Crowned EN World’s Most Anticipated TTRPG of 2026, Deathbringer is a dark fantasy tabletop RPG of grim survival and brutal violence, compatible with Shadowdark and all OSR games, where fast rules, lethal combat, and a world rotting from the inside out ensure that every session feels like it could be your last.

Forged in blood by Professor DM and Roll For Combat, with contributions from Brandon Gillam, this is not another safe fantasy game. This is steel. Fire. Consequence.

Combat is fast. Victories are earned. Death is real.

The old games have grown soft. It’s time to sharpen the blade and remind those of the price of failure... and bloody glory!

Edit
Deathbringer is dark fantasy stripped to the bone — savage, blood-soaked, and merciless. It honors the old-school roots of the hobby and burns away everything that slows it down. Heroes here are dark, gritty things. The weak and prim do not survive this age.

One tight d20 core: roll, add your stat, beat the number. Beneath that simplicity — escalating danger, cinematic violence, and choices that matter. Every session plays like the final chapter of a legend. Fully compatible with Shadowdark and all OSR games, but it plays by its own brutal rules.
  • Fast and Lethal — Learn it in one sitting. Die in less.
  • Death Has Consequences — Scar up. Lose a limb. Cheat death twice. The third time, you go out in a blaze of glory.
  • Ultimate Dungeon Terrain — Full rules for running combat on Professor DM's official UDT. Three zones. Zero escape.
  • Death Dice — Change your fate with a roll of the dice! Simple to use, brutal to run out of.
  • Combat That Doesn't Wait Around — Combat is fast, fun, and, with use of the Death Die, incredibly strategic.
  • The Shattered Empire — The world is dying, and so will you, but you're going to take as many as you can with you!
  • A Bestiary of Horrors — Monsters and villains enough to fill a hundred sessions with fresh funerals.
  • A Full GM Toolkit — Everything a Game Master needs to deliver doom without breaking stride.
  • Shadowdark Compatible — Drops into any OSR campaign with zero friction. Your monsters work. Your players won't survive.
Edit

Ultimate Dungeon Terrain: The Whole Battlefield in Three Zones

Deathbringer includes the official Ultimate Dungeon Terrain (UDT), invented by Professor DM! No grids. No measuring tape. No mercy. Deathbringer combat runs on Professor DM's Ultimate Dungeon Terrain, one 18-inch circle, three zones, total clarity about who's in reach and who's about to be. The full UDT rules are baked into the core book: setup in seconds, combat at full speed, death always closer than it appears.

Learn how Ultimate Dungeon Terrain works from Professor DM himself!

These maps depict whatever killing ground your session demands — stone, wood, grass, forest, dirt, rocks, desert, ice, lava, water, jungle, forest, castle, stone, swamp, sewer, sky, and space. Sixteen terrains spanning every place a character can perish, which is to say, everywhere.
  • 18 Inches, Three Zones — Room for minis of every size, with setup and teardown faster than a first-level funeral.
  • Wet & Dry Erase — Draw with either marker. Chart the carnage, wipe it clean, doom again.
  • Double-Sided — A different terrain on each side. Flip the mat, not the mood. The mood is always grim.
  • Three Zones of Dread — Close sits dead center (emphasis on dead), near fills the middle, far waits along the edge. You always know exactly how close the horror is.
  • Built for Deathbringer, Welcome Anywhere — Works with Shadowdark, most OSR games, even D&D — any TTRPG where things die on a table.
  • No Measuring, No Mercy — Move between zones, target, attack. Faster fights mean faster fatalities.

Quick to setup, easy to use, works with any game and all your existing minis!
Edit

Eight core classes, each a brutal archetype built for grim fantasy. Use these or any Shadowdark classes in the world of Deathbringer.

A faith-armored warrior of light, cloistered since childhood, fighting a never-ending crusade against darkness with a greatsword and holy fury, seeking not survival but martyrdom against impossible odds.

A ruthless tracker who tracks scoundrels, fugitives, and witches across the Shattered Empire with manacles, a truncheon, and absolutely no moral quibbling — as long as the coin is right.

An alchemically and sorcerously enhanced killing machine whose body has been rebuilt for war, hacking and crushing through hordes of foes without pausing to register pain.

A decade-apprenticed arcane learner who tattoos spells directly onto their skin and casts magic that corrupts the world a little more with every use, serving dangerous patrons who dole out forbidden knowledge one deadly errand at a time.

Born from a world of eternal war, the Fighter is a professional warrior of all trades — gladiator, mercenary, archer, or duelist — who masters any weapon, wears any armor, and spends Death Dice to strike harder and faster than anyone else on the battlefield.

A ghoulish physician in a beaked mask who goes where death has already descended, equal parts alchemist and undertaker, fearing neither pestilence nor pox, motivated by something hidden behind those hollow goggled eyes.

A shadow-dwelling opportunist who lives by the motto "take what can be taken, don't get caught," treating theft not as a crime but as the only sensible career in a world with so little left to share.

A zealot driven by divine mandate or grim pragmatism to purge magic-users from the land, armed with steel, sermons, and the absolute conviction that witches are a poison that kills all living things.

Learn about the Deathbringer classes from Professor DM himself!

Edit

The creatures of Deathbringer are not pulled from a neutral monster manual. They are the direct consequence of a world in decay — a world where magic has poisoned the land, where moonstone warps flesh and mind, and where the Corruption spreading through every living thing turns the desperate into the monstrous. In Deathbringer, monsters aren't random encounters. They are evidence of how badly everything has gone wrong.

Magic broke this world. When Doomscribes spread their toxic Corruption across the land, crops withered, children were born weak, and the creatures of the world began to mutate into horrific forms. The Abhorrent shambling through a dungeon was once a person — someone who came into contact with moonstone one too many times. The Pig-Faced Orc leading a warband? Likely human once, before Corruption and the urge to pillage consumed them completely. Even the Troll, once a peaceful spirit of earth and stone, has been twisted into a hideous regenerating horror by the same blight that eats at the world. The monsters of Deathbringer are a window into what this world is becoming.

The Skull Rating System. Every monster in Deathbringer carries a skull rating — a blunt, visual signal of how much danger the party is walking into. One skull means minion-level fodder, the kind of threat that softens a party up before something worse arrives. Five skulls means legendary — a creature that defines campaigns, the kind of thing players will talk about long after the session ends. There's nothing mathematical or fussy about it. It's a skull count. More skulls, more death.

Compatible With Everything. Deathbringer monsters run seamlessly alongside Shadowdark creatures with a single conversion: pick a Rolls modifier (usually the highest attack bonus) and go. The skull rating maps cleanly to Shadowdark level ranges. GMs running monsters from any Arcane Library book or Roll For Combat's Monster Hunt, Strange & Unusual, or Elemental Storm books will find their bestiaries fully at home in a Deathbringer campaign.
Edit
Combat is a key component of TTRPGs, and Deathbringer is no different. But unlike other games, where combat can drag on forever, searching through an endless menu of little-used skills and abilities, Deathbringer combat is fast, fun, and strategic.

  • Zone-based combat, no grid — battles play out across three zones (Close, Near, Far) instead of a measured battlemap; move a zone and attack, or burn your turn to shift two zones.
  • No fiddly initiative — whoever started the fight goes first, then their side; players declare actions clockwise, then everyone rolls at once. Simultaneous fights resolve as chaotic mass rolls.
  • Readiness bonus — acting quickly and decisively earns a flat +2 to the attack roll, rewarding fast decisions at the table.
  • Death Dice drive everything — Get a new set per session, spend after a check or attack to boost a roll, add damage, block incoming damage, or fuel improvised heroics (dual wield, flying leap, whatever you can sell the GM on).
  • Exploding damage dice — max the die, roll again and keep adding, no cap.
  • Critical success is a menu, not a number — nat 20 lets you double damage and attack again, knock the target back, disarm them, sunder their armor, or grab extra positioning.
  • Fumbles bite back — nat 1 sends you to a mishap table: weapon broken, weapon dropped, or a near-miss recovery.
  • Death has three stages — 0 HP the first two times leaves you scarred, maimed, and stronger (a new Prestige Talent each time); the third time, you get one final action that's an automatic crit before you go down.
  • Clean escape option — disengaging and fleeing a zone carries no penalty; no punishing your table for not fighting to the death.

Watch Deathbringer combat in action from Professor DM himself!

Edit

The Shattered Empire is a realm of eternal war, stitched together by the Bone Road, a crumbling highway connecting cities no one remembers building. Its gods are indifferent to prayer, its heroes are gritty and morally gray, and its magic is a dangerous mystery even to the wizards who wield it. There are no gallant princes or fair maidens here.

Every character starts as an unremarkable, desperate soul, because in this world, survival alone is an achievement. Wolves stalk the wilderness, the undead never break morale, and magic items are rare, cursed, and always priced in blood.

This is a world built for cinematic splatter, not tactical tidiness. Fight dirty, improvise wildly, and expect the mud to claim you eventually. Only the strong survive. Learn more about the Shattered Empire from Professor DM himself!

Edit

Deathbringer includes everything you need to run the game:

  • A Complete Ruleset — Everything you need to run Deathbringer from first session to final death, in one volume. Deathbringer works directly with Shadowdark rules, classes, monsters, and adventures, but you don't need the Shadowdark rules to get started.
  • 8 Brutal Classes Battle Nun, Bounty Hunter, Deathbringer, Doomscribe, Fighter, Plague Doctor, Thief, and Witch Hunter, each with unique abilities and Talent tables up to level 20.
  • Learn About the Dark Fantasy Setting, The Shattered Empire Enter a dying world poisoned by magic, ruled by corrupt nobles, and crawling with things that want you dead.
  • Fast, Lethal Combat — No initiative rolls, exploding damage dice, Death Dice, and Kill Shot tables that make every decisive blow unforgettable.
  • A Full Magic System — Six tiers of Doomscribe spells, a Mishap Table for botched casts, and dangerous patrons who dole out power at a price.
  • A Complete Bestiary Skill-rated monsters with scripted attack sequences, plus tools to build your own creatures in minutes.
  • GM Toolkits — Random generators for dungeons, cities, wilderness, and hirelings to build living adventures on the fly.
  • The Bone Road — A d100 encounter table for the ancient crumbling road connecting the empire's cities, packed with chaos, horror, and the occasional miracle.
  • A Starter Adventure The Fungus-Licking Cannibal Cult: a complete introductory dungeon ready to run on day one.
  • Digest Size — Deathbringer arrives in digest size, a perfect match for Shadowdark and the OSR games it descends from. Full-color layout on every page, an inbound bookmark to mark where you died last, and a form factor built for the table.
  • Quality Throughout — Deathbringer is built to last and take a beating at the table. Reference charts on the inside covers, lay-flat sewn binding, an inbound ribbon bookmark, full-color old-school art throughout, a two-page spread layout, and built to last.

The rules for Deathbringer are complete, but the final page count is still being determined. Between stretch goals and playtest results, the final page count has yet to be determined.
Edit

Deathbringer adventures are swift. Savage. Unforgiving. And unlike anything your table has survived before — assuming your table survives at all.

The Deathbringer core rules includes Professor DM's own nightmare made manifest: The Fungus Licking Cannibal Cult. Yes… you may taste the fungus. No, we won't tell you what happens after. That's between you and the spores.

But one nightmare is never enough! We've summoned a dark conclave of the greatest adventure writers in the land — legends, bestsellers, and award-winners — each crafting a brand-new adventure designed specially for Deathbringer:
  • Kelsey Dionne, creator of Shadowdark and winner of the 2024 ENNIE Awards, including Product of the Year, Best Game, Best Layout & Design, and Best Rules
  • Justin Alexander, author of the USA TODAY Bestseller So You Want to Be a Game Master? and 2024 ENnie Gold Award Winner
  • Luke Stratton, creator of Pirate Borg
  • Brandon Gillam, founder of RPG publishing imprint RUNEHAMMER
  • Daniel Fox, creator of ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG
  • Ben Milton, from Questing Beast, creator of Knave and Maze Rats
  • Baron DeRopp, Dungeon Masterpiece
  • Luke Hart, The DM Lair
  • Discourse Minis, Dungeons & Discourse
  • David McFarland, DM Scotty
  • William Tanner Schroeder, Paladin Prose
  • Grace "World Destroyer" Mason (the title is earned)
  • Bob World Builder
  • And more to come — the conclave grows…

Each adventure: a fresh doom. Each author is a legend with your party's name on their list. Your characters have never died in such distinguished company.
Edit

Deathbringer shares Shadowdark's DNA — but mutates it in vivid ways. All Shadowdark rules, monsters, classes, magic, and adventures work in Deathbringer, but new rules have been added to the world. Here's a quick overview (not the full list):
  • Permanent Modes — Three brutal modes are always active:
    • Blitz Mode — Torch timers last only 30 minutes.
    • Grinder Mode — Resting recovers only one HP die roll.
    • Momentum Mode — Gain Advantage when you repeat a failed action on your next turn. Plus, damage dice explode with no cap — roll maximum damage and keep rolling.
  • No Death Timers — You Can Die Three Times — Death is just the beginning! First time at 0 HP: gain a scar and a Prestige Talent, growing more powerful after seeing the face of death. Second time: lose a limb or an eye, but earn another Prestige Talent — power at a price. Third time: you die — but not before one final action that automatically succeeds as a Critical Success. Go out in a blaze of glory!
  • Death Dice — Forget Luck Tokens. Start each session with three d6 Death Dice — your pool of grit, resolve, and desperation. Spend them after a roll to boost checks, add damage, or absorb hits. Give one to an ally. Spend them all or lose them at session's end — hoarding does not befit a hero.
  • Spellcasting Written in Flesh — Wizards are replaced by Doomscribes, who must tattoo their spells onto their skin. All similar spellcasting classes carry their power written in flesh.
  • Corruption — Corruption is slowly consuming the world. Fight against gaining Corruption Points — reach 10 and your character becomes a monster controlled by the GM. Redemption is possible, but it must be earned through heroic deeds.
  • Round-by-Round Initiative — Whoever starts the fight goes first. Combat rounds run lightning fast using Professor DM's official Ultimate Dungeon Terrain. No measuring. No flanking. Just move, attack, and roll damage. Simple, fast, cinematic.
  • Levels Up to 20 — Survive long enough, and legends are made.
  • Easy-to-Run Monsters & Combat — Every monster uses a single modifier for all rolls, so even large encounters stay fast and easy to run.

Soft enough for the tavern, black enough for the tomb. Available in sizes Small through 5XL — because doom fits everyone. You'll select your size after the campaign ends. If you survive that long.

Early Deathbringer Playtest Access

Every backer will hold the finished Deathbringer rulebook — polished, complete, and dripping with doom. But for those who pledge at the top tiers, the gates open early.

We need dedicated players to help us test and fine-tune the rules — and those bold enough to answer will receive early private access to the Deathbringer playtest with the Roll For Combat team and Professor DM himself!

Early access playtesters will get early access to the rules and adventures, access to a private Discord channel, your name in the final rules as a playtester, and feedback Zoom calls with the Deathbringer Development Team and Professor DM himself!

So roll up a Battle Nun. Push your luck with the Death Dice. Fight, fall, and help forge the final rulebook — your feedback sharpens the blade that everyone will wield when Deathbringer ships.
Deathbringer Pawns

The Deathbringer Pawns bring your battles to life — briefly — with heavy chipboard paper pawns printed with official artwork. Every hero, horror, and villain of the Deathbringer TTRPG, standing at attention and awaiting their turn to fall. No miniatures to paint, no lead to curse over — just slot each pawn into the included plastic bases and march them to their fate. Pawns range from small to huge, because doom comes in all sizes. And when a creature falls, it topples with a satisfying little tick — the sound of a soul departing on a budget.
Official Deathbringer GM Screen

The Official Deathbringer GM Screen rises between you and your players like the wall of doom it is. On their side: a custom battle scene sprawling across every panel, a glorious vision of carnage to remind them what's coming (current art depiction not final — the doom, however, is). On your side: every Deathbringer table and quick rule you need, arranged for instant reference, so the killing blow never waits on a page number. (art not final)
Official Deathbringer Dice Bag & Death Dice
The Official Deathbringer Dice Bag & Death Dice is where your dice dwell between judgments — a dark vessel worthy of the doom they deliver. Drop in your Death Dice, cinch the drawstring, and carry your arsenal from table to table like the grim executioner you are.

Deathbringer: Songs of the Shattered Empire

You thought silence was good enough for my carnage? Fools! Every swing of my axe, every scream that echoes off dungeon stone, deserves a proper anthem, and now you have one! Deathbringer: Songs of the Shattered Empire is composed by Michael Gordon Shapiro, a lifelong gamer worthy of my attention, and produced by Matt Brownlie, a GRAMMY-winning engineer who knows the sound of glory when he hears it. A full band! Custom vocals! Recorded not for your delicate ears, but for the mountain of skulls I stand upon!

Spin this record before your table dares roll a single die. Let it thunder through your den, your basement, your sad little apartment, wherever you gather to pretend at heroism. When the blood starts flowing and the dice run cold, this is the sound of your doom arriving on schedule.

What you receive, mortal:
  • A custom 12-inch color vinyl, pressed for those who understand true glory
  • Every song, digital and eternal, for whenever the mood for slaughter strikes
  • A special adventure written for this album alone, found nowhere else in all the thousand hells

Play it loud. Play it often. I will know if you don't.

Deathbringer Poster Set

Your walls are bare. Your walls are vulnerable. We can fix that! Get a set of eight full-color Deathbringer posters, each a massive 47x21 inches of glorious doom printed on glossy poster stock. These aren't decorations — they're declarations. Hang them in your game room and let every player who enters know exactly what kind of table they've sat down at: the kind where the art is beautiful, the stakes are fatal, and the walls have been watching characters die for some time now.
Deathbringer Total Party Kill Dice Sets

These dice weren't made. They survived. Each set looks like it was pulled from a basement game in 1983 and never stopped rolling — scuffed, faded, worn smooth by decades of desperate saving throws and doomed characters. These aren't pristine collector's pieces. They're veterans. Every scratch is a TPK. Every worn edge is a character who didn't make it. Each set of battle-worn dice is guaranteed to deliver a natural 20 right when you need it most. (Natural 20 not actually guaranteed. Void where prohibited by the dice gods.)
Deathbringer Pin Set
Ten hard enamel pins, each roughly 1½ inches of pure Shattered Empire attitude. The set features all eight classes — Battle Nun, Bounty Hunter, Deathbringer, Doomscribe, Fighter, Plague Doctor, Thief, and Witch Hunter — plus the Deathbringer logo and a special black-and-white old-school Deathbringer, honoring where the blood first spilled.

Pin your class to your jacket, your dice bag, your GM screen, or the still-warm cloak of a fallen comrade. Collect all ten, or pledge your loyalty to a single class and let the rest of the table know exactly who's dying gloriously tonight.
Signed Limited-Edition Deathbringer Denim Jacket

The rules are clear: hoarding does not befit a hero. Jackets are another matter entirely. Claim the limited-edition Deathbringer denim jacket in black (the color of the abyss) or blue (the color of the abyss on a bright day). This jacket is signed by the Professor DM himself and comes with a full set of Deathbringer patches, including a massive 11-inch embroidered back patch. Provides +0 AC. Provides +10 to looking like you've survived two deaths already.

Everyone who backs is automatically eligible for the stretch goals for their tier!

They're joined by Luke Stratton, creator of Pirate Borg; Daniel Fox, creator of ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG; and Ben Milton of Questing Beast, creator of Knave and Maze Rats. The roster runs deep with some of the best-known voices in the TTRPG community, including Baron DeRopp (Dungeon Masterpiece), Luke Hart (The DM Lair), Discourse Minis (Dungeons & Discourse), David McFarland (DM Scotty), William Tanner Schroeder (Paladin Prose), Grace "World Destroyer" Mason (the title is earned), and Bob World Builder — with more to come!
