Chapter Draft: Zoning Your Speakeasy!
It's been an incredible first week for the Criminal Spirits campaign. We're already at 63% of the funding target and growing every day. In the spirit of Labor Day, I want to share with all of you a preview of what I've been working on writing-wise these last few weeks. The full text of this section as well as several other draft chapters are already available on my Patreon, The Game Map | Exploring Games and Game Creation | Patreon
Zoning Out the Speakeasy
No other location in the game will have more scenes happen in it than your speakeasy and it should be laid out clearly for play.
This setup uses the concepts of Zones and Barriers, which you can learn more about in the chapter Time and Space. All you need to know for laying out the speakeasy is that Zones define locations that characters can move between, as long as they are touching. Barriers are obstacles that make it difficult to move between Zones.
The first three Zones have already been created when you wrote down the High Concept, Front, and Neighborhood for the speakeasy.
Write down your high concept, write the Front below that, and the Neighborhood below the Front.
Now you need to add one more Zone, a secret entrance. This could be another business, a side alley, a hidden door, or any other place or method that allows characters to slip in and out unnoticed for smuggling moonshine or just sneaking around. Write it down and put it above the High Concept.
The Secret Entrance most likely also leads into the neighborhood, but may go somewhere else (such as the Hudson River for a secret dock). If it does, add that new area as a Zone as well.

Meet Your Character Sheet
You'll be spending a lot of time with it, and I know you'll like them. I certainly love them. Download the Criminal Spirits character sheets here for free.
When making Criminal Spirits, I knew I wanted to have a fun, fancy sheet that would get everyone into the Spirit of the game. Levi Nola, the incredible artist for Criminal Spirits, delivered in spades, and so did the feedback of the many Reddit communities who reviewed the first draft. The result is the amazing color sheet you see above, the perfect expression of the busy bootlegger.
Bbright colors and fine details are not appropriate for every occasion, though. For those who prefer a simple black suit or dress, Levi has also provided us with a more straight-laced character sheet. Black and white and easy to print or read for when you just want to buckle down, reach for a bottle on the shelf and get some work done.
