Ailuros Strangulans Derived from the ancient Greek word for cat (ailouros) which literally translates to “thing with a waving tail” and referred to long-tailed carnivores, and the Latin word for “one who strangles” in reference to how the English ivy chokes the life out of the plants it overtakes.
