THE BASIC DETAILS OF THE ELBOW

The cover of Worn Tuff Elbow #3

THE BASIC DETAILS:
In 2004 I published WORN TUFF ELBOW #1 with Fantagraphics and 14 years later I published the follow-up issue, WORN TUFF ELBOW #2, under my own imprint NO WORLD BOOKS. 2024 is the *20th Anniversary* of WORN TUFF ELBOW and so I am happy to say the THIRD issue will be out this year (also from NO WORLD BOOKS). That's an issue every 6.6666666667 years. If all goes as planned it will be out in September.

I love creating “floppies”, in other words, saddle-stitched or stapled periodical comic books. There is an informal quality to the process which I find interesting.

Worn Tuff Elbow #3 will be a full colour 8” x 10.5” comic book with 32 interior pages.

Be sure to check out the wonderful variety of tier levels here including ones featuring my upcoming book from D&Q (RAW SEWAGE SCIENCE FICTION) and obscure RARITIES unearthed to offer to you, dear readers!

THE PRESS COPY:
"Follow the journey of Slogan Schnauzer as he is set the task of locating the Orgate Discombobulator. Sidetracked by a group of "foodies" (that resemble cue balls on two legs) and a variety of other personalities, Slogan becomes confused and lost and eventually on a plane to Japan (and subsequently stripped of his current identity by the powers that be). Resembling a fever dream, this full colour comic strip is accompanied by lots of fake satirical ads and other odds and ends that will be sure to delight the reader including Bell's foray back into satirical autobiographical comics. The exciting and dynamic third issue of Worn Tuff Elbow marks the 20th anniversary of this exciting series!"

GEORGE LUCAS'D:
The story in this issue, Slogan Schnauzer, is reprinted from Kramers Ergot #10. However: since Kramers Ergot #10 was an oversize publication (11" x 14"), the material had to be re-formatted for this publication. This left many gaps in the story flow which were filled with all new material and the story was re-coloured in full colour (as it appeared before it was only in one and two colours). This I see as a more definitive version. It's previous incarnation looks unfinished in comparison. The example above is one of the new panels created for the new version of the story.

THE BIGGER ELBOW PICTURE

A panel from the semi-autobiographical intro strip (NOTE: Marc does understand that his characters are not actually real...we hope?)

As you'd expect, especially if you have seen my publications before, WORN TUFF ELBOW #3 is jam-packed with a bunch of eye ball kicks and other goofy "chicken fat" stuff. The main comic story herein can be read as a stand-alone yarn but the situations they set up will spill over into subsequent issues. If you have read WORN TUFF ELBOW #2 you may wonder how that could possibly connect with this one but I have a larger story in mind which I have been slowly piecing together. In fact I have placed art from #2 and #3 into a layout program and upon examining the narratives set up already, I can see this could be one of the strangest books I will ever make (and that is saying something I suppose)!

The accompanying material (odds and ends) in the book will include a whimsical autobiographical comic strip ruminating on the state of my life and perspective on the other material in the book. I rarely do any sort of autobio comics anymore and so this will be an interesting throwback.

Drawn & Quarterly (Aug. 20 2024)

From the press copy:

"The great fine art doodler returns

Canadian treasure Marc Bell returns with another gorgeous, confounding comic that redefines how an art book can tell a story and how a graphic novel can be an object first and story second. His internal monologue leaks out like static from a radio and informs the external; he’s tying up loose ends; he’s finishing long-paused sentences.

Raw Sewage Science Fiction is about making art and understanding the results as autobiography. The process is a series of indignities, bubble wrapped frames, unpaid invoices, art lost through neglect or in the mail. Bell uses autofiction, collage, straight comix, tight cross hatching, loose doodling, repurposed in-flight magazines, envelopes, grocery lists, and snatches of late night CBC radio to examine a lost decade as he wanders from coast to coast.

In a century, these will be our illuminated manuscripts, our sacred texts, our guides to life for now they are simply the truth—the irritating, confounding, glorious truth."

Feast your eyes on the bad photo of the "RAW SEWAGE SOURCE MATERIAL PARTY COMBO"!

RARITIES AND OTHER ADD-ONS:

I have unearthed some real Bell rarities for this campaign in an attempt to clear the decks. Like the photo above, for example, this is the RAW SEWAGE SOURCE MATERIAL PARTY COMBO. For sale are (only) two sets of these hard-to-find mostly self-published materials used to create the book RAW SEWAGE SCIENCE FICTION. This is not ALL the source material but it is a sizeable chunk of it. Have fun leafing through these booklets to see what was included in the final book and what was not. What was embellished and what was left well enough alone. Prices are adjusted above the original retail in order to reflect value on places like "Ebay" and the like.

Have a look at the different tiers to see varied combinations of the aformentioned material plus OTHER out of print or rare books:

WORN TUFF CHARACTER DRAWING

Above: an example of a drawing of a "minor character" from Worn Tuff Elbow #2

An original drawing of a character from WORN TUFF ELBOW #3. I will decide which one! Drawings will be in pen and ink and on a piece of paper no smaller than 4" x 5". With the drawing you will also receive a signed copy of the book so can look through and find your character in there somewhere! I should note: in this go-around I intend to draw each character in an actual enclosed panel. So imagine that little beast above with a panel surrounding them and some background details. And their name.

"TINKLE TEST" ORIGINAL ART

This is an example of a page from the story "Tinkle Test" from Worn Tuff Elbow #2

An original page from the story 'Tinkle Test' from WORN TUFF ELBOW #2 featuring Shrimpy and/or Paul. These are being offered at a heavily disounted prince (at least 50% off of comic art dealer rate) as a special offer for this campaign. Pages measure 15" high and 11" wide, pen and ink on fine 140 lb hotpress Fabriano watercolour paper. You will also be supplied with a signed copy of the book so you can see the page in print!  NOTE: These will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. You will be put in a queue and you will be sent a series of pages for you to choose from! Some panels may have shifted during publication and so some finished pages in the print copy of Worn Tuff Elbow #2 may vary. *Serious inquiries only*.
