Codex Monstorum, a book of monsters by Troll Lord Games (that's us!) is published for use with our games, Castles & Crusades (the very game Gary Gygax had a hand in creating; the game that created the entire OSR movement, and the game whose attribute check system was the basis for 5e's driving mechanic! Do you want to know more?) and Amazing Adventures both power by SIEGE.
Read on, 5e gamers; Codex Monstorum can easily be used in tandem with any of the world's most popular roleplaying game. Below you'll find some examples of the monsters we've included, and how they can fit into your 5e game. Though, if you're interested in giving a new old-school system a try, C&C and Amazing Adventures are waiting.
Amazing Adventures is the next level of SIEGE Engine role playing. Using the same celebrated rules as Castles & Crusades, this multi-genre role playing game gives you a universal rulebook to capture any style of fantasy you want, with simple, attribute-check-based mechanics that are built for lightning-fast play that’s also worlds of fun. Whether you’re looking to portray Musketeers and pirates in the 16th century, fearful colonists dealing with the dark unknown in the black forests of the New World, modern demon hunters fighting horrors of the Deeper Dark in the back alleys of cities, or explorers on the new frontier of deep space in the far-flung future,Amazing Adventures has what you need.

At the 2003 GAMA trade show Steve and Todd were enjoying dinner when John Nephew of Atlas Games stopped by to say hello. John asked Steve what TLG's plans were for the coming bust. Steve, having little business experience, indicated they had no plan and were only vaguely aware of a saturated market. John advised strongly that TLG do something to cushion itself when the d20 market bubble burst. Returning to their offices they began talking about possible expansions away from d20, considering a journal, fiction, expanded Gygax line, and creating their own game. Mac Golden and Davis Chenault both joined the conversation. The idea of creating a RPG for TLG circulated.
Simultaneously Gary Gygax inquired how TLG would put Castle Zagyg, his long standing famous mega dungeon, out as he felt it needed a different game system than d20. Gary had no interest in creating his own and when he was told that the idea of TLG creating its own RPG, he encouraged it, so long as it would have the spirit of AD&D. All this fed into Steve's desire to move away from d20 as an RPG and into something easier to play. By Summer of 2003 Mac and Davis offered to create this new system. Steve's only insistence is that it "be as easy to run as AD&D", a game he had played since its release in the 1970s. Late in 2003 work began on the game that would eventually become Castles & Crusades. It was first released at Gencon in 2004 with the White Box Set.
As the company struggled to make ends meet, work continued on Castles & Crusades. Throughout 2003 and into 2004 the game took shape. Mac and Davis worked on it, late in the evenings on their respective front porches, as they lived across from each on Brown St. in Little Rock. With Gencon ’04 approaching, the company needed something to showcase, and so a small introductory set was put together. It was decided to make a small box set that emulated the original D&D release in 1974. One thousand copies were ordered. Each would come with three books, zocchi dice, and a pencil. A box manufacturer missed their deadline and failed to create the boxes with labels on them. They did however supply 100 blank, white boxes, that Steve, Mark, and Todd Gray sat and laboriously labeled with stickers. AGuide & Rules System for Fantasy Role Playing was released at the show that year. Later the full print run was released and put up for sale, and the first 300, called the Spartan 300, were signed and numbered by Steve, Mac, Davis, and Peter Bradley.
The completed Castles & Crusades Players Handbook released on the TLG store in December of 2004. It was a black and white 128-page book that contained all the rules for the game. The initial response to C&C was strong as role-playing game enthusiasts had little new material out there. C&C was styled as an immersive role-playing game with a light focus on mechanics, its SIEGE Engine exemplified this.
Gary Gygax first for Castle Zagyg followed in 2005, Castle Zagyg Yggsburgh! He styled, as many have since, that C&C was the natural progression that Dungeons & Dragons should have taken.
