Every game begins with the same destination and a different problem. The 14 Masters are shuffled into a new Path, so familiar abilities create a fresh puzzle each time. The challenge is not simply to move the Apprentice forward, but to understand how one choice will reshape the entire line once the round is over.

That is why the Fake Masters are more than obstacles. They act after you, in numerical order, and their effects can undo a careless plan, or become exactly what you needed. The game clicks when you deliberately set up an apparently bad effect to help complete your route and leave the Apprentice beside the Deity.

Edit

Plan the whole round, not just your move.
Your activation is only the beginning. The Fake Masters then act in a fixed order, so strong play comes from anticipating where the entire Path will end up.

Turn Fake Masters into part of the solution.
Their effects can disrupt your plan, but they can also create the movement or positioning your own turn cannot. Learning when to use them is one of the game's most satisfying discoveries.

A fresh Path every time you shuffle.
The same 14 Masters begin in a different order each game, changing how their effects interact and giving you a new problem to unravel.

An exact finish that makes every move matter.
You do not win simply by moving toward the Deity. The Apprentice must finish exactly beside it after the Fake Masters have taken their turn, so the final state of the Path is what matters.

FORM THE PATH

Shuffle the 14 Master cards and place them in a single line from left to right. Put the Apprentice at the beginning of the Path and the Deity at the end.

That shuffled order becomes your puzzle for the game. Before making a move, look across the Path and start noticing which Masters might open a route for the Apprentice.

CHOOSE A TRUE MASTER

On your turn, activate any True Master still in the Path and resolve one of its available effects. If that Master gives you more than one option, choose the effect that best serves your plan.

Effects can move, swap, send, or remove cards, so advancing the Apprentice is only part of the job. Often, the better move is the one that prepares the Path for everything that will happen next.

FAKE MASTERS TAKE THEIR TURN

After your turn, every Fake Master still in the Path activates, from the lowest number to the highest. Resolve the top effect when possible; if it cannot be resolved, use the alternative effect below it.

This is where careful plans are tested. A Fake Master can undo your setup, but its effect can also solve a problem for you, if you have prepared the Path to make that happen.

CONNECT WITH THE DEITY

Begin another round and keep reshaping the Path until the Apprentice finishes immediately to the Deity's left after the Fake Masters have completed their turn. If the Path ends that way, the Apprentice completes the journey and becomes a priest.

The final position must be exact. If the Apprentice is removed from the game, or if there is no True Master you can activate, the journey ends in defeat.
