BackerKit FAQ

How does BackerKit crowdfunding work?

Crowdfunding is a collaborative way to bring ideas and projects to life. Project creators post their idea for a project, and backers pledge money to make the project possible. Backers get behind the scenes access and backer-only rewards, which can include exclusive products, special pricing, creative input, content, and more.

To become a backer, select a pledge level that features the reward(s) you would like to receive when the project is successfully completed and make your contribution.

All-or-nothing crowdfunding model: The creator sets a funding goal and a deadline to raise funds. If the project does not meet the goal by the deadline, backers credit cards are not charged and no money changes hands.

Crowdfunding projects can happen at various stages of the creative process. Make sure to check the estimated timeline of when rewards will be delivered. Project creators will keep you updated on the progress toward completion and delivery of your rewards.

Backing a crowdfunding campaign is not the same as purchasing an item from a store. When you back a campaign you are supporting the creation of something new. Rewards are almost always delivered, but are not guaranteed.

When will I be charged for my pledge?

Your payment method will not be charged right away. You will be charged for the amount of your pledge when the campaign ends and the project reaches its funding goal. You will not be charged if the campaign does not reach its funding goal.

What happens after the campaign is over?

The Creator will send out a survey that will ask you for more information about your pledge, your shipping information, additional items you may want to add to your pledge, and collect shipping fees if applicable.

The survey will be sent to the email address we have on file with your pledge.

Any additional payment will be charged when you complete your survey and confirm your order.

Project FAQ

I'm new to RPGs. Which items do I need?

The standard corebook contains everything you need to play, other than some standard gaming supplies: pencils, maybe some scratch paper or a notebook, and some gaming dice (in particular, the Cypher System uses a d20, a d6, and percentile dice). You don’t need our dice--any gaming dice will do--and you don’t strictly need any of the other items we’re offering. You’ll have a great time with just those basics and the corebook! The other items, such as the Character Portfolios and GM Campaign Notebook, are extras that add to the immersion of the experience and make running and organizing your adventures and characters that much faster and easier.

It looks like the Investigative Team pledge level, and those above it, include two copies of the game—the Limited Edition Deluxe and the standard version. Is this correct?

You’re reading that right! At Investigative Team and above, you get both the Limited Edition Deluxe version of The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game, and a copy of the standard edition. Keep one pristine, or have two to use at the game table!

I signed up to be notified before the campaign, or pledged within the first 48 hours. How do I get my Magnus Institute cassette tape?

If you signed up to be notified about the campaign before it launched, all you need to do is back at any pledge level. You get the cassette tape automatically added to your rewards in the pledge manager after the campaign. (If you backed in the first 48 hours, you'll also get the tape, regardless of whether you signed up beforehand. Again, it's automatic.) The cost of shipping isn't included in your pledge; you'll pay it when your rewards ship. (See the Shipping section on the main page.) The cassette tape will be shipped with your corebook, so for most pledge levels it will not increase the cost of shipping (for domestic backers, that is--overseas backers may see a very small increase). Backers at the Intern level, for whom there are no other physical rewards, will pay shipping for the cassette.

Does the game include character sheets, or do I need to get the Character Portfolios?

We always include a character sheet as part of every complete RPG we publish, and we generally make it available as a free download as well as including it in the book. You do not need the Character Portfolios to record or manage your The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game character. That said, if you do get the Character Portfolios, we guarantee you won't regret it! At a cost of just a few bucks per portfolio, they organize things beautifully, give you loads of room for the sorts of things your jot down on character sheets, and generally deliver a very deluxe experience. You'll never want to go back go a home-printed character sheet again!

The campaign page says the Limited Edition Deluxe version of the game may be upgraded with exclusive content. Will that be included in the standard edition, too?

We hope to unlock additional upgrades to the Limited Edition Deluxe version of the corebook through stretch goals, and that might include more content. But all upgrades to the deluxe version would be the sort features that make the book even deluxier in nature. That applies to the content as well as physical features—so we're talking things like full-page art plates, rather than more game rules or background information. The standard rulebook will have all the same game content as the deluxe version, so nobody will miss game content just because they don’t have the deluxe.

Is there a pledge level if I just want add-ons?

We’re making some cool things for this campaign, and we appreciate your interest in our non-game add-ons. While we don't have plans to include an add-on only pledge level, many of the items we're making will be available for retail purchase upon their release. (Those marked Limited Edition are likely to only be available through this campaign.)

Will I be able to make a pledge, or upgrade my pledge, after the campaign?

We intend to make late pledges available following the campaign, and backers will be able to upgrade their pledges, and add add-ons, in the pledge manager. As always, to absolutely ensure you don’t miss out, our advice is to back the campaign even if it’s at a lower level than you want. This will ensure that you’re in the pledge manager, where you can make upgrades if you like, after the campaign closes.
