Immortal Universe RPG - Interview with the Vampire · 20,733 following
Step through the doorway to an entirely new roleplaying experience. Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe is coming to your tabletop as a new RPG system from Renegade Game Studios. Established in the world brought to life by the hit AMC series Interview with the Vampire, The Mayfair Witches, and Talamasca: The Secret Order.
*Physical Pledges Only
This first campaign will introduce fans to the Immortal Universe through the iconic Southern Gothic setting of Interview with the Vampire. What fans can expect from the Interview with the Vampire roleplaying experience can be broken down into three thematic pillars…
Don’t be afraid darling, it won't hurt... much. The Interview with the Vampire Starter Set includes everything you’ll need to delve into the Immortal Universe Roleplaying Game, even if you’ve never played or run a roleplaying game before. You’ll be thrust into the vibrant and mysterious New Orleans of the late 1940s, playing as Lestat de Lioncourt's abandoned fledglings.
The included Learn-to-Play booklet teaches you the basics as you play, leading you through A Scent of Cloves and Lilac, a full chronicle (what we call an adventure in the Immortal Universe system). Plus, you’ll find additional surprises within: props, visual aids, dice, maps, and more. All to be revealed in due time, ma chère.
Once you’re ready to delve deeper, the Interview with the Vampire New Orleans hardcover will provide you with features to tell your very own story within the Immortal Universe. Specifically, this book zooms out to encompass the entire span of time between 1910 and 2020 in New Orleans.
Players can create their own characters: human, fledgling, or experienced vampire, then imagine and weave a tale in the same world as Lestat, Louis, and Claudia. You might even meet them yourself.
Je vais te croquer, mon amour.
Success can be as dramatic as failure. Even when characters achieve what they want, the consequences can create new problems, tensions, or tragedies.
The Past Is a Mechanic. Memory, unreliable narration, and personal history are integrated into gameplay, instead of just being narrative flavor.
Playing across time. The “Flashback System” gives players the ability to change the story in the midst of playing.
Flashbacks recontextualize the present. Flashbacks can be short scenes to full sessions where players can play out the past events of their characters. And the system can change what they understand about their own backstories.
Jump into different decades. You can start a chronicle in 2020 and still find ways to jump back to 1920. It’s never just “now”.
Collaborative storytelling. The "Rewrite" mechanic offers players brief narrative control to change scenes as they’re unfolding. A body needs to be disposed of before dawn? Spend a Rewrite and your character recalls the dockworker who owes them a favor.
Three different damage tracks. Characters can experience physical, psychological, or emotional harm, depending on what happens to them. Track not only your Wounds, but your Despair and Torment as well.
Emphasis on roleplay. Your character is defined by fascinations, the passions and roles that make them who they are. Tap into your character's emotions to shed Despair. Play to their calling and ease psychological Torment. Lean into who your character is to heal the damage they’ve accrued.
So what are you waiting for? All you need to do... is nod your head and open your heart.

Blood, Love, and Eternity
Good day, Immortals
It’s a very busy weekend for Renegade! We’ve got a booth set up at Gamehole Con in Madison, WI where some of you are getting to play Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe TTRPG for the first time.
Are you at Gamehole con and looking for us? Head down to the south end of the lobby. If you catch Lestat’s eye then you’re in the right place.
We’ve also uploaded our Immortal Universe TTRPG Producer Interview as its own video on YouTube so if you haven’t seen it yet check it out here!
For today’s update we wanted to touch a little bit on the three pillars you see on our prelaunch page.
Blood Love Eternity
With all the kinds of vampires and vampirism in the world a lot of time was spent really examining what’s core to our vampires.
Blood
Life-giving, hunger-sating, blood is a core aspect of vampirism. There is always a price to pay. Whether you’re a vampire looking to avoid harming humans or you’re all-in on biting necks it’s blood that fuels you and it will always be calling to your instincts.
Love
Just as blood is the core of a vampire's physical hunger, love is the core of their emotional hunger, and love comes in many forms. If you hold on to it over centuries it can morph, from simple lust to dark obsession. So many stories in the Immortal Universe are driven by love (no spoilers!) so it’s only natural that it becomes a core part of the game.
Eternity
All that remains. If you tear down the life you’ve made you can rebuild it again and again ad infinitum. When you watch the people and places you care about continue to change and grow while you stay the same as something outside of the changing world. Is the love and joy of the now worth the pain and loneliness of the inevitable future?
There is always tomorrow to build on, and always past memories to dwell on as well.

SPOILERS AHEAD
Episode Description: Louis and Claudia continue trying to include Lestat as a member of the family, but after Lestat interferes too many times, their endurance is pushed to the limit.
If your partner kept a secret like the cloud gift from you, could you forgive them?
What if that wasn’t the only secret?
This episode is full of all kinds of pain. The pain of betrayal, the pain of reunion, the pain of remembering.
The confrontation scene, and really the whole episode shows the love both Claudia and Lestat have for Louis, even if they don’t have it for each other. Especially when Lestat goes out of his way to make sure that Claudia doesn’t leave.
And I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the San Francisco dream. No spoilers of course but…interesting. To say the least.
Do you remember what you were thinking and feeling when you saw this episode for the first time?
After all the excitement of last week it’s nice to have a week of calm to reflect, especially as we settle into the longer nights of autumn.
We’ll start this week’s post off with the reminders:
Gamehole Con is in Madison, WI and we’re having special First Look play sessions of Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe TTRPG. If you want to sign up (or tell someone else to sign up and report back) then purchase your tickets to the First Look Events here 🎲
Now that it’s October the countdown to launch has begun and that means that the clock is ticking on the Lestat Calling Card VIP pre-pledge offer. These cards won’t be available as part of the campaign so if you want one now is the time. You can Pre-Pledge here 🎩
If you didn’t catch the interview during Renegade Con you can watch the chat Good Morning Society had with producer Rachel J. Wilkinson you can catch it as part of the larger Renegade Con stream here 🗯. That link will take you to the start of the interview and we also plan on uploading the video on its own so it’ll be up on our YouTube channel soon.
Last reminder is our weekly discussion post- this week’s episode is A Vile Hunger for Your Hammering Heart and it marks the halfway point of our Season 1 rewatch (since we watched episodes 1 & 2 in the same week)! Join the discussion here ♥.
Want another preview of game mechanics? Then just read on!
In the past couple of weeks we’ve touched on the dice rolls in Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe TTRPG, but we haven’t discussed the results. When we talked about tests in our update about rolls in the game towards the end there was a mention of escalation.
What is escalation?
This is a mechanic that brings a little bit more realistic conflict to the game. When rolling dice and facing the test you’re attempting to accomplish an action, but it’s not always so simple as ‘you rolled well so you can do the action’.
It is possible to put a little too much English on the ball, so to speak.
After all of your adjustments and re-rolls your roll will land in one of four states:
Natural Success: Get the required number of hits without the use of rerolls or adjustments.
Controlled Success: Get the required number of hits with the use of rerolls or adjustments.
Chaotic Success: Get more hits than the target, despite the use of rerolls and adjustments. You succeed at the task but also gain an escalation.
Failure: Get fewer hits than the target, despite the use of rerolls and adjustments. You fail the task and gain an escalation with a tier equal to the hits under the target.
Escalations are the uncontrolled results of a test. Failure inherently carries escalations, but a chaotic success (rolling too many hits) can be just as dangerous.
Escalations are earned in tiers, depending on how many hits you rolled over or under the target. Tier 1 for 1 hit over or under the target, tier 2 for 2 hits, and so on.
A small escalation could be as simple as breaking a useful tool or attracting some odd looks, you succeed but there’s a minor cost or suffer a minor setback with a failure. However, you can also have a higher tier escalation.
For example, if you attempt to enter a party under a false identity and earn a tier 3 escalation, you will be granted entry, but the person whose name you used shows up right after you’ve been invited in. On a failure, however, this might bar your entry to the location entirely for a time.
Escalations reflect the truth of life, succeeding isn’t simple and sometimes comes with unforeseen consequences.
Of course this is a very short overview of the mechanic, just a simplified sneak peek. Keep an eye on our updates for more previews.
IWTV EP 5 Discussion: A Vile Hunger for Your Hammering Heart
SPOILERS AHEAD
Episode Description: Claudia's activities and curiosities present continued challenges for Louis and Lestat. Her actions light an explosive fuse that erupts at episode's end.
Did your parents ever read your diary? I stopped keeping one because I didn’t like the idea of my innermost thoughts being accessible to someone else, even if that someone else was a future me. Claudia’s diaries are so important for Daniel’s research but they’re also a look into the mind of a person who is stuck. Someone who isn’t content with unanswered questions, and ultimately Lestat’s refusal to answer them drives her away.
I spent this entire episode aching for our little vampire family. I actually had to step away at the end. Love is something that can be so painful and dangerous while still being something we all need.
Human connection is a bit of a misnomer when it comes to vampires but it’s the best phrase for what it feels like they’re craving. Especially during the cemetery scene.
Would things be different if Claudia had stayed away? If Louis and Lestat left New Orleans? If Louis hadn’t worried about her for those seven years?
An early update today. Or perhaps late, if you’ve been up since sunset.
Renegade Con
Today’s a very busy day for Renegade Game Studios! Today is our virtual Renegade Con that we mentioned in last week’s post and we wanted to give you one last reminder, just in case you wanted to drop in.
We have a schedule packed full of content you won't want to miss. Including the premiere of our highly anticipated interview with producer and designer Rachel J. Wilkinson at 2 PM PT/ 5PM ET.
Or if you miss the livestream our friends at Good Time Society will be posting the VOD to their channel and we’ll share the link once it’s live.
The Vampire Dice
Today we have more dice previews! Why settle for just one set when you can have many? I wanted to show off the new mockups of two more of our dice sets.
The First Bite Dice Set and the Little Drink Liquid Core Dice Set.
First Bite Dice Set
Little Drink Liquid Core Dice Set
The Little Drink dice have a liquid core that catches the light beautifully when rolled across the table, encouraging you to have just a little drink.
The First Bite dice are translucent with swirls of red sneaking through, evoking the look and feel of, well, the first bite.
Both sets are sharp edge resin dice shine with the vibrance of fresh blood.
The dice you can already see on the pre-launch page are the Starter Set dice in a wrought iron and gold filigree colorway. Those dice will only be available in the starter set, these will be available to add-on to your pledge separately at any tier.
Many of you have pointed out the art-deco style and quiet elegance of the dice shape and color. We worked to make these dice longer and more pointed than standard d10s to evoke the look and feel of vampire teeth. It’s another little reminder of your humanity, or lack thereof.
We also have three more dice sets with matching bags that will be exclusive to the campaign and are inspired by some of your favorite vampires. Make sure you stop by Renegade Con today to get a look at those 😉.
Reminders
Dear Immortals I’ll close out today’s post with a few reminders. It’s very easy to forget little things when you’ve lived for so long.
Firstly, if you plan on pre-pledging for the Lestat calling card you should do it sooner rather than later. It’s limited to backers who pre-pledge and will not be available after the campaign launches so don’t delay.
If you’ll be at Gamehole Con in Madison, Wisconsin in two weeks then make sure you’ve signed up for one of our First Look events. This will be the first time anyone has played the game and we’re eager to hear what the community thinks.
And of course, if you’re watching or re-watching Season 1 of Interview With the Vampire this week’s discussion post which covers Episode 4, "...The Ruthless Pursuit of Blood with All a Child's Demanding"
IWTV EP 4 Discussion: ...The Ruthless Pursuit of Blood with All a Child's Demanding
SPOILERS AHEAD
Episode Description: Claudia's transformation into a vampire teen completely changes Louis and Lestat's lives. Louis and Lestat are forced to confront questions about making a teen vampire. Claudia learns dark realities of her new life.
I was on the edge of my seat for this episode! Episodes 3 and 4 are another “pair” of episodes (like I mentioned in the discussion posts for 1 & 2) that I think hit hardest when watched back to back.
Claudia’s presence is a HUGE change in Louis and Lestat’s lives. The beginning of the episode is heart wrenching and Claudia’s perception of Louis and Lestat as angels at first before “realizing” they’re “hell demons”.
She comes in and shakes up the domestic little life they’ve built, which is what usually happens when a child joins the family, isn’t it?
There’s fun and lighthearted bits, Claudia’s birthday party, the fishing scene with her and Louis. But there’s also heartache, meeting Louis’ family at his mother’s wake, Claudia’s slow realization that she’s not just different from humans, she’s also different from the only other vampires she knows. So she goes looking for connection, which is an understandable desire from a teenager. And she does find one.
Charlie.
What age is the “right” age to become immortal? The strength and vitality of youth? The wisdom and lessons learned from age?
It’s a good thing when you’re playing a TTRPG you can play any kind of vampire you like.
