe in the lead-up to World War 2. They help each other face increasingly dire challenges and threats to the world over four Acts. While the game is intended to be tragic and explore weighty matters, there is an inherently farcical quality to the concierges, their profession, and some of the situations in which they find themselves

For the space we have this year- Larp rooms are 567 square feet with doors that open to the outside and we are keeping the adjacent room(s) empty to keep volume levels manageable.

If you’d rather try something Larp-adjacent, we’ve got a couple of social events to give you an excuse to play dress up! Both events will happen on Thursday night to kick off the convention.

  • In the 573rd Intergalactic Wicket Gala, run by Jenn Martin (that’s me!) players are all participating in an alien croquet tournament that bears a striking resemblance to the American Met Gala. The dress code is whatever makes you feel fancy! In this collaborative social event, we’ll make up rules and canon history as we go.
  • In the Big Bad Fashion Show hosted by Banana Chan & Aaron Catano-Saez, we'll be seeing some of the best in fashion strut their stuff. Attendees will walk the runway and judges will have closing remarks before the event turns to dancing. (On a personal note, Banana knows how to throw a party and this one is sure to be an amazing time!)

And finally, we’d love to add more Larps to our schedule! Go to bigbadcon.com/run-an-event to submit a Larp (or game, or panel!) Submissions are open until July 31!

When pledging “Badge & Tea”, I see ways to add more badges, but I didn’t see ways to add more badge+tea packages. Is there a way?
