The Basic Roleplaying System (BRP) is a percentile-based roleplaying system developed by Chaosium Inc. It uses a d100 roll to determine the success of actions based on skill percentages. The system emphasizes realism and flexibility, with characters defined by core characteristics (like Strength and Intelligence) and a wide range of skills. The Exorcist's Codex is based on the latest version of BRP, focusing on investigative horror and spiritual confrontations.
No, The Exorcist's Codex is designed to be accessible to both new and experienced players. The book explains all core mechanics, and the percentile-based system is straightforward, making it easy for newcomers to learn while remaining engaging for veteran players.
No, The Exorcist's Codex is a fictional horror setting inspired by folklore, myths, and historical exorcism practices from various cultures and religions. While it explores themes of faith and spiritual conflict, it does so from a narrative and mechanical perspective, not as an endorsement or critique of any belief system.
When designing The Exorcist’s Codex, we wanted to set it in an era where many mysteries remained unsolved—a time before international travel was common, before Google Earth, before the internet and instant communication. A world still shrouded in darkness, where demons could more easily remain hidden. That’s why we chose the 1890s: a time when the world was still veiled in mystery, yet travel was possible for the few, and interest in the occult was at its peak. That said, playing in a modern setting is absolutely possible. You would, of course, need to adjust available equipment, communication, and transportation, as modern technology would change how investigations unfold. However, the core gameplay—i.e. Rituals, Divine Powers and Holy Items—remains unchanged. With some effort to adapt the setting, The Exorcist’s Codex could work just as well in the present day.
The Exorcist's Codex will offer free access to character sheets and rules on Virtual Tabletop (VTT) platforms as soon as the books are ready for delivery! To reach as many players as possible, our dedicated team is working to make this available on both Roll20, Foundry, and Alchemy! While The Exorcist's Codex is primarily designed as a Theater of the Mind experience, we understand that many prefer the accessibility and tools provided by VTT platforms. We're exploring the best way to provide full VTT integration for The Exorcist's Codex. However, a full level of integration is divided into stretch goals, as it requires substantial time and resources. Achieving this will depend on the campaign reaching specific funding levels.
No, The Exorcist's Codex will not use any AI-generated artwork. All illustrations and visual elements are created by professional human artists, ensuring originality, authenticity, and artistic integrity throughout the project. We are committed to supporting talented creators and maintaining a unique visual style that fits the themes of the game.
No, shipping is not included in your pledge. Shipping costs will be calculated and charged separately through Backerkit once the campaign is completed and we approach the fulfillment stage. Additionally, depending on your location, you may be required to pay applicable sales tax or VAT during the pledge manager phase.
We estimate that the remaining writing, and layout of the rulebooks, will be completed by the end of May. After that, physical production can begin while we finalize the digital rewards. If everything goes smoothly, we expect a PDF release in June/July.
Everyone who followed the campaign before launch will receive The Demonologist Journal Vol. 1 for free as part of their pledge. However, we can only process this after the campaign is complete, as that’s when we categorize pre-launch followers who qualify for the free copy. So, it won’t show up in your pledge just yet, but rest assured—we’ll add it for all pre-launch followers once the campaign concludes!
We will collect your shipping details and apply shipping charges closer to the time of fulfillment when the books are ready to be shipped. Sales tax and VAT will also be collected at this stage if required by your country’s regulations.
We aim to make The Exorcist's Codex available in retail and as a digital download after the campaign's completion, though at a 15% higher price than the offer during this campaign. However, certain rewards and limited-edition items will be exclusive to backers, so supporting the campaign ensures access to all content.

BackerKit FAQ
BackerKit Crowdfunding is an all-or-nothing collaborative funding platform. Creators share their project ideas and set a funding goal with a deadline. Backers pledge money to help make the project possible.
If the project meets its goal by the deadline, pledges are charged and the creator moves forward. If it doesn’t, no one is charged.
Backers often receive special rewards for their support, such as:
- Exclusive products
- Bonus rewards for backing related projects
- Discount pricing
- Behind-the-scenes updates
- Creative input opportunities
Pledging in crowdfunding is a commitment to support the creation of a new product or project. Unlike a traditional purchase, you're not buying an item that already exists. Instead, your contribution helps bring a creative idea to life, and in return, you typically receive rewards (such as the product itself) as a thank you for your early support.
- Select a pledge level with the reward(s) you would like to receive
- Select any add-ons
- Confirm your pledge!
- You are charged only if the campaign meets its funding goal.
- Charges happen when the campaign ends, not when you pledge.
The creator will send you a survey to:
- Ask you for more information about your rewards (selecting options, etc)
- Collect shipping information
- Offer additional items you may want to add to your pledge
- Collect shipping fees (if applicable)
The survey will be sent to the email address we have on file with your pledge. Additional payments are charged when you complete the survey.
Only the project creator and the BackerKit Support Team can see your pledge and contact information. Other backers and the public cannot see your individual pledge amount or personal details.
You can change or adjust your pledge level and add-ons before the campaign ends. After the project concludes, cancellations or changes are at the creator's discretion and may depend on what stage the project is in.
Overtime Mode extends your campaign past its original end time to give backers a final chance to make their pledge. It will add an additional 10 minutes past the end time as long as pledges keep coming in. The campaign will end when there is a 10-minute period without any new pledges.
