A lot of the propaganda during the European colonization of Africa focused on the supposed unique superiority of white people and how they had unique, heritable traits that made them qualified to conquer and "civilize" African nations. I really don't like the line "Is there some rare trait that makes you uniquely qualified to lead disparate peoples, bring them together to achieve great things? I think... there must be" because it reminds me a lot of race science of that era. In addition, there was a lot of art made asking white western nations to take up the project of empire and civilize the rest of the world to get them to organize, which sounds like the human led coalition line. It feels very reminiscent of the rhetoric of The White Man's Burden. Imagine if you substituted the word "human" for "European" here and see how much more uncomfortable it is to read. It's also worth noting that much of modern fantasy has its origins in serialized adventure storytelling, which was often direct propaganda for imperial war effort and white supremacist efforts in empire. In fantasy, many of the same white supremacist tropes were recreated as human supremacist tropes. Humans are uniquely good, uniquely qualified to lead, the only ones who can save the world, which is the exact language of real world empire. Maybe I'm wrong, and in the final product this will be obvious human supremacist propaganda about humans written from a figurehead that we are supposed to criticize, but right now this seems like the kind of thing MCDM was really sensitive to and smart to avoid in previous products. It's just very disappointing to me to see this kind of language without acknowledging that.
