The First English Release of the Oldest and Most Popular Japanese RPG is Coming to Crowdfunding.
Sword World is Japanβs most iconic tabletop RPG - played by generations of fantasy fans and featured across anime, novels, and pop culture. For the first time, we're bringing an official, full-English release to the West. This crowdfunding campaign will fund the complete localization, design, and printing of the Sword World 2.5 Core Rulebook.
To ensure the highest quality translation possible, we are working closely with Sword World's original Japanese creators at Group SNE. With careful translation of cultural elements and game terms, guidance from the original developers, and collaboration with Japanese translation and TTRPG experts, this localization aims to set a new gold standard. We are putting in the time and effort to get every detail right so you can enjoy playing Sword World the way it was always meant to be.
The popularity of Record of Lodoss War is what encouraged Group SNE to make their own game system based in and around the series, that game system being the original Sword World RPG. Record of Lodoss War has been entered into the Tabletop Gaming Hall of Fame as the creator of the Replay genre for books, shows, and other media. Based on an RPG campaign playthrough, the Lodoss War novels inspired more books, anime, and games. Their legacy has led to the Critical Role Actual Play, their Vox Machina and Mighty Nein shows, and more.
Sword World is not a new TTRPG - it's one of the oldest. Its rules have been refined for decades. Sword World uses a fast, intuitive 2d6 system: easy to learn, but rich in storytelling and tactics. The simplified combat system feels like classic JRPGs, and its side-based combat skips the grid for smooth, cinematic battles that stay focused on the action. Looking for more depth? Use the advanced combat system for more tactical depth when you want it.
The open multiclass system lets you spend experience to grow in any role - mix magic, swordplay, and more to play a character that grows as you do. No rigid classes, just evolving heroes.
With a world built around adventurers' guilds, quests, and dungeons created by swords and magitec, every session feels like an episodic anime arc - complete quests, build your legend, and come back for more.

π How to Pledge for Sword World: New Backer Guide + Plushie Reveal!
Can't believe I'm saying this, but we launch in just 2 days! This has been such a whirlwind, and I am so glad we are finally about to go live! There is going to be a lot of info going out on Tuesday, so I wanted to make sure anyone who hasn't done crowdfunds before gets a quick primer on what it's going to be like:
First, what actually is crowdfunding?
Crowdfunding is all about raising money for a project by asking for contributions from a group of people who are interested in that project. It means asking your community, friends, fans, and supporters to help fund your project by pitching in whatever they can. In return, backers often get exclusive incentives that aren't offered anywhere else ever again.
Itβs a way to bring creative projects like Sword World to life through collective support rather than relying on big investors who often take some of the creative freedom out of it.
So, how do you pledge? Here's a breakdown:
1) Create an Account
Create an account to pledge and join the crowdfunding community! I recommend doing this before we launch at 10am on Tuesday to avoid any hiccups. Doing so helps you stay up to date with campaign updates and will allow you to participate in other interactive posts such as polls (like the one in this Update), discussions, and achievements. 2) Select a Pledge Level
Choose the pledge that best fits your wants and budget! Some pledges offer discounts when items are bundled together. 3) Include Add-ons
Do you want more Sword World goodies that aren't included in your bundle? Check out the add-ons! After you select your pledge, add-ons will allow you to further customize your rewards and get additional items. 4) Check out
Once you check out, you can sit back and watch the campaign grow! You'll want to check back in for any stretch goal unlocks, campaign updates, interactive polls, etc. As the campaign and community continues to grow, so will your rewards as a backer. Once the campaign is over, keep a close eye on your email for the incoming survey. 5) Manage Your Pledge
After the campaign ends a survey will be sent to your email (this can take some time - we aim for a few weeks after the campaign, but sometimes it can take longer). You'll be notified via email about the survey. Through the survey you will be able to lock in the exact tier and add-ons you want!
As a reminder, you will not be charged for your pledge, add-ons, or shipping until after the campaign! If you want to add more or remove something from your order, you will be able to do so via BackerKit until orders are locked.

With the launch only a few days away, we figure itβs time to help coordinate some Sword World play on the Discord server. Weβve got a new category for organized play in the Discord server, so go check it out! Hereβs how it works:
A DM will submit a game request in on the server.
Games are submitted by Thursday at 5pm EST. Mods will review the game submissions, request a fix, or approve the game.
Once approved, games will be posted on the quest-board on Friday the same week.
When a game is posted, a thread is made! Players will use that thread to ask the GM questions, sign up to play, and coordinate before the game.
On game day, the GM will click 'Game Hub' to create their voice channel room, and players can join in! Please keep in mind the game room will disappear once you leave, so feel free to continue using your game thread during and after the game.
In the time leading up to launch day, weβll be posting new games as soon as we can. After that point, weβll move to the weekly schedule outlined above! For now, please just give me a minimum of 24 hours to review your game before it gets posted.

Sword World Slip Case Reveal
Below is a mock up of what the Slip Case for Sword World will look like! There is so much we love about this - most of all how well it matches with the books inside. If you've seen the teaser for the standard edition box set, you'll notice that the top of the slipcase matches the very short reveal we showed of the box.
We also wanted to reveal the DM screen today, but we are having some internal debates about which art to use for it. We thought, why not bring the debate to you! Anything and everything is still subject to change before the campaign, so it's possible something entirely new gets used. But if not, let us know: Which of these two options do you prefer for the DM screen? On the one hand, Shun's art which is also on the slip case looks sooooo good matched up. Plus, it's a little more of a generic look that would go with every campaign played. On the other hand, the Harves City screen brings a whole new piece of art to the table. Who is Group SNE?
Group SNE was founded in 1987 by the current president Hitoshi Yasuda. Group SNE is known for a lot of things beyond role-playing games, including light novels, board games and card games.
Group SNE is the original Japanese creator of Sword World, and we are working suuuuuper closely with them to ensure the best translation possible. We want this project to set a new gold standard. That's why we are putting in so much time and effort - we want every detail to be right for the best and closest to the original experience possible.

Now that you've been primed about Group SNE and why we're working so closely with them, I wanted to share some very cool news. Ai is flying out to Japan just before the Sword World RPG campaign launches. She will be meeting with Group SNE, and wrangled them into doing a livestream with her.
It will be with Kei Kitazawa (the principal creator/author behind Sword World 2.5 and Sword World 2.0 rulebooks, supplements, replays, and short story collections of Sword World) and Hitoshi Yasuda (Founder & President of Group SNE).
Long time livestream viewers are probably used to being able to ask questions directly in/during the stream, but we'll have to handle this one a little bit differently since there's obviously going to be some translating involved:
