Project Update: Demons, and Coffee, and Coffins

Wishing you a delightfully demonic Thursday!

Have your dreams and visions been haunted with hezrous? Has a balor taken up residence in your basement? Have you found a cerebrux in your morning cereal? Then this is the update for you...

Monsters!

A hefty chunk of the Demonic Grimoire is devoted to the bestiary, bringing 60+ new monsters into OSE. We thought it'd be fun to showcase the full list of monsters and discuss a bit about their origins.

First up, behold the main monsters index pages, featuring amazing demon horde art by Frank Scacalossi!

Let's Break it Down...

There are 5 kinds of monsters in the Monsters Index on the left-hand page above:
  • Demon lords. 8 lords of hell, each exemplifying a particular niche of destruction, control, and evil. The image at the end of this update showcases them all. A few of them (specifically Infernus, Ooyxblix, and Sillith) occupy similar niches to an AD&D arch-devil or demon prince (tyranny, slime, and spiders, respectively).
  • Demons. 22 lesser demons (below 6 HD) and 26 greater demons (6 HD and above). Just over half of these are derived from or inspired by AD&D, and the other half are new monstrosities.
  • Non-demon hell realm denizens. There's a handful of monsters native to various realms of hell but not classified as demons. (The grasping, icy Death Cloud—found in Zonth—is a good example of this category.)
  • People. Cultists and tieflings.
  • Normal animals. Lesser demons that can be bound as familiars all have the ability to shape-change into one or more animal forms. Some can turn into basic stuff like rats or bats (see OSE for those stat blocks), but others can take the form of more unusual animals like monkeys, ravens, or weasels. So one of the Demonic Grimoire's appendices provides stat blocks for these new kinds of normal animals.

Monsters by Demon Lord

On the right-hand page, you can see a second index listing monsters according to the demon lord they serve. This index is a great reference for planning thematic adventures involving the minions of a particular demon lord.
