I always loved to read as a kid and could get lost in the world of books. As an adult I went years hardly reading at all just bc adult life is a lot and ADHD... Then when a family member was in a health crisis I was seeking a dissociative outlet and suddenly romance books rekindled my love of reading and getting lost in a world through the page. In the last 2 years and change I've read about 400 books, almost exclusively romance of some kind; but if you ask me, while that can sound limiting, it's really barely a dotted line of a box around a hugely open-ended group of books. The only real reason it's so easily dismissed by others is bc it's seen as a feminine genre, and we are all trapped in the confines of the patriarchy and it's toxicity. I especially love sci-fi and dark romance, but I'm also deeply para-socially committed to some entire hockey teams' love stories, among others. Dark romcom really holds the top spot for my favorite subgenre but the things I seek out (well-written, complex characters and their surprising love stories that reflect all the nuance and feeling of the human condition) can be found in any of these genres even ones that from the outside may look silly. (Case in point - don't let me hear you coming for Cambric Creek- those stories wreck me in every way).
