The Road to the Glitter Boy Codex Unearths Old Legends

The Road to the Glitter Boy Codex Unearths Old Legends

Some Glitter Boy legends are born in a single battle. Others take generations.

This week, the road to the Rifts® Glitter Boy Codex takes us north, toward Free Quebec and The Old Guard — veteran pilots, wandering warriors, and families who have carried the traditions of the Glitter Boy from one generation to the next.

Their machines have fought countless battles. Their pilots carry stories learned from those who came before them. And after enough years, history has a way of becoming something else.

Legend.

The Old Guard Insignia - Art by Steven Cummings

The Old Guard

“Our suits walk abroad, but our roots are at home.”

The Old Guard traces its heritage to veterans of Free Quebec's Glitter Boy Legions who continued piloting their magnificent war machines after leaving military service.

Over time, their Glitter Boys were passed to children, apprentices, and worthy successors. What began with veterans became a tradition spanning generations.

For the Old Guard, piloting a Glitter Boy is more than possessing one of the most powerful suits of armor on Rifts Earth. It is heritage and duty.

They prize discipline, service, loyalty, and lineage. Some remain close to Free Quebec, while others wander far from home, but wherever they travel, they carry those traditions with them.

And among all the Glitter Boys associated with the Old Guard, few carry a legend quite like Le Pisteur.

Le Pisteur — The Hunter

Not every Glitter Boy legend begins with the thunder of a Boom Gun. Some begin much more quietly — with an enemy patrol that disappears, a warband walking directly into a trap, or a commander receiving the wrong information at exactly the wrong moment.

And somewhere out there... a Glitter Boy is watching.

Le Pisteur - In Progress - Art and Inks by Steven Cummings - Colors by Mike Majestic

Le Pisteur is the most storied Glitter Boy of the Old Guard, passed through the Lapointe family for generations.

Unlike the image of a Glitter Boy standing defiantly on the battlefield and unleashing the devastating power of its Boom Gun, Le Pisteur has built its reputation through patience, reconnaissance, deception, confusion, and striking only when the advantage is its own.

It is an unusual Glitter Boy with secrets dating back to before the Great Cataclysm.

Exactly what makes Le Pisteur different?

That is one secret we're saving for the Rifts® Glitter Boy Codex.

When History Becomes Folklore

The Old Guard remembers its history, but not every story passed from Glitter Boy to Glitter Boy can be found in an official record.

Some are told around campfires or whispered between veteran pilots, repeated for so many years that nobody remembers exactly where the truth ends and the legend begins. They tell of impossible battles, strange sightings, and warriors who should not have survived.

And then there are the whispers of something called...

Every Suit Has a Story

The Rifts® Glitter Boy Codex isn't simply about the specifications of the legendary USA-G10. It's about everything that has grown around this incredible machine — its pilots and families, competing beliefs and traditions, legendary suits, and generations of stories.

From the Brotherhood and the Chromium Codex to the Minutemen, Riggers, Boomers, and now The Old Guard, each week we've opened another piece of the Glitter Boy's history.

And there are still more secrets waiting inside the Codex.

The Road to the Glitter Boy Codex Takes a Darker Turn
Cover art by Kevin Long, colors by Mike Majestic.

The Road to the Glitter Boy Codex Takes a Darker Turn.

Not every Glitter Boy legend is a hero.

Not every pilot sees the legendary USA-G10 as a sacred relic, and not every chapter believes its incredible power comes with a duty to protect others. For some, the Glitter Boy is something else entirely – a weapon, a way of life, and a symbol of strength earned on the battlefield.

This week we leave the workshops of the Riggers behind and ride with the Boomers – warriors with a very different relationship with the legendary Chrome war machine. And among their ranks waits one of the strangest and most disturbing Glitter Boys ever to walk Rifts Earth: The Cannibal.

And if that wasn't dangerous enough, something else has returned.

The Mechanoids are coming.

The Boomers Insignia - Art by Steven Cummings

The Boomers

There is nothing subtle about a Boom Gun.

Its thunder announces itself across the battlefield. Its impact can turn the tide of a fight in an instant. And for some Glitter Boy pilots, that raw power is exactly the point.

The Boomers represent a louder, rougher, and more dangerous edge of the Glitter Boy legacy.

These are pilots who embrace the awesome destructive power of the USA-G10 and the reputation that comes with piloting one. They are warriors and survivors who understand that when a Glitter Boy walks onto the battlefield, people notice.

And some Boomers make sure they are never forgotten.

In Progress - Art and Inks by Steven Cummings - Colors by Mike Majestic

Where the Minutemen may see a responsibility to protect and the Riggers see a machine to maintain, rebuild, and improve, the Boomers remind us that putting incredible power into human hands does not guarantee what those hands will choose to do with it.

Because not every Glitter Boy story is heroic.

Some become legends for very different reasons.

And few have earned a darker reputation than...

The Cannibal

The Cannibal - Art & Inks by Steven Cummings - Colors by Mike Majestic

Even among Glitter Boy pilots, The Cannibal is a name spoken with a mixture of dread and fascination.

This infamous Boomer Glitter Boy has passed through the hands of exceptionally skilled pilots and earned a reputation for being incredibly difficult to put down. But that alone is not what gave the machine its name. The Cannibal is infamous for something much more disturbing:

It consumes other war machines.

Get close enough to The Cannibal and the battle can become something altogether different. Armor, machinery, and M.D.C. metal can become more than wreckage left behind on the battlefield.

They can become food.

And somehow, this ancient Glitter Boy keeps going.

Its pilots come and go.

The machine survives.

Some say there is something inside. Something trapped within the machine. Something that may explain its unnatural ability to survive punishment that should cripple another Glitter Boy. Are the stories true?

For now, we’ll let you wonder.

The Darker Side of the Legend

The Cannibal represents another side of what we want to explore in the Rifts® Glitter Boy Codex.

The Glitter Boy has survived for centuries on Rifts Earth, and over that time these machines have become much more than suits of power armor.

They have become heirlooms, symbols, weapons, obsession, and legends.

Some inspire hope.
Some inspire awe.
And some inspire fear.

The Codex explores that full spectrum through the factions, pilots, personalities, legendary suits, history, weapons, gear, modifications, ready to play adventures, and mysteries that have grown around one of the most iconic war machines in the Palladium Megaverse.

And with the Rifts® Glitter Boy Codex launching October 20, we still have more Chrome to reveal.

And Speaking of Legends From Palladium’s Past...

Last week, we revealed something else coming as part of the Rifts® Glitter Boy Codex crowdfunder.

And judging by the response, a lot of you are as excited as we are.

The Mechanoids® Redux Edition!

Before The Terminator. Before The Matrix. Before Rifts, Phase World, or Aliens Unlimited. There was The Mechanoids.

The Mechanoids® Redux Edition: The Complete RPG Collection is coming as part of the Rifts® Glitter Boy Codex crowdfunder and commemorates Palladium’s 45th Anniversary!

This massive 320+ page deluxe, full-color hardcover brings together decades of Mechanoids® history, including:

  • The Mechanoid Invasion® (1981)
  • The Journey (1982)
  • Homeworld (1983)
  • The new generation of Mechanoids from Rifts® Sourcebook Two: The Mechanoids® (1992)
  • And the long-forgotten The Mechanoids® RPG (1985), with over 100 pages of additional source material, artwork, characters, vehicles, weapons, gear, and more – out of print for over 35 years, most fans didn't even know all this extra content even existed!

Sean Owen Roberson has called the 1985 Mechanoids® RPG a “lost and forgotten gem,” and The Mechanoids themselves a dark science-fiction setting and cast of characters that were ahead of their time.

Now Kevin and Sean are going back to the beginning to collect and remaster it all in one big Redux Edition with new layout, content updates, modernized Redux rules, and full-color artwork.

The Mechanoids® Redux Edition Highlights:

  • Written by Kevin Siembieda, with an adventure series by Erick Wujcik.
  • Redux design, layout, and updates by Sean Owen Roberson.
  • Rules Upgrade. The original Mechanoids, Palladium’s first RPG, was a rough prototype of what was to come. Now the popular Redux edition rules upgrade the Mechanoids experience to the classic Palladium Megaversal RPG system – revised and clarified for modern sensibilities.
  • Expanded vehicle combat rules, including the comprehensive Redux rules for land, sea, and aerospace combat (first featured in TMNT Transdimensional Adventures).
  • Artwork remastered for modern printing, scanned from the original production boards, this is a huge visual upgrade over what was possible in the early 1980s.
  • Approximately 80% of the artwork is by Kevin Siembieda, including material many fans have never seen from the 1985 RPG and additional never-before-seen artwork Kevin created back in the day.
  • Additional artwork by William Messner-Loebs, Newton Ewell, Kevin Long, Mike Gustovich, and James A. Osten.
  • And for the first time, this classic artwork is being brought to life in color by Luis Antonio Delgado, renowned colorist of the New York Times bestselling graphic novel The Last Ronin, among many other books.
  • 320+ pages. Deluxe hardcover. Full color.

Another dream project for Kevin and Sean – and another piece of Palladium history coming to the Rifts® Glitter Boy Codex crowdfunder.

October 20 Is Getting Closer

The Boomers.

The Cannibal.

The Mechanoids® Redux Edition.

And we still have more to reveal.

The Rifts® Glitter Boy Codex launches Tuesday, October 20 on BackerKit, and you can reserve your place right now.

Each Rifts Surprise Bundle will be hand-curated by the Palladium team with Rifts goodies and surprises.

The Road to the Glitter Boy Codex Takes Shape
Cover art by Kevin Long, colors by Mike Majestic.

The Road to the Glitter Boy Codex Takes Shape.

This week, we get under the plating.

A Glitter Boy may be one of the most powerful and recognizable war machines on Rifts Earth, but even a legend needs someone who knows how to keep it walking. Armor gets blasted apart. Systems fail. Ammunition runs dry. Replacement parts can be impossible to find. And sometimes, surviving the next battle means doing something the original designers never imagined.

That is where The Riggers come in.

The Riggers Insignia - Art by Steven Cummings

The Riggers

The Riggers are the builders, fixers, salvagers, Operators, pilots, and chrome-obsessed tinkerers of the Glitter Boy Brotherhood. Where others may see the USA-G10 as a nearly sacred piece of Golden Age technology, a Rigger also sees a machine that has to survive in the real world. They repair what is broken, replace what cannot be repaired, improvise when the proper parts no longer exist, and find ways to keep battered suits fighting long after another pilot might have abandoned them.

For the Riggers, knowing how to fire the Boom Gun is only part of understanding a Glitter Boy. You need to know the machine. How it moves. How it sounds. What breaks. What can be rebuilt. And just how far you can push it before something finally gives. Behind the famous pilots and gleaming suits are Operators, support crews, workshops, spare parts, and generations of accumulated knowledge that outsiders rarely see.

That practical streak gives the Riggers a culture all their own. They understand that keeping a Glitter Boy alive sometimes means ignoring what the machine was and concentrating on what it can become. Replacement armor, salvaged components, unconventional repairs, custom weapons, and field modifications are not signs that a suit has lost its glory. To a Rigger, every patch and replacement part can become another chapter in its history.

The Glitter Boy Brotherhood may have its legends, but the Riggers know those legends do not survive on reputation alone.
Rigger Mechanic - In Progress - Black and White Art by Steven Cummings - Colors by Mike Majestic

Suites of Legend:

Franken-Boy

And perhaps no Glitter Boy wears that philosophy more proudly than Franken-Boy.

Franken-Boy is not the pristine Chrome knight people picture when they hear the words "Glitter Boy". It is scarred, patched, rebuilt, and unmistakably pieced together. Mismatched armor and replacement systems tell the story of a machine that has been damaged, repaired, modified, and sent back into battle again and again. Where another suit might hide its scars beneath polished Chrome, Franken-Boy practically wears them as badges of honor.

Every mismatched plate raises another question. Where did that piece come from? What battle destroyed the original? Who rebuilt it? How many pilots, Operators, battlefields, and desperate repairs have contributed to the machine standing before you now?

That is what makes Franken-Boy such a fitting legend for the Riggers. It represents something at the heart of their philosophy: a Glitter Boy does not have to be pristine to be legendary. Sometimes ingenuity, experience, spare parts, and sheer stubbornness are what keep a legend alive.

The Patriot & U.N.C.L.E. S.A.M.

If Franken-Boy represents the Riggers’ refusal to let a battered Glitter Boy die, The Patriot represents the spirit of innovation that helped create the Riggers themselves.

The Patriot began as a stock USA-G10 recovered from a pre-NEMA United States Army depot, its original American and Army markings deliberately preserved by the Operators who maintained it. During the Dark Age, dwindling replacement parts forced those Operators to improvise with scavenged components and nonstandard systems.

Eventually, necessity became something more.

Innovation became habit.

After The Patriot suffered severe damage in battle, its Operators added a turreted particle-beam weapon above its left shoulder, powered by the salvaged autonomous brain of a pre-Rifts robot. The integration awakened a fiercely patriotic neural intelligence that became The Patriot’s robotic co-pilot – and gave the already unconventional Glitter Boy a personality every bit as loud as its Boom Gun.

Those modifications helped deepen a growing divide with more traditional Minutemen. Other pilots and Operators shared the same willingness to rebuild, modify, and reinvent their machines, helping forge what would eventually become The Riggers.

Today, The Patriot is their most famous Glitter Boy, regarded as one of “The Originals.” Minutemen traditionalists have another name for it:

“The first Franken-boy.”
The Patriot - Black and White Art by Daniel Redus • U.N.C.L.E. S.A.M. - Black and White Art by Steven Cummings

And The Patriot doesn’t travel alone.

U.N.C.L.E. S.A.M. is an intelligent, eagle-shaped reconnaissance robot and companion to The Patriot. Where The Patriot is loud and theatrical, U.N.C.L.E. S.A.M. is quiet and observant – scouting from above, gathering intelligence, and working in concert with the legendary Glitter Boy.

The two artificial intelligences have become an unlikely pair: one built to bring the boom, the other to scout its targets.

Build It. Modify It. Make It Yours.

And this is where the Rifts® Glitter Boy Codex begins opening another part of the toolbox for players and Game Masters. The Codex isn't only exploring the history, factions, personalities, and legends surrounding the USA-G10. It is packed with Glitter Boy suit modifications, new and variant weapons, new gear, pilot options, and other ways to customize the legendary USA-G10 for your character and campaign.

Want a Glitter Boy that has survived decades of battlefield repairs? A suit adapted to the needs of a particular pilot or mission? New equipment? Different weapons? Field modifications born out of necessity?

The Riggers provide a look at what happens when pilots and Operators stop asking what a Glitter Boy was designed to be and start asking what they need it to become.

And this is just a glimpse.

The Riggers, Franken-Boy, The Patriot, and U.N.C.L.E. S.A.M. reveal another side of the Glitter Boy legacy. The Chrome may be iconic, but underneath it are machines maintained by people – people who improvise, rebuild, modify, and sometimes simply refuse to let a battered old warhorse die.

And before we close the workshop doors this week, we have one more piece of Chrome to show you.

The Road to the Glitter Boy Codex Continues...
Cover art by Kevin Long, colors by Mike Majestic.

The Road to the Glitter Boy Codex Continues!

This week we open our first faction spotlight with The Minutemen. Across the wilderness of Rifts Earth, the sight of a Glitter Boy can mean many things, but for countless towns, travelers, and communities on the edge of danger, The Minutemen are the ones who answer the call.

The Minutemen Insignia - Art by Steven Cummings

The Minutemen

The Minutemen are more than warriors in chrome. Their chapters are scattered across North America, independent of any single government or army, but bound together by a shared belief that a Glitter Boy should use its incredible power to protect people who cannot protect themselves. They patrol dangerous roads, answer calls for help, defend isolated settlements, and often become local legends in the communities they serve. Their independence means every chapter has its own personality, but the idea at their heart remains remarkably consistent: when trouble comes, somebody has to stand the line.

For the Minutemen, wearing the Chrome comes with responsibility. Their power is not something to be squandered or used simply for personal glory. A Glitter Boy can change the outcome of a battle, save a community from destruction, or give ordinary people the courage to stand against an enemy they could never face alone. That makes the Minutemen protectors by choice, often putting themselves between innocent people and the dangers of Rifts Earth because they believe that is what someone entrusted with such a powerful machine should do. One may be defending a frontier town, another hunting raiders or monsters, while another patrols the wilderness looking for people in need. Different pilots, different communities, different stories, but all connected by the belief that when the call for help comes, a Minuteman answers.

Hancock: The First Minuteman

And few legends embody that spirit better than Hancock, The First Minuteman. Hancock is not simply another famous Glitter Boy suit. He is a fully sentient Glitter Boy whose origins reach back to the final days of NEMA before the fall of the American Empire in the Great Cataclysm. According to the surviving history, something happened while an Operator was working on the armor, and the machine developed true independent intelligence. Unlike many artificial intelligences that dream of escaping the machines that contain them, Hancock embraces what he is. Being a Glitter Boy is not a prison to him. It is his purpose.

In Progress - Black and White Art by Steven Cummings - Colors by Mike Majestic

For generations, Hancock has served alongside Minutemen pilots as far more than equipment. He acts as co-pilot, mentor, partner, and friend, bringing centuries of experience and an intensely protective personality into every fight. He is patriotic without being blindly obedient, deeply committed to protecting innocent life, and willing to challenge a pilot when pride, politics, or reckless courage threatens to put others in needless danger. Hancock has opinions. He has convictions. And when the Boom Gun speaks, there are two minds standing behind it.

Over time, that relationship has made Hancock something even more extraordinary. He has fought beside generation after generation of Minutemen, remembers the pilots who came before, and carries those experiences forward to the next. He is not regarded merely as property or even simply as an intelligent machine. Hancock is recognized as a Minuteman in his own right. He does not just carry the legacy of the Minutemen, he remembers it.

Hancock is only one of the many legends waiting inside the Rifts Glitter Boy Codex. The Minutemen are part of a much larger Brotherhood filled with remarkable pilots, storied suits, traditions, rivalries, and tales forged across generations of Rifts Earth. Over the next few weeks before launch, we’ll continue previewing that history one piece at a time – but before we leave the Minutemen behind, we have one more glimpse of the Chrome to share.
Final Art - Black and White Art by Steven Cummings - Colors by Mike Majestic

The Rifts Glitter Boy Codex opens the vault on factions like the Minutemen, legendary figures like Hancock, and the traditions, personalities, and history that make the Glitter Boy Brotherhood much more than a collection of armored warriors.

The Road to the Glitter Boy Codex Begins

The Road to the Glitter Boy Codex Officially Begins!

The Glitter Boy is one of the most iconic symbols in the Rifts® Megaverse®, but the Rifts Glitter Boy Codex goes beyond the armor. It's about the people and the myths that surround it.

The Brotherhood

At the center is the Glitter Boy Brotherhood, a loose, far-reaching fellowship of pilots, crews, veterans, and wanderers who keep these suits alive and their stories moving. Some are noble defenders, some are retired veterans, and some wandering mercenaries drifting from the code.

In Progress - Black and White Artwork by Steven Cummings - Colors by Mike Majestic

The Glitter Boy Brotherhood is both informal and universal. If you are a Glitter Boy, you belong to the Brotherhood. Period.

While the Brotherhood may have no formal organizational structure as a whole, it is a collection of traditions and legacies honored and passed down through generations or via mentorship. Whether a member of a pilot faction, or a lone wolf freelancer, there is one guiding principle that stands: the suit is something to be honored, respected, and – when necessary – feared.

The Chromium Codex

Hidden within that legacy is something few outsiders truly understand: the Chromium Codex. Not just a book on a shelf, but a living record carried within the powersuits themselves, an archive of battles, honors, betrayals, warnings, and techniques passed from one Glitter Boy to another. When these chrome giants cross paths, their histories are shared, then travel with them carrying legacies across wilderness and ruin long after kingdoms fall and the truth becomes myth.

Chromium Codex - Artwork by Steven Cummings

Over the next few weeks, we'll open that vault and dive deeper into each of the major pilot factions, famous suits, folklore, cool gear, USA-G10 modifications, and player options.
