Project Update: Delays to Trans in the Machine (and what that means for you)

It’s the one update I didn’t want to write but, on reflection, one that seems inevitable.

When I was preparing this project for crowdfunding, I wanted the gap between backing and delivery of the book to be as small as possible. Accomplishing that meant giving myself six months to do all the research and write a full first draft ready for the editor.

Given I’m writing this book on top of a full-time job and childcare responsibilities, I can see now just how ambitious that target was. That’s resulted in some changes to the project and readjusting the timeline, which I’ve outlined below.

What’s Changed?

Thankfully, nothing major. But I’m having to adjust the amount of research I had planned, and the scope of some of the book’s later chapters.

This won’t impact its intended punch, nor compromise the book you thought you were backing. It just means I can’t go as broad or as deep as I would have liked in all areas. For that, I would have needed 12-18 months.

Is the Book Being Delayed?

Although I’ve had to take an additional 6-12 weeks to write the first draft, it’s my deepest hope that the final delivery date hasn’t been impacted.

You should all receive your digital and physical books by the end of March 2027 at the latest. We’re still on track to hit this date but, if anything changes, I’ll let you know. I’m trying my best not to let that happen.

What About the Posters?

Artist Lyss Menold is due to start working on the bonus poster reward within the next few months. These are still on track to be delivered by the end of January 2027.

I’ll share finished artwork once finalised in an update before shipping. To confirm, shipping is included as part of hitting the first stretch goal, so there’s nothing to pay.

When the books are ready to ship, you’ll be notified to pay P&P as per Backerkit’s approach.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. I’ve got a book to finish first.

So, Where Are You at With the Book?

I’m just finishing up with the chapter exploring the intersections of cyberpunk and disability. I’ll then move onto the video game chapter and the one focussed on artificial intelligence (the good, the bad, and the ugly).

Until the next sporadic update, look after yourselves!
