Project Update: Meet the Aerialist (A Fighter Subclass)
Heya Folks! Chris Lindsay here...
I just wanted to remind you that if you want all the bells and whistles and feathers and flutters, it's time to hop on that train and back this project. You've unlocked one stretch goal, a GINORMOUS PTERODACTYL opponent for our external bestiary and we're quickly approaching the FLYING MEGALODON. Keep that train rolling!!!
...and now it's time for a PREVIEW!
Hey Everybody! Chris Lindsay here to take you on a tour of all the new HOTNESS!!!
I’m a huge fan of cinematic play! It’s quite possible you’re going to hear me (or read words I’ve written) that say this very thing over and over again. Films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or even the entire Matrix series make us all long to play a flashy warrior that can quite literally dance on the air while doing battle with the forces of evil. Well, the Aerialist subclass delivers on this cinematic archetype in spades. Jump, drift, and levitate through the air with mesmerizing swordplay, or simply step up and away from harm as you notch an arrow. Never stand still and when all else fails, go UP!!!
With that in mind, here is a preview of the Aerialist subclass from Dragon Rider's Primer. Remember that you can download the beta rules right now!! We'd encourage you to start playing the beta rules and remember to send us feedback via the link in the PDF! In the meantime, check out this awesome new subclass: The Aerialist!
Fighters can master many different fighting styles and weapons, and the wise warrior expects practically anything from an opponent, from the bare-knuckled brawler to the heavily armored knight. However, the opponent who rises into the air and attacks from above is something very few combatants are prepared for. Aerialists know the benefits of attacking from the air. Whether they are moving under their own power, or have mounted a flying creature, they’re masters of fighting in three-dimensional space.

Level 3: Aerial Expert
You are at your best when your feet are not planted firmly on the ground. When you are attacking from at least five feet above a solid surface (ground, water, etc.), your weapon attacks and Unarmed Strikes deal an extra 1d6 damage.
Additionally, you gain the ability to cast the Jump and Feather Fall spells (self only). You can do this in any combination, a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus. You regain all uses of this ability when you finish a Long Rest.
Level 7: Nimble Aerialist
You gain the ability to cast the Levitate spell (self only). You can do this a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus. You do not need to concentrate to maintain this spell. You regain all uses of this ability when you finish a Long Rest.
While levitating you can use a Bonus Action to move yourself horizontally up to your Speed.
Level 10: Dueling Flier
While you are at least five feet above a solid surface (ground, water, etc.) and your movement allows an enemy to take an Opportunity Attack, you can use your Reaction to make a weapon attack or Unarmed Strike with Advantage against that enemy.
Additionally, the extra damage done by your Aerial Expert feature increases to 2d6.
Level 15: Improved Aerial Expert
When you are attacking from at least five feet above a solid surface (ground, water, etc.), the extra damage done by your Aerial Expert feature increases to 3d6.
Level 18: Aerial Master
While you are at least five feet above a solid surface (ground, water, etc.), attacks against you or a flying mount you’re riding, are made with Disadvantage. If a creature misses you with an attack within your reach, you can use your Reaction to make a weapon attack or Unarmed Strike with Advantage against that creature.
