BackerKit FAQ

How does BackerKit crowdfunding work?

Crowdfunding is a collaborative way to bring ideas and projects to life. Project creators post their idea for a project, and backers pledge money to make the project possible. Backers get behind the scenes access and backer-only rewards, which can include exclusive products, special pricing, creative input, content, and more.

To become a backer, select a pledge level that features the reward(s) you would like to receive when the project is successfully completed and make your contribution.

All-or-nothing crowdfunding model: The creator sets a funding goal and a deadline to raise funds. If the project does not meet the goal by the deadline, backers credit cards are not charged and no money changes hands.

Crowdfunding projects can happen at various stages of the creative process. Make sure to check the estimated timeline of when rewards will be delivered. Project creators will keep you updated on the progress toward completion and delivery of your rewards.

Backing a crowdfunding campaign is not the same as purchasing an item from a store. When you back a campaign you are supporting the creation of something new. Rewards are almost always delivered, but are not guaranteed.

When will I be charged for my pledge?

Your payment method will not be charged right away. You will be charged for the amount of your pledge when the campaign ends and the project reaches its funding goal. You will not be charged if the campaign does not reach its funding goal.

What happens after the campaign is over?

The Creator will send out a survey that will ask you for more information about your pledge, your shipping information, additional items you may want to add to your pledge, and collect shipping fees if applicable.

The survey will be sent to the email address we have on file with your pledge.

Any additional payment will be charged when you complete your survey and confirm your order.

Project FAQ

What's the difference between the editions?

The first edition was black ink on white paper, done for Inktober, by Amy Smith. It features silver gilded edges, but otherwise has no foil on the front of the cards. The Caretaker has gone on record as saying it's the most 'true' to the original vision behind the deck. The second edition featured two versions of the deck. The Silver version was an updated version of Amy Smith's original deck, with many of the cards made much darker/prominently black in composition, and feature silver gilt edges and silver foil designs on the front of the cards. The Gold version was an all-new version by Samantha Dow with gold foil designs on the front and gold gilt edges. The third edition is a completely new take on the deck in full color by Ezra Kimbell, diverging from the original two decks in their black and white focus.

Are the Gold and Silver 2nd edition decks different?

Yes! The Silver deck was an updated, darker version of the original deck by Amy Smith, featuring silver foil work on the card fronts. The art largely matches the 1st edition deck, but all the cards were made darker to make the silver foil pop. The Gold deck was made by Samantha Dow, and has totally different illustrations on the cards to the Silver version or the 1st edition, though the card names are all the same.

Will there be future editions of the deck?

No. This is the last iteration of the Normal Tarot we're making. We will re-print the different decks over time as needed, but there won't be a 4th edition made. The Caretaker is working on new projects, as am I.

Who is the Caretaker? Are you the Caretaker?

No, I'm not the Caretaker. The Caretaker is an academic occultist best known as Normal-Horoscopes from Tumblr, where they released abnormal horoscopes daily in the olden days. Now they can be found under the handle Cryptotheism, where they have continued their academic occult journey with deep research into magic and new projects of various kinds. We met when I offered to make a book for them of their posts, which became Furiously Prognosticating, and then led to the Normal Tarot. I'm just facilitating the project, managing, and publishing.
