Project Update: Project Update - October 2025
Hello everyone! Hope you all been having a lovely 2026! I can't believe we're so close to November already!
Progress
I've gotten more pages completed and made a test print over the summer to see how they're looking. Though I see a few colors that are darker and will need adjusting in the final, overall I think it's shaping up well!

Timeline
As a refresher from my last update, this was a campaign I ran in 2024 to remaster the art and story in my first two Sombulus books and reprint them together in one book. Right when I ran this campaign, I got a much-needed (but intense) job and knew that the timeframe I originally planned wasn't going to work. I made a few changes to my process over the last year to course-correct:
As a refresher from my last update, this was a campaign I ran in 2024 to remaster the art and story in my first two Sombulus books and reprint them together in one book. Right when I ran this campaign, I got a much-needed (but intense) job and knew that the timeframe I originally planned wasn't going to work. I made a few changes to my process over the last year to course-correct:
- Hiring outside art help: Big thanks to Kristina Stipetic and Krispy, two amazing webcomic creators who have helped with colors, flats, and moral support in making these pages. Kristina is running a campaign on Kickstarter for her new experimental sci-fi comic The Flesh of the World through November 3, so please give it a look if you enjoy gorgeous layouts and surreal atmospheric stories.
- Reducing my current comic update schedule to one page a week instead of two: In addition to this print version, Sombulus is an ongoing webcomic that usually updates twice weekly. I have cut the release time down to one page a week instead to use that extra time for this work.
While these changes did help some, unfortunately we're still a good 50% of the way to go on page edits for Book 1, after which I can start the Book 2 edits. Another year at my current pace is still going to fall short of a 2027 release, so here are my adjusted plans:
- I will be stopping current updates in November for the current pages of Sombulus to be able to focus all of my comic-making time on the pages for this book. While I don't want to do this indefinitely, I am hoping a pause until March or April will be enough time to make stronger progress, while not entirely leaving you folks who have been following on the website by the wayside.
- I will work with the Backerkit staff to refund anyone who needs it. I respect your time and patience, and I completely understand if a longer wait isn't practical for you. The money raised from this campaign is siloed in a different account and will continue to remain untouched for as long as necessary, so please reach out if this is the option you'd like to pursue.
- If things aren't looking significantly more solid in another year, I'll cancel the campaign and make these books at a future time. While I'd obviously be disappointed to do this, it's not fair to you all as backers drag things on for an indefinite number of years.
Thanks so much for your support and understanding as I do my best to find a workable solution to make these book happen. I'll be trying to be more regular with my updates as we head into 2027 as well. Take care everyone!
