Project Update: Backstories, organizations, and playing the game before... playing the game. (Distal)

I'm one of those people who love creating characters that I'll (probably) never get to play. There's something about the raw potential of an unexplored character that is just really fun to think about. It's a good way to play a game... without actually playing the game...

Games should make you excited to play them before you even swing a sword. So here are a couple of ways we try to do that in Distal.

Backstories

Backstories (backgrounds) are a big part of Distal's character creation, so we made building them as fun and relevant as the rest of the character creation process. They provide you with mechanical benefits and narrative hooks that you and the GM can grab hold of and build on.

Organizations

During your Session Zero, we put your real-life party of players through a team-building exercise to establish an organization. An organization is built with prompts, similar to a background, except that you choose, as a team, which prompts are most appealing to you. It helps set the tone for the kind of campaign you'd like to run, as well as the role and reputation your characters take on in the world.

Have you created a character from the free alpha material yet?

If so, what was their two-sentence backstory, and how did you interpret it?

Post it in the comments section!
