So I am very excited about running this game! I love TTRPGs of every kind. My friends aren’t as into roll play, but they are into punk culture. I thought this would be the perfect way for us to share our interests. So I am going to run this for them. But I don’t really know anything about punk culture (I know I’ll do better). What are some songs I should listen to, books I should read, or movies I should watch so I don’t embarrass myself in front of my friends?

Project Update: The surveys are heading out!

Hey all,

Backerkit has approved everything we have set up for surveys, so we are ready to start the process of collecting your info.

The surveys allow you to add your delivery info and add any other items you may want to pick up.

Remember, there are no extra shipping fees if you add items to your order at this stage!

The surveys will remain open for about four weeks, and we will send out little nudges. You can still email us to change your address right up to fulfilment, and we'll let you know how to do that once the surveys are closed.

There will be an initial Smoke Test of around 200 surveys sent out in the first 24 hours, so don't worry if you don't get one immediately.

The remainder will be sent out on Friday.

Once we hit the start of June, I'll drop a timeline of production and fulfilment and we'll keep you updated all the way through the process!

Project Update: Missed the Punk Boat? Late pledges are here.

Hey there,

Please ignore this email if you pledged and were successfully charged.

If you missed the original campaign or your card had issues (this can happen with Backerkit processing issues), do not fear—late pledges are here.

We've set up a dedicated area on our website so you can grab the original pledges (excluding the back catalogue because everything else is available on the site.

Head on over to https://www.criticalkit.co.uk/collections/punk-is-dead-ttrpg and grab anything you need.

The late pledges on our site include shipping at checkout so you won't need to pay anything later.

I'm keeping the late pledges open for a couple of weeks and they will be closed when we launch surveys in mid-April.

Hasta la proxima!

Tim

Project Update: Game on! First look at the dice.

CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR DISCORD AND DISCUSS PUNK IS DEAD!

Heya!

We're a few days back from Lousiville for the Game Manufacturer's convention, and I'm herding cats (literally). Here's a photo of Sarah and myself with some of the most incredible indie TTRPG talent around, taken on what became affectionately known as the Carnage Pavilion.

L-to-R Charlie Menzies (Parable Games), Jay Dragon (Possum Creek Games), Darylle Johnson (Tiger Banana Pancake), Maz and Matt (Rowan, Rook & Decard), Mike (Mana Project), Barney Menzies (Parable Games), Me and Sarah (Critical Kit Ltd).

I'm back in the UK for a week before I head to Boston for PaxEast—just enough time to get over the jet lag before I induce it all over again. In these few days of relative calm, I've started working on any non-print-related items for Punk is Dead.

First up was a pull of the dice from the new moulds and an ink test. We wanted to see how the Neon Pantones worked with the resin and how close we could get to the book. Note that we have also tried yellow inks rather than silver. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that in the comments. We may be able to offer both as an option, but one colour would make the production process smoother. Anyway, are the tests and a proof of the book for comparison:

I will be working on more page layouts for the rest of my week, and I'll share them when I feel they are ready to see daylight.

Finally, as you might have seen from the banner at the top of our email, we have a super-chill Discord channel where you can talk about anything nerdish, promote your stuff and even get involved in play-tests of my games (often run by me!). I'd love to see you there, so join the server, get involved in the conversation, or lurk. You do you!

That's all for now. Have a great hump day, and I'll be in touch soon!

Project Update: Thank you for being an amazing community!

Hey there,

That's a wrap!

I want to thank you for your support with Punk is Dead and give you a couple of pieces of great news:

1. I sneakily brought the Hip Hop Stretch Goal down to 72k, meaning we hit it. Everyone gets three new roles to play!

2. In March, I will send out a free PDF of a silly little game called PENNY ORCADE to every backer.

You are a wonderful community, and I can't stress how important your backing is to the survival of independent businesses like my own.

I'm away to get an early night now as I have a 23-hour journey from the South West of England to Louisville, Kentucky, tomorrow morning. However, once the dust has settled, I will return with more news on the campaign and what to expect next.

Once again thank you!

Project Update: The final 24 hours for Punk is Dead! Important Info.

Hey there,

This is it. We are on the cusp of the final 24 hours for the Punk is Dead campaign, and what a journey it has been!

At the time of crafting this update, I'm preparing for another long journey to Louisville, Kentucky. This Friday, Sarah and I will head off to attend GAMA, one of the most significant tabletop gaming events in the industry calendar.

Before that, I have a few things to say as we bring this wonderful campaign to an end.

Firstly, thank you to everyone who has backed, shared and just stayed with me through many updates. You have been such a great community, and I loved reading your comments. It doesn't have to stop when the campaign ends. Please keep the discussions alive, as I will be hopping in there with my two-pence regularly.

I'm thrilled to announce that we hit 65k, which means there will be a web app (Distortion) for one-click creation of characters, quick-run scenarios and bad guys. I'm not sure we will hit any more stretch goals, but I have pencilled in, and we don't make for future expansions.

Now, onto what comes next. I will go through this in more detail in a post-campaign update, so if you are suffering from update fatigue, feel free to skip this list.

  • I'll be on a live stream to see the end of the campaign tomorrow at 5:45 pm GMT. Backerkit will send an email out around an hour prior to the stream starting. You can watch through the campaign page or over at https://www.twitch.tv/critical_kit

  • There will likely be radio/update silence from me until around the 10th of March as I will be away in the states. If you want to keep up to date on that little adventure, please follow me on https://www.instagram.com/critikituk or https://www.facebook.com/critkituk

  • At some point in the next week, the URL www.punkisdead.uk will be redirected to a late plegde/preorder page.

  • Around March 14th, the backer surveys will open which will allow you to pick up any more items you missed out on as well as provide any shipping information. These surveys will remain open until April 25th so you can hop in and update info whenever you wish. We will provide contact information in a future email in case you need to change delivery information after this date.

  • Between March 14th and April 25th we will doing the hard work of proofreading, more playtesting and begining production of any items that are not the book. On or around the 25th of April we will send the book to print. During this period we will ensure you are kept up to date with progress as well as give you ample warning of any issues that occur.

  • Around May 1st, your card will be charged for shipping. All of the rates are at the bottom of the campaign page, but we will send out a reminder of them in a future email.

  • Sometime in June, we expect fulfilment to begin with a view to being completely fulfilled by the end of the month. During this month you will receive a communication with your tracking number.

And that's it!

Once again, thank you so much for making this such an enjoyable and lively campaign.

Project Update: Preview of the amazing Band Manager Screen.

Heya,

Today, we received the prototypes of the Band Manager Screen, and I'm thrilled to be able to share some images of them with you.

This screen provides a handy way for the band manager who runs the game to keep their notes, and some of their dice roll out of view of the players - think of it as an anti-spoiler shield.

Below are the prototypes for our screen, followed by some more details about their design and production.

The front and back of the BM Screen

Firstly, the screen is an actual 7-inch vinyl record gatefold. It is manufactured and printed in the United Kingdom by Cram Distribution. We chose Cram because they also press records and create tapes, and we knew they would give us an authentic product.

The printing uses Pantone colours used on the Sex Pistols album, Never Mind the Bollocks. These high-contrast colours make the design pop and easy to read.

The player-facing side portrays two Fender amps. I chose this design to represent the world being transmitted to the players by the BM. There is also a parental warning sticker, so the BM can use as many rude words as they wish.

The BM-facing side has some handy references, including skills, skill checks and ruckus rules (combat). There is also space to pin some of your own rules. I'm currently working on a slide-out faux-vinyl section that will allow you to extend the screen and add more of your references for running the game.

Finally, the BM is manufactured on 350gsm card stock and comes with a rigid clear plastic sleeve to make it durable, even for the travelling gamer.

This is the first physical item I can show you that draws on the attention to detail I have put into this project. I hope you like it!

Hasta la proxima,

Project Update: Have your say: Help us shape the "End of Times' rules!

TLDR: There's a poll I'd like you to vote in at the and of this update.

Heya,

I'm back sooner than I promised because I need help with my game ;)

At a recent convention, I spent an evening with the boys from Parable Games. We were discussing the mechanics of The Encroaching Doom in Mörk Borg, and I made the blasphemous suggestion that you might be able to slow the clock down or even pull it back a bit through the hope your music spreads.

In case you don't know what this mechanic is in Mörk Borg, here's a brief rundown of how I have transferred it to Punk is Dead:

  • The world IS going to end.
  • Each day you roll an "End of Times "die.
  • On a result of 1, a new misery occurs.
  • There are seven apocalytc events revealed by Pirate Radio broadcasts.
  • The BM weaves these events into the game.
  • The seventh event is always the death of the world.

If you are familiar with Mörk Borg, none of this will be new to you. However, one concept I wanted to introduce was the ability to pull back the clock as more people hear your music. Can gigs and demo tapes save the world?

I've created a poll for this which is linked to this update and I'd love to get your opinion as well as any other thoughts you have in the comments for this update.

Sling your two-penneth in.

Is there any chance of the hip hop stretch goals being released possibly as a separate thing or in a zine if we don't hit 75k? As someone who isn't crazy about punk, I was obsessed when I thought I could create and play as doomsday rage against the machine or plunderphonic DJs.

Project Update: Last few days: Can we hit the Distortion Stretch Goal for everyone?

Heya,

We have less than five days remaining on the campaign, so it's time to offer up just one more stretch goal to see if we can push further.

Today, I'm setting a target of 65k for the release of Distortion, a web tool that will make it easy to generate Band Members, Gigs (scenarios), and Nasty Bastards. If you are familiar with SCVMBIRTHER, you will know what this kind of thing looks like. If not, take a quick look at it to get an idea of what we can unlock.

It's a great way to get a game of Punk is Dead underway in minutes for both BMs and players.

Here's an initial concept of what our Distortion web app will look like:

Pink, black and yellow all the way down!

If you are interested in the nerdy stuff, here ya go:

  • It will be created with responsive HTML so it works on desktop and mobile.
  • It will use a node.js backend and a reactive front end.
  • It will be accessible for screenreaders and comply to as much of the WCAG as possible.

Can you help us do this?

If you have already backed, thank you! You can still share it with other people you think may like it.

If you haven't backed it, CRACK ON!

If you can't afford to back it right now, please still share it with other people!

It's the community that help bring these games to the world (the banks aren't interested in helping us indie creators out). I cannot stress how grateful we are for every tiny bit of help you give us.

That's all for this one, but I'll be back mid-week with another quick update before we hit the final day.

Hasta la proxima!

if we don't hit the goal and miss out on the three 3 roles I hope Tim will reveal the general idea of the roles so we can homebrew them. especially Breaker, the idea of break-dancing fascist pricks to death in the apocalypse sounds rad.

Project Update: This guy might put you in a bad mood (this email contains rude words).

Heya,

I can't believe we've almost made it to 55k!  THANK YOU!

Tomorrow, I will add a 65k stretch goal for the last push. If we meet that one, we will create a web app that generates characters, found items, venues and more.

But before we get to that, there's someone I want you to meet:

YOU READ IT WRONG!

Yep, he's a real-life Batstard. A miserable flying creature who will try to suck your blood unless you kill him. He's just one of the many creatures that will appear in the deftly titled A Collection of Fascist Pricks & Other Nasty Bastards Who Need a Good Ass Kicking.

If you already play Mörk Borg, feel free to insert him into one of your games. Otherwise, if you have backed the campaign, he will feature in the core rulebook, and you will be able to kick his ass (and several of his buddies) with guitars, drumsticks or whatever else you have to hand in the included scenario LONDON CALLING.

That's enough bad dude action for one evening. I'll leave you to get on with your weekend without any more villainous vibes.

Have a good one!
