PROJECT UPDATE
Project Update: Important Update: Cancelling the Campaign
Hi all
So, unfortunately, we've decided to cancel Dreams & Dread in the Vale of Ur.
Before I delve into why, I just want to give a huge thank you to all our backers. It means so much to us that you showed up for us and decided to give your support. Even more than the money and time we're losing by cancelling, it hurts to disappoint you, the people who cheered for us and trusted in us. Thank you.
Why We Are Cancelling
So why do we have cancel when we've beat our funding goal? As you may know, funding goals are rarely realistic as creators are encouraged to set them low, because backers are attracted to campaigns that are funded quickly.
In truth, we'd need to double the current funding for Dreams & Dread to break even, with everything that goes into making a great book. Though the initial surge looked great and we were genuinely happy to raise about $20,000 in the first 48 hours, we've not been able to do much since – newsletters, updates, social media, paid ads, nothing has really worked.
I don't know if that's because of the platform we're on, the state of the TTRPG industry, wider world events, the economy, the project itself, or how we've marketed it. Probably a combination.
In any event, it became clear to us early this week that there wasn't a path to gain the funding we'd need, and while it's agonizing to do so, we've decided to shutter the project and cut our losses. In better times, we might've seen it through and hoped to make up for it with post-campaign sales, but the bitter truth is that we just aren't in an economic position to do so.
So, what happens next?
First and foremost, Dreams & Dread isn't dead. We'll be going over what went wrong, what we could've done better, and maybe wait for a better timing, but we hope to bring this project back in some form or another. We owe that to ourselves – we've poured a lot of love and energy into it already – but also to everyone who was excited by it, as well as the talented artists (especially Daniel Caballero who made the beautiful cover) involved with the project.
When the project is officially cancelled – Backerkit admin has to do that, so it'll probably be later today – your pledges will be dropped automatically and everyone who's paid for reservations will be refunded.
I understand if you feel sad, angry, or disappointed, but trust me when I tell you: we wouldn't cancel the project unless we had to. We're losing thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours, and above all, we were so excited to share this with you. It's not a decision we're making lightly. It's what we have to do. Know that whatever feelings you have about it, we probably have them too.
On that note, if you're still itching for some great TTRPG products and want to support a third party creator, please visit eventyrgames.store – we have a wide range of awesome 5E titles that might tickle your fancy, and we could definitely use a bit of love right now.
Again, thank you so much for your support. Whatever went wrong, it certainly wasn't your fault – you were here, supporting us, and we won't ever forget that. Thank you.
Until next time,
J. A. Valeur

PROJECT UPDATE
Project Update: Give us your nightmare monster and win a Dream Box!
We're excited to be closing on our firs stretch goal at $25,000! To thank you for making our dreams come true, we want to bring your nightmares to life!
If you've backed Dreams & Dread (or if you hurry up and pledge now!), we want your idea for a unique monster to unleash in the Vale of Ur. It can be a surreal jungle monstrosity, a deceptively cute companion, or a primordial beast that stalked your childhood nightmares.
Don't worry about the mechanics! Just give us the concept, lore, or aesthetic, and we will handle forging it into a fully balanced 5E stat block – and get an awesome full-color illustration commissioned for it!
Submit your idea in the comments below or by filling out this form. Monday 20th, we'll select our top 3 favorites and let you – our backers – vote on the ultimate winner!
If your monster wins, you'll get your credit in the book and your pledge will automatically be upgraded to a Dream Box completely for free!
We cannot wait to see what terrors you dream up. Thank you so much for your incredible support!
