I have played a ton of Return to Dark Tower. I can confidently say that I've played more than anybody on the planet. I played a ton while we were first developing it. I played a ton with my game group, both while we were playtesting and long after it was published. (I knew we had a hit when they kept demanding to play -- usually their sick of our games by the time they actually come out.) I've demoed the game for hundreds of folks, sometimes joining in. And I've had a ton of great moments -- some pretty big wins and some devastating defeats. One of my most memorable defeats was when we were all set to the take down Gravemaw. I had a decent number of advantages, a nice supply of resources, and no corruptions. I felt like we were in great shape. One of the other players had two corruptions, but I figured we'd at least be able to bang out a bunch of cards and trade my items forward to the next player to finish the job. I did indeed grind through a few cards before getting whittled down and getting hit with a corruption. (RTDT veterans already probably have a good idea where this is heading.) Alas, I pulled Selfish, which prevented me from giving away the goodies to the next player. They were left standing naked, and old Gravemaw popped a building one turn later in the other hero's home kingdom. Game over. I think it was that very game that first put the seed of the idea for Covenant in my head. I started scribbling notes for new corruptions in a google sheet. Then, I thought of a few new treasures. Then, a wisp of an idea for a new hero. We had just started US fulfillment, and the design team was pretty burnt out with the ongoing refinements to the app effects. I remember posting a message to Brian, Noah, and Rob that basically said: "I know you don't want to hear this, but I have an idea for an expansion." It was met with a resounding "Too soon!" Well, in due time, we brainstormed some of the ideas, and the team came up with more, and we were off to the races. But more on that in a future update. All from that unforgettable loss. So what about you? Tell me about your big wins and bitter defeats. Or maybe just that time someone whiffed on the skull drop and it ended up bouncing into your Mountain Dew. Hit me with your best RTDT story.
