Project Update: REFRACTIONS - Released to Backers + Backer-Exclusive Content

Hi everyone!

Refractions is here!

[Edit: you can check out a few samples here: https://play.reelcrafter.com/northernsky/totbp-refractions]

Have you ever felt lost, broken, or rejected? Our latest album reaches back into the past to find old, forgotten, and "broken" songs to polish them up and make them "beautiful". The work spans over a decade of effort.

After more than a year of polishing and updating, this "small" project has grown into something massive, with efforts from more than 80 people (it may be closer to 100) world-wide, and it includes the incomparable talents of such performers as:

Judy Kang (resident cellist for Celine Dion)
Stroma FilmWorks (New Zealand orchestra comprised of performers from prestigious groups such as the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra)
Olivia Foa'i (singer on Disney's Moana)
... and many others

REFRACTIONS cover

Backer-Exclusive Content

Because this album is meant to show you our rough edges, we have included a special look-behind-the-curtain. As an additional download for Refractions backers only, we are sending you Refractions Origins, a collection of the "original" tracks from which Refractions was born - the broken tracks (as many of them as we are able to share.) Some of these are snippets; many are unmixed reference tracks sent to creative directors during the process.

For those who haven't pledged for a copy of Refractions, but would like to, we've re-opened the "pre-order" store. Simply head to the campaign page (https://talesoftheblackpiper.com), click "Pre-Order Now!", find Refractions in the list, add to cart, and place your order.

Refractions
Wider Release

We don't have a date yet for a wider release of Refractions. We are currently targeting May 2024, but we have a few things to work out first before fully committing to a date.

We also don't yet have any details on which, if any, platforms we will release it on. We will have it available for sale (at a higher price) on our website - at which point the "pre-order store" will be closed again. but beyond that stay tuned for updates.

Digital Downloads (important info for backers!)

Refractions has been broken up into several zip files. If you have ordered Refractions, you should get an email that directs you how to access your content and how to open the multipart zip files provided. (There are 5 zip files for the Refractions WAV format and 3 zip files for Refractions Origins.)

If you cannot find the instructions or have any trouble with the downloads - let us know!

As always, let us know if you have any comments or questions or just want to share some love!

Project Update: REFRACTIONS ... Tuesday! Also Movement On TALES

Hi everyone!

Exciting news regarding ....

REFRACTIONS Cover

Refractions Mastering is nearly complete. We just have to put a few finishing touches on the tracks (adding metadata, making sure tracks have the proper leading and trailing silence, etc.)

We're also putting some finishing touches on a (digital) companion booklet we'll be sending out to Refractions backers along with the music.

Oh, and I know that this "little" project has taken more than a year to complete. I didn't realize just how big it was until I saw the credits sheet. I mean, by big-budget Hollywood standards, it's not quite blockbuster size, but it's still pretty decent! I think I've counted over 80 people who've been involved!

Also, take a look at all these featured performers 😍!

REFRACTIONS Credits

Some great folks on there! Like:
  • Judy Kang (who has served as Celine Dion's resident cellist in Las Vegas)
  • Sandy Cameron (who has done some great work for Danny Elfman)
  • the Stroma FilmWorks orchestra in New Zealand (which is made up of people from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra - which recorded music for such films as Lord of the Rings), and many others!

OK, So When Will We Get It?!

Short answer is: Tuesday, if all works out!
Long answer: We're waiting on a few assets to plug into the companion booklet before finalizing it, and those may come in after Tuesday, but they are promised by Monday. So, as long as those come in in time and we can get everything proofed, you'll have it on Tuesday!

Yay!

If you haven't pledged for your copy of Refractions - there's still time to grab it for $10 before it goes out next week. (It'll be a few dollars more once we put it up for sale in April or May.)

Tales of The Black Piper

We also have some good news on the Tales front!

Status

I'm not sure whether we've mentioned this, but most of Tales is through the proofing stage - just waiting on a few last things there, and we have begun the audiobook narration, with some directions from the authors. Additionally, we are currently working on the music, and we will have our full focus on composing once Refractions has been delivered.

So, another "yay!"

Exciting things are happening. We're excited, I'm excited. We hope you're excited!

As always, let us know if you have any comments or questions.

All the best,

Michael & The Team @ The Black Piper

Project Update: REFRACTIONS: Off to the Mixer! Now on to TALES music

Hi everyone,

REFRACTIONS NEWS

Guess what??? FINALLY after more than a year of preparation, Refractions is now off to the mastering engineer! Oh my, we are SO STOKED!

What a year+ of effort looks like in spreadsheet form

You'll notice there are some blank checkmarks above. That's because the mastering engineer will also be mixing those tracks.

You'll also notice that there are 25 total tracks. Yeah, we kind of snuck a few in there we didn't originally plan on. Sorry about that....

Timeline (Refractions)

The mastering engineer will be looking things over today and giving me an estimate on timeline, but it really isn't that much farther to go!! I might guess 2 weeks, but he does work fast. We'll let you know, though.

Whew - I just have to say - this album has taken so much more effort than we thought it would. A lot of sleep sacrificed, but, you know, I think it's so worth it in the end for the art. (We hope you'll agree once we get this thing into your hands!)

Now, just have to settle on a cover...

One note - once the music and cover are done, we'll send the tracks out to all those who paid for Refractions (which was an add-on to the campaign.) We are looking to put the album up on streaming platforms and put it up for sale, but that might not happen for a couple of months.

TALES OF THE BLACK PIPER

So, now that we've wrapped on the main work for Refractions, we can fully turn our attentions / efforts to music for Tales of The Black Piper.

On the literary side of Tales, the stories are currently undergoing final proofing - but that won't affect the music aspect. The stories are essentially ready for us to get moving on.

#excited!

Well, that's it for now. More soon.

Hi all,

I have some great news for Refractions, which I think is fun to see it with a graphic:

Refractions: Nearing Mastering Phase!

That's right - we're about to go into the mastering phase (which will be a whole lot quicker than the prep phase!) The one thing we're waiting on is vocals for Count Me In, which should come in any day. Once we get the files for that, everything will be sent straightaway to the mastering engineer (who will also be mixing Count Me In, which is why that one isn't checked yet.) But the engineer is ready to dive in.

We did get a "thumbs up" on all the tracks we were chasing (just finalizing one last contract), so you'll be getting everything listed above!

I look forward to sending this out to you very soon!!

Project Update: Tales/Refractions Update

Hi all,

We hope you had a wonderful year-end/holidays.

We had hoped to complete Refractions in December and be on to music for Tales, but shortly after our last update, my family got hit by several rounds - one after the other - of sicknesses. From Covid to strep to flu to another round of Covid, it's basically been non-stop. As I'm writing this, we're suspecting some more possible Covid (not yet confirmed).

But... that doesn't mean we didn't make progress!

Refractions

Track Overview

Here's a breakdown on the overall status:

  • Rebuilding Working Files: 0 tracks (same as last time)
  • Heavy Compositional Updates: 0 tracks (same as last time)
  • Light Compositional Updates: 1 track (was 2)
  • Recording: 3 tracks (was 7)
  • Mix Prep: 2 tracks (was 3)
  • Mixing (initial mix pass complete): 4 tracks (was 8)
  • Finalized (Ready For Master): 13 tracks (was 3)

Timeline

We're currently running into 2 issues on the timeline (in addition to the aforementioned sicknesses):

1. Scheduling

We've been having a hard time scheduling the last of the performers. She's rather important to the given track, though we do have a fallback if things fall through. Still, if we can make things work with her, we'd prefer it.

1. Rights

We've been able to secure the rights to a majority of the tracks. (Since most of these were written as part of a project, we've had to speak with the rights holders for everything.) We received verbal agreements for each of the tracks, but we want to make sure that everything is properly tied down, so we are currently working through finalizing contracts. This is a process that takes a while, and we're still waiting on three separate parties (which collectively hold the rights to eight of the tracks.)

We're absolutely confident in being able to finalize three of those eight, but the other five--and one in particular--may have some challenges associated with them.

We do have a backup plan should any of them fall through, but we'll let you know.

Tales

Due to the status of the separate Refractions album, there's nothing new to report on Tales. As soon as we wrap on Refractions, we'll be reaching out to authors to start working with them on the music for Tales.

We're excited to be so close to wrapping on Refractions and especially excited to be nearing the start of the Tales music. We'll keep you all in the loop!

Project Update: Tales: Progress, Refractions: Almost There!

Hello everyone,

If you celebrated any recent holidays, we hope you had a great holiday!

It's been a bit since our last update. We've been working steadily, and we have a few updates for you.

Life Stuff

Before the fun updates, we just wanted to share that there has been some major life stuff that has impeded the progress on the Refractions album. One such thing is that I (Michael) had family move in with us due to a crisis. I won't go into details, but things have been stabilizing.

There have also been a few other things with family and friends, but thankfully things are generally in a good place now.

Additionally, one of our singers (who is important to one of the tracks) contracted a bad case of Covid, and she's had a long and hard several-month recovery. Thankfully, she's about out of the woods and ready to record.

Despite all of that, we have been making significant progress, and there is some very positive news to share as well below!

Tales of The Black Piper

Things continue to move along well with Tales. All alpha/beta reading is complete, and Jane (our wonderful Editor in Chief) has taken multiple passes with each story. Most of the stories are now awaiting proofing as their final step before heading onto the scoring (music composition) part of the process.

We do have a few stragglers, but in general, we're excited with where everything is, and we feel like we've ended up with some pretty great stories!

This whole project has been a bit of a new process for all of us, but especially the authors, and they've all done really well going through the rounds. Jane had this to say:

It's a privilege to hear that I've been a "first time professional edit" experience for some of the authors, and that it was a good one too! My goal is always to encourage and support the authors I work with and their heart's vision for their story, so I'm glad to hear that the process has been achievable and encouraging. It's been satisfying to see the submissions get stronger, and to work with so many different authors, each with unique stories to tell. It's very special to me to be part of the process!

Also, I just want to say that everyone has been so lovely to work with - from the authors to Jane to the alpha/beta readers! And Jane has been amazing, heading up the efforts and helping the authors get their stories through the process.

We really can't wait to share these fun, adventurous, meaningful, and in some cases hilarious stories with you!

Cover NOT final

Refractions (Final Name TBD)

General Status

This album has been a lot more work than anticipated. Almost on par with creating an album from the ground up. In addition, we've hit a number of unexpected difficulties, from corrupted working files to several tracks that needed major overhauls (both of which should probably be expected on older projects). We also had software updates that have been disasters, which caused us to lose work on two of the tracks. (But don't worry! We've managed to piece things back together from older backups.)

With that said--and despite the setbacks--at a high level, things are getting very close. We are almost ready to go into the mix stage (a few tracks are being mixed right now, and most of the remaining tracks are awaiting recording - more on that below). Most pieces have already gone through an initial pre-mix process. In fact, we only have 2 tracks that still need some light compositional updates, but other than those being recorded, everything else is on the last lap.

Recording Opportunities, Oh My!

One thing on the positive side has been a series of recordings that we hadn't initially planned on. They've slowed down the completion of the album, but they have been raising the quality significantly!

First, we worked with an old friend from high school (and her daughter) for vocals on a number of the tracks. Their involvement was late breaking but extremely welcome, and we're happy to report that it's complete (except for a small pickup of a 3 note countermelody and a backup vocal.) This was slower going, because, while they're both great singers, this was their first time in a professional environment, and extra time was needed to help guide them through the process. (Though once they got the hang of it, you almost couldn't tell that they weren't professional studio musicians.)

Another (huge!) thing that came up in terms of recording opportunities...
An engineer friend who works with the NZSO (New Zealand Symphony Orchestra) reached out. He also works with a smaller group who contracts out for film, etc, many of whose members come from the NZSO. They happened to have a time slot open for half an hour of strings. We weren't planning on recording anything for this album with a larger group, but we worked things out with them such that the cost/benefit lined up very well.

Well, it took an almost-all-nighter followed by an actual all-nighter to prep the materials for them (it was a fast turnaround), but they are speedy and accurate players, so they were able to record two of the songs on the album for us! And, we have to tell you: their playing was gorgeous! I may or may not have cried. They nailed each piece in just two takes. We are so looking forward to releasing these tracks!

Photo of their group pulled from their website, but NOT a photo of our session. It was almost midnight here when they recorded, so I just wasn't thinking about it... sorry!

We still have a few vocals left to record and possibly some winds. (Some of this was planned, but we've discovered that all of it is needed.)

Track Overview

In case you're interested, here's the overall breakdown on the status:
  • Rebuilding Working Files: 0 tracks (this is complete)
  • Heavy Compositional Updates: 0 tracks (this is complete)
  • Light Compositional Updates: 2 tracks
  • Recording: 7 tracks (these will go straight to Mixing once recorded)
  • Mix Prep: 3 tracks
  • Mixing (initial mix pass complete): 8 tracks
  • Finalized (Ready For Master): 3 tracks (one was pulled back for recording)

(Note: mastering is a process that will happen for all tracks all at once. They can't be pushed through individually.)

Also note that most of the tracks that are in the recording phase are generally ready for mixing (not much to prep), so once recorded, they'll go straight into mixing, and the two in "Light Compositional Updates" will be ready for mix once that's done as well. So, all-in-all, pending the recordings (a few of which still need to be scheduled), everything is extremely close to being mixed/mastered - which is the homestretch!

Status of Individual Tracks

  1. Out of Time - In Mix
  2. Following the Lightwisp - In Recording [Recording on Thurs, Nov 30 in England - and possibly additional in Kathmandu in the next 1.5 weeks]
  3. A New World Awaits - Possible recording [Idaho]
  4. You're Not Taking My Saddle - Ready for Mix
  5. Ribbon Dance - In Mix
  6. Cora - In Mix
  7. Cat and Mouse - In Mix
  8. A Plan and a Pair of Shades - Mixed, ready for Mastering
  9. The Letter/Everything Changes - Light compositional update, then Mix
  10. The Majesty Within - In Mix

  12. Rising in the Face of Yesterday - In Recording, then Mix [Recording next week, England]
  13. Fortify the Inner Sanctum - In Recording, then Mix [Recording on Thurs, Nov 30, England]
  14. They Won't Stop Coming - In Mix
  15. A World Corrupted - Possible Recording , then Mix
  16. Forging On - Recording pickups (mostly recorded already) [Idaho], then Mix
  17. Strap In - In Mix
  18. The Heroes Coalesce - In Mix
  19. Beauty From Ashes - Mixed, ready for Mastering
  20. Island, Home - Mixed, ready for Mastering

  22. (Bonus) Count Me In - In Recording (vocals) [NYC, with backup vocals in Idaho], then Mix
  23. (Bonus) Count Me In (Instrumental) - Ready for Mix

Updated Timeline

Recording should wrap in the next week to two weeks (except maybe the New York/Kathmandu vocalists). Mix would normally take a week to two weeks, but we're hoping the initial mix pass and prep makes that go faster.

With all that in mind, we'll be pushing hard to get this to you before Christmas. We're extremely excited about the album, and the praise we are receiving from the soloists has been extremely positive.

That's all for now! We'll be going heads-down again to see how quickly we can wrap this one up!

All the best,

Project Update: Tales & Refractions Update

Hi everyone,

I hope all is well with you!

We are hard at work over here plugging along on both Tales and Refractions, and I want to give you a few updates, starting with ...

Tales

Things are moving along on Tales of The Black Piper. All authors' stories have been read by the alpha reader crew (who provided some great comments on the stories!), and most of the stories have gone through their first editor round and have been returned to the authors. The remaining stories are being worked as we speak and should be back into authors hands by early next week.

The authors will have some time to make changes to their stories and send them back to the editor, at which point they will go through either more rounds with the editor and/or passed through the beta reader process.

We'll keep you updated!

(REFRACTIONS COVER ART SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

Refractions

This album has been quite a journey, and we have a few things to share with you - including what one veteran Hollywood professional said about our music!

When we took a poll regarding the number of tracks we would include on the album, the overwhelming response was that you all wanted "more!" Well, the short version is that we've increased the track count from 20 to 22 songs, and we're currently sitting at just under 45 minutes of music, though that will likely end up around 50 minutes when we're all done.

If you're interested in the process, read on!

The Process

Originally, we thought it would be a simple matter to select our best tracks, polish them up, and get an album straight into your hands. Well, as we listened to our carefully-selected favorites on repeat, it became clear that, as with the rest of our work, we needed to "tell a story", something that is, after all, a significant part of our brand. Well... telling a story turned out to be a bit of a challenge with such a disparate set of tracks.

So, we sat down and mapped the tracks out (not to an actual story, but to an imagined idea of a story overlaid over a rough hero's journey.) That helped to line things up, but we also found that some tracks which we were excited about ultimately needed to go.

The Tracks That Wouldn't Work

We discovered after repeated listenings that a small number of songs wouldn't work as part of "the story". So we killed some darlings/cut a few tracks. Having promised 20 tracks, we needed to find a few more to fit. Fortunately, this wasn't hard to do, but it would require a bit of additional work, since some of the replacement tracks were in rough shape.

Also...

The Fortuitous Discovery Within a Discovery

One of those "behind the scenes" things we've been working on has been securing rights to songs. We owned a few of our selected tracks, but the remaining songs have all required some form of negotiation.

During such negotiations with one client, something interesting happened. We were hammering out the rights for a certain track, when we came upon the mutual realization that this track had never actually been purchased. (It had been commissioned, but the project it was meant for had been completed and the track had not been selected for the given project.) That was nice from a rights perspective, but there were two discoveries that came from it:

1. In trying to determine who had the rights to the track, the client sent us two (other) songs that had been paid for. One of them, it turned out, was a song that had long been forgotten. It, too, had not been used in the final project, but it had been paid for. We realized it would be a perfect addition to the album, so we negotiated for it.

2. Then, while loading up the old session for that newly re-discovered track, we found another song buried in the session files! This one had been started but never completed! Oftentimes, a composer will work through some ideas; some will get rejected by the client and some will be tossed out by the composer before they get fully baked. This was one such case. The song was good; it just hadn't been right for the original project. After listening to it, we thought this track would fit perfectly on the album!

Recording

Originally, we didn't think we had a lot to record, but as we've switched out tracks and dug into others, we've found the need for a few soloists. It hasn't been a ton of recording, but it has been enough to slow us down a little. It's actually been a good thing, as we've been fortunate to work with some phenomenal performers.

One in particular, Chris Tedesco, who has worked in Hollywood for over 35 years on everything from Iron Man to The Princess Switch and has played with/for such stars as Josh Groban, Shakira, and Barry Manilow had some high praise to say about what we're doing:

"The charts are impeccable! [...] The tracks were done very well writing wise - iconic film type cues, really cool stuff - wish there were more of you that know what they're doing [...] These tracks are home runs [...] Your melodies are good - I've seen it all in 36 years - lots of writers can't write like this." (edited for formatting)

WOW!

Timeline

With the changes & additions to the album, we're currently looking at mid-to-late October. We'll be pushing for sooner, but we'll keep you updated.

Track List / Working Titles

For the curious, here's a look at our current track list:

  1. Out of Time
  2. A New World Awaits
  3. Following the Lightwisp
  4. You're Not Taking My Saddle
  5. Ribbon Dance
  6. Cora
  7. A Brief Moment
  8. Cat and Mouse
  9. A Plan and a Pair of Shades
  10. The Letter/Everything Changes
  11. No Matter the Cost (Teancum's Theme)
  12. The Majesty Within
  13. Fortify the Inner Sanctum
  14. They Won't Stop Coming
  15. A World Corrupted
  16. Rising in the Face of Yesterday
  17. Strap In
  18. The Heroes Coalesce
  19. Beauty From Ashes
  20. Island, Home
  21. Time Heals All Wounds
  22. (Bonus) Count Me In

Well, that's all for now - back to work!

As always, please let us know if you have any questions, or feel free to drop us a line!

Project Update: Stories Due Friday + Refractions Progress

Hi all (and especially authors)!

We have received stories from 9 of our backer authors so far, and we're looking forward to receiving the remaining stories.

Remember the stories are due this Friday, June 30! I've heard from several of you who are finalizing things as we speak. If you have any extenuating circumstances, please email us to make arrangements, but otherwise, our Editor-in-chief, Jane, has been preparing and is so excited to begin working with you!

If any of you have any questions, please let us know - either by email, Discord, or even comments on this update.

Refractions

We have been making great progress on Refractions, and we have most of the soloists recorded that we are planning on. We just have a few vocals left to get, and we should be done on the recording side. Things are still progressing slower than hoped, in part because of some of the things we mentioned on the last update (working with old files, etc) but also because, as we've been getting into the old songs, we've realized that some of them would be more satisfying if we made some updates to them, such as lengthening the tracks and massaging material surrounding different parts of the songs. As we've been doing this, we feel like they have been shaping up nicely.

On a more creative note, this is going to be a bit of an eclectic album. There will be several tracks of a cinematic/orchestral nature (in a few different genres), a few electronic tracks, a couple of "World" tracks, and, if we can swing it, a song with lyrics. It's really going to be a fun album, and it'll be fun figuring out the best way to present them/in what order. We are getting so excited to share these with you soon!

Here's the current state of the album:
--------------------------------------
Rebuilding Working Files: 6 tracks
Updating Composition: 2 tracks
Recording: 2 tracks
Mix Prep:  2 tracks
Mixing (initial mix pass complete): 4 tracks
Finalized:
4 tracks

That's all for now - back to work!

All the best,
Michael & The Team @ The Black Piper

Project Update: Deliveries, Deadlines, Dates, and Locked Orders

Hi everyone,

Things have been cruising along over here at The Black Piper, and we have a few things to chat with you about regarding deliveries (which have started, yay!), deadlines, dates, and (sorry to break the alliteration...) locked orders.

Locked Orders

First thing, as the time for the locking of orders has come, the next step will be charging cards for items added through the BackerKit pledge manager. We'll be doing that later this week and wanted to give you a heads up in case you need to make any adjustments with your cards or funds. If you foresee any issues, please let us know, and we'll be happy to work things out with you.

(Or if any of you have any last minute changes you want to sneak in, send us an email, and we'd be happy to oblige if it's before we charge - likely this weekend.)

As a reminder, shipping will not be charged at this time - that will happen as we get closer to the shipping date, and we'll make sure to communicate with you beforehand so that you are prepared!

Rewards Delivery

We have started delivering some rewards! We sent out both Reflections and the digital artwork a few weeks ago (though the downloads may not show up for everyone until charges are settled.) But if you backed those two rewards and you have a zero balance, then you should have gotten an email and/or be able to see them in your download section on BackerKit.

Tales of The Black Piper

A few stories have come in from a handful of authors (thank you to those who have already submitted!) Those who have not yet submitted, the deadline is June 30. If you can't find the link to the form for submission, please message us.

We have been preparing things on our end, and will be ready for editing in full force in July! This will be an especially exciting time - getting to work with each of you individually, and we hope you're looking forward to the experience!

Refractions

This album has been moving forward steadily, though slowly. We've been having to rebuild old sessions manually in a painstaking/time consuming process, updating old instrumentation, rebuilding mixes, etc. And we're doing some solo recording to help polish a few of the tracks. We're making good progress, but it's likely that delivery on Refractions will be pushed back a little, but we'll keep you updated.

That said, we may consider releasing a "part 1" in July and the remainder/"part 2" once it's ready.

Either way, we'll make sure you know as soon as we have things more fully nailed down.

Well, that's all for now! Looking forward to great stories from all the authors!

All the best,
Michael & The Team @ The Black Piper

Every time we reach a multiple of $10k (for the first time), authors tiers will receive a tier reduction of $20, up to $150 off of a custom composition.
Goal: $12,952 / $20,000
64%
We need $7,048 more to reach this goal.
