Project Update: We've Funded!
Friends, Aurans, Countrymen -
On behalf of Autarch and the entire writing group behind the Annals, thank you for your support - we funded in the first day! Now it's onward and upward to stretch goals.
Funding for Annals is, of course, far more difficult task than for my RPGs. Part of why it's difficult is because that this crowdfunding campaign does not include any "commission custom content" pledge tiers that our RPG campaigns typically do. Those tiers often bring in 20% or more of our total pledges. So why did I exclude them? There are two reasons for this.
First, fiction is more art than science; creating a custom class or customer monster is something a game designer can do reliably to the satisfaction of his audience. Creating a custom story is not, with even the greatest writers widely criticized by their own fans for their narrative choices.
Second, commissioning custom content imposes considerable delays on the production process. Part of the reason Before All Others has taken so long is that it had so much custom content - the number of custom classes exceed the number of base classes, for instance.
I decided to avoid both problems in Annals and I think that was the right decision. However, it means there aren't as many high-tier rewards to push us into big numbers. Therefore we have to work harder to get the word out.
Over the days ahead, I'll be sharing excerpts and sneak previews of the Annals. If you like what you read, I hope you'll share them with friends who love fiction. Unlike the 1,500-page ACKS II system, Annals is easy to "buy into" for anyone; no gaming group and no 2-year weekly commitment required. Hopefully it can reach new folks who love tales of heroes, sorcerers, monsters, and mayhem.
For now, thank you for the outpouring of support, and here's to hitting our stretch goals before the campaign ends.
