Project Update: October Update - Samples in the Works, First Run Printing Details
Fair winds and following seas, Captains! Here’s the October update.
Production
Good news first. Everything has passed inspection and the samples are being printed. Micah is coming out to NYC before we head down to PAX Unplugged to record a play-through. It's tight but we hope to be able to play with those samples. Stay tuned.
Costs
Now a bit of headwind. Our latest quote increased production costs by 22%. Some of that was expected, since we’ve been making odds and ends better. Most of it, though, is “exchange rate fluctuations and changes in raw material prices in the market.” Yikes.
We’re going to absorb this for the first printing. We believe in this game and want to make sure it gets into as many hands as possible. We will have to recalculate after the first run, though. The current plan is to ship the full shebang as is, then make some changes to later printings so the price can stay where it is. That means separating out a few of the more expensive unlocks, like the deluxe trackers.
The Crowdfunding Edition
So we’re officially making this first run Crowdfunding Edition a one time thing. There are two parts to it:
The box itself (gold foil and UV printing) and the custom insert will be unique to this first printing. We’re also looking into whether we can number each copy.
Most of the upgrades will go into their own pack instead of being baked into the box. That way we don’t punish folks who discover Red Tides later, and we can support LGS. The “Crowdfunding Upgrade” (name TBD) will be available to buy separately.
The wording on the pre-order store will update to reflect this.
The First Run
The first print run will be about 1,500 copies. Our goal is to get all 1,500 into the hands of players, and we’re over halfway there. We’re going to make a push to get the rest out there.
On the economics side, the crowdfunding marketing, the production and a bunch of misc stuff are all paid for, even with the cost increase. The remaining sales go toward sustainable future printings, convention presence, outreach, further development of Red Tides, and work on the next game. As of today we haven’t paid ourselves, but one day we’ll try and do that too.
What This Means for You
None of this affects y’all. You all get the absolute maximum, like John Hammond says. (Side note: that's an insane thing to say, John, and not accurate.)
If you are...

If you are...
- OG Backer - You get everything you already expected.
- Current Pre-Order Backers - Now you get everything the OG Backers get
- Future Buyers - Depends on if you get any of the remaining First Run copies. As of 11/3 there are about 650 remaining. Once they are gone, the Crowdfunding Upgrade pack will be available for purchase. The First Run box and insert will not be available.
Face the horizon and scream into the salt!
