Project Update: Get ready for digital release, this time for real.

Hi everyone,

In our last update we communicated that we would release the digital files that very month. As you may have noticed, that did not happen. My apogolies for the delay. As mentioned, that was the month when we heard that the deadline for physical production of Mausritter Month Group Shipping had moved, giving us more space. Our intention was to release the digital files according to our original deadline anyway. This would give us more time to take in feedback. In reality, I filled that time with tweaking the adventures a bit more here and there. This has led to the present delay. In this update, I want to share the new deadline for physical release with you, and let you know what we've been up to.

Digital release

We will release the digital game THIS MONTH. That means at the latest, you can expect to receive the game on October 31st. We will not release our game via the mass pledge manager for Mausritter Month. So if you receive a large collection of files across various Mausritter Month projects, and you notice ours is not a part of that, that is correct. The reason for this, is that we want to release the digital game on Itch.io and give you a digital key. This way, if we make any updates to the game in the future, you will automatically have access to them via Itch.

Update your physical Feathertail Falls guidebook

Flights of Fancy can be used as a standalone adventure collection, but is also written as an expansion to Feathertail Falls, plugging perfectly into that setting. In the last months, we noticed a little quirk. We looked at the Feathertail Falls setting and at what we absolutely needed to update about that setting to add the new Flights of Fancy content. What we realised, was that we could limit our changes to the middle spread of the booklet (both on the front and the back). The physical copy of that booklet is staplebound, which means that you can bend the staple open, take out the middle spread and replace it with something else. This means that we have a unique opportunity to do something I think is pretty darn neat: allow people who own the original Feathertail Falls campaign booklet to update their physical booklet.

Our general approach is that if we see an opportunity to do something neat, even if it's a bit weird, we'll do it. So we abandoned our original plan to include a separate campaign leaflet. Instead, the middle spread—and only the middle spread—of the Feathertail Falls campaign guidebook has been updated to include the content from Flights of Fancy. This spread will be included in the physical release of Flights of Fancy.
  • If you have the original physical guidebook, all you have to do is bend the staples and replace the middle spread.
  • If you don't have the original physical guidebook, you can print it for free: when Flights of Fancy releases digitally, we will update the guidebook of Feathertail Falls with the added content from Flights of Fancy. You can download and print the guidebook for free on the Feathertail Falls Itch.io page (https://fanterland.itch.io/feathertail-falls), in the demo section.

Double sided item cards

Another new trick we added to Mausritter, is including item mechanics on the back of item cards. Traditionally, things like magic swords have abilities that require you to refer to the book. In Flights of Fancy, we aimed to include everything on the back of the item cards. But in further playtesting we noticed people were confused about when there was something on the back or not, so we added little triangles on the bottom right to let players know there's more on the back.

Tonal rewrites

Once layout and illustrations were done, I noticed that Max did such a good job adding a unique tone or vibe to each adventure, that my hands were Itching to match that. I did some extensive re-writing to adjust the voice in which each adventure is presented, to better compliment the great work that Max has done.

Room key tweaks

We have played more Feathertail Falls since the last update, which lead to some cool ideas. Just some tiny tweakes to room keys to make them even more distinct. Of course we made sure to add these to the final game.

Kind regards,
Peter & Max
