Project Update: Progress & The Big Survey

Hello!

This a little update to let you know two things.

ONE

Progress with the novellas is on schedule. We're a little over halfway through the editing process, have some of the frontispiece illustrations already in hand, and are feeling good about meeting our goal of fulfillment happening in April.

TWO

Currently we are fulfilling three crowdfunds all together as part of a big combined survey, the first of its kind that Backerkit has ever done.

Understandably some people who have backed this crowdfund have been asking where their survey is - thinking that "New Edge Sword & Sorcery Novellas" might be part of this big mega survey.

It is not.

That big, combined survey only covers the following crowdfunds:

  • New Edge Sword & Sorcery 2025

  • Beating Hearts & Battle-axes

    and

  • Sometime Lofty Towers

If you've only backed "New Edge Sword & Sorcery Novellas" then don't worry, there's no survey for you to be looking for, nothing you need to do right now.

You'll hear from us some time in March, though we'll try for at least one progress update before. Until then, happy holidays from all of us here at Brackenbury Books!

Project Update: Has your pledge gone through?

Heya!

For New Edge Sword & Sorcery Novellas we still have 7 failed credit card charges, so you may wish to check if your pledge has gone through.

If it hasn't, you can comment beneath this update and we'll respond, or perhaps first you can check out this help page for ways you may be able to resolve the issue yourself: https://help.backerkit.com/category/616-payment

Meanwhile the wheels keep turning on New Edge Sword & Sorcery Novellas but, as you can imagine, there isn't a lot more we can show you so soon after the crowdfund has ended.

Cheers,

Project Update: 136% Funded!!! (What Comes Next?)

IN SHORT

  • WE FUNDED! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  • We unlocked three stretch goals, adding a fifth title in the form of the novelette 'zine, making shipping cheaper for those outside the U.S., and enhancing the novellas with original illustrated fantasy maps!

  • Right now backers are being charged for their pledges.

  • Backers will be charged for shipping approx. four weeks before fulfillment. This is also likely when surveys will be sent out to collect necessary information such as mailing addresses, though the surveys may come sooner.

  • Our current goal for fulfillment is "Sometime in April 2026", so expect to be charged for shipping in March at the earliest. Backers in Canada will have a $5 USD shipping discount, all other backers living outside the United States will have a $10 USD shipping discount.

  • All backers are cordially invited to join our New Edge Sword & Sorcery Discord server through this link: https://discord.gg/HAjPqvxmDD

  • If you enjoyed guest interviewer Jay Requard from two of our crowdfund livestreams, you can check out more of his work here: https://www.youtube.com/@JayRequard

  • Do you dig Artyom Takhanov's illustrations? Then you should take a peek at the Kickstarter for a comic he illustrates, Sharp Eye. It has just under 48 hours left... https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sharp-eye/sharp-eye-issue-1

  • Though we'll be much quieter for a little while, if you'd like more regular updates and other fun info, we can be followed on Bluesky, Facebook, and Instagram. Keep an eye on them, or join our newsletter.

We've also made a rudimentary sign-up page for New Edge Sword & Sorcery 2026...and you get a free PDF of a back issue when you sign-up: https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/brackenbooks/new-edge-sword-sorcery-2026

Gaze upon our editor's magnificent original concept sketch he sent to Artyom Trakhanov, who MAYYYYYY have drawn something more impressive for the final cover art of Dariel's novella. (White boxes over spoilers)

IN DETAIL

We did it!

Some of you may have seen me on social media referring to this crowdfund as our "Final Boss" of all our publishing efforts thus far, that our success opens the door to a new era of sorts.

This is because, thanks to you, in 2026 we will now be able to graduate from "Magazine that dabbles in books" to "Publisher, with a cool magazine and awesome books!". We'll have more releases than ever before, and be able to spread them out over the year at regular intervals. Our whole dang game is levelling up and, incredibly, I - Oliver Brackenbury of Brackenbury Books - will be able to make publishing my full time job.

It is just a straight-up fact to say that this is life changing. You have changed my life, for the better! Thank you.

Alright Oliver, shaddup and tell the people about what's gonna happen with their novellas (and a 'zine!)...

STRONGLY recommend this place if you're ever in Toronto.

Fulfillment Schedule
"Some time in April 2026" is our goal for fulfillment. When we're closer to shipping we will do our best to provide a more specific date.

This means you can expect the survey where you pay for shipping and update any necessary info to be sent some time in March.

Production Progress
Two of our novellas are written and in the process of being edited, while the other two are due to begin editing a little later this month. The 'zine idea came later, so I don't expect to read that until the Christmas holidays -  however I gather the author is so excited that I may get it much sooner. I've worked with all of our authors before, including our 'zine author, and am unconcerned about their keeping to schedule.

Meanwhile the authors are all making wonderful rough maps for Darian Jones to extrapolate from, and I'll be reaching out to our interior illustrators this week about their frontispiece illustrations. I couldn't be less concerned about having these works done so we can get everything to the printer on time.

Something else in our favor is that we're using a printer based in the same state as our fulfillment center, which saves just scads of time in our schedule since the books have to travel so little distance to us.

Should there be any delays we'll keep you in the loop.

IDK why but the painter's tape was charming.

Please do join The New Edge Sword & Sorcery Discord, a great online hang-out that I'd love to see your digital faces in, a fun spot to chat about the magazine, Sword & Sorcery in general, and otherwise connect with your fellow readers, writers, artists, and more.

It's also a breeding ground for goofs like how Meatball Subs Are The Only Real Sandwich, and the only time I get to eat one is when we've finished funding another publication.

I felt most triumphant when tucking into this sucker last night!

It was....amazing.

Alright, that's all from me for now. Please make sure to read through IN SHORT for the practical details of what's happening with charging backers for pledges, charging for shipping, our rough schedule and more.

Once again with feeling, thank you for pledging & sharing, for making it possible for me to make something I love - books - into my new career! As you can imagine, I have plans galore for the future and now I can look at them on a much surer footing.

I can't reveal any of these plans yet, with the exception that we are of course continuing our magazine next year. What can I tell you about New Edge Sword & Sorcery 2026? For now, I can only tease you with a number that will be relevant to all our efforts in funding those issues.

Project Update: SHIPPING DISCOUNT UNLOCKED, LIVESTREAM TONIGHT, ONWARD TO MAPS!

SHIPPING DISCOUNT UNLOCKED!
$5 off Canadian shipping, $10 off shipping for all other nations outside the United States

You did it! Now all Canadians get five bucks off their shipping, and everybody else outside the United States gets $10 off their shipping.

With about 25 hours left in the crowdfund we can totally unlock our next stretch goal, a very cool book enhancement...

YOU GET A MAP! YOU GET A MAP! EVERY NOVELLA GETS A MAP!

A collection of fantasy and comic book illustrated maps by Darian Jones

From having designed all three maps for the Hanuvar series, and other projects, DARIAN JONES is here to provide original illustrated maps for every novella, with each map in a style matched to that novella's story.

Can we unlock these maps before the crowdfund ends at 4pm EST Tuesday Sept 30th aka TOMORROW

I bet we could!

Meanwhile...

LIVESTREAM - TONIGHT AT 7PM EST

Youtube thumbnail graphic. Caption reads: INTERVIEW WITH STEVE HUGH WESTENRA. The actual graphic is split between the cover art by Matt Spencer and an author portrait of Steve.

For our final evening, our final livestream, head editor Oliver Brackenbury will be chatting with Steve about the more cosmic & mysterious of our four novellas, ⚔️THE BARBARIAN AT DREAM'S END🪐...

You can watch it right at the top of our crowdfund page, where the project thumbnail will be until the stream starts at 7pm EST. Audience participation in the chat is very much encouraged!
