Tanith was the chief deity of Carthage (near modern-day Tunis) and it is still customary in Tunisia to invoke Omek Tannou ('Mother Tannou'), in years of drought to bring rain. And because Rob wouldn't make anything up, the story is entirely confirmed by this carving of the Symbol of Tanit (on a stone stele, dated to circa 500BCE, found in the site of ancient Carthage)!
