Traveller characteristics are adapted to ability scores, with both rolled and package-based creation options.
Every Traveller skill is converted to a proficiency, feat, or otherwise addressed in the rules; characters can do anything in this new edition that they could do in the original.
All 14 Traveller careers and pre-career options are available as backgrounds, and there are 9 new spacefarer subclasses such as xenobiologist and hacker. The new Psion class is designed especially for Traveller 5E as well.
And, yes, just like in classic Traveller, your character can die during character generation!
