Today we finish up the Ready-Made Character section of the book with Kai Watanabe.
Before we get to that, please check out our update from yesterday - the One Week Left Check In - which gives some key info and makes sure we're all on the same page as we race through the final week of this campaign.
Kai Watanabe
Kai is a victim of curiosity. A forever “wallflower” kid at school and into young adulthood, they’d only jump into animated discussion when talking about unsolved mysteries, fringe religions and cultures, and other subjects that would just make normies glaze over. Kai was never deterred however, their curiosity drawing them into the orbit of a fellow enthusiast of “academia obscura” named Mr. Earle. It was through Earle that Kai learned all manner of rituals and tricks designed to apply and manipulate luck. While Earle’s other students saw the practices as trivial distractions or dangerous obsessions, Kai was able to sense the sorcery in what their tutor was teaching.
Earle knew Kai was special. They came from a special family with a special history. Earle made Kai an offer: would you sacrifice everything to access true magic? Kai didn’t even consider the question hypothetical. They said “yes” and forged the pact that made them a Sorcerer.
Now, Kai acts as an amateur scholar of curses for their crew of friends, and an increasingly bold explorer and student of liminalities. Earle vanished a few years ago, and Kai is still determined to find out what became of the strange man, so full of wisdom, but clearly unhinged with it.
The Wolf You Feedback
As noted, with these draft versions, you're able to share feedback directly with the Curseborne Crew as they walk the project through the final stages of development and production. There may be a few weird formatting things - this "draft manuscript" is actually the text pulled out of the layout in progress, so we may get a few repititions and weird artifacts. And any errata you submit may not show up corrected until after the first-round backer PDF goes out, but it's all being compiled, so your keen eyes are appreciated. Here's the Feedback Form for you to submit your errata:
Remember, thanks to BackerKit sorcery, these download links are visible to Backers only - you must be logged in and reading this on the website to have access to the manuscript preview links. So, if you're reading this via e-mail, click that "Reply to this Update" or "Learn More" button on the bottom and I'll see you below this title treatment.
